Chris Dortch analysis on Zo on 104.5

This. I've been saying the same for quite some time. His teams are forced to win games with abnormal offensive outputs to mask the inability to consistently defend. It's how we beat teams like UVA, @LSU, & @Bama, while also staying competitive with @UK and Florida (we shoot the lights out), and lose to teams like NCSU, @Vandy, & aTm (we can't throw it in the ocean). Particularly bad, is our perimeter defense. In those three losses, we allowed our opponents to shoot a combined 17-32 (53%) from the 3-point line.

Yea, but defense isn't an issue.

The performance against Virginia is exhibit #1 regarding the frustrating thing about this team: The real potential they possess far exceeds the performance on the court.

Wins like that one and the LSU and Bama road wins get counterbalanced by losses like the first loss at Xavier, UTEP, NC State and conference losses to aTm (home) and Vandy. A team with the talent we possess has no business losing to these teams.

Chris Dortch and his opinions on the subject of basketball are worthy of respect.

I basically said the same in another thread. To me the frustration is more about inconsistency than focusing on what a horrible disgrace of a coach the guy is. To me to beat some good teams the way we have this year means he's doing something right, but the examples you list mean he's doing something awfully wrong too. Consistency would be nice.

CCM isn't a horrible disgrace of a coach. He's just middling. He might have a really good season one out of every 5 years and really bad season one out of every five years and the other three will be what we've seen the last three.

Next year could be his really bad season.

The question is, do you want to hang on to middling because you might take some heat from his friends, he's a nice guy and he's respected. Those seem to be the main reasons advanced for retaining him right now.

Question...would Hart be happy and retain a coach that says makes the NCAAT 3/5 years and NIT the other 2?

I would like better results, but are those results ok with our AD? I truly wonder.

I would say, yes, but I don't think you get NCAA 3/5 with CCM. I think you get it 2/5, tops, with NIT 2 and a sub .500 once.

Seems to me like it's pretty much a guarantee to never make the tournament under Cuonzo. Don't know where this 2/5 or 3/5 talk is coming from.

I don't think next year team finishes under .500, I feel there's quite the overreaction about next year IMO.

With that said, do you think Hart is good with 2/5 NCAAT and 3 NITs?

Pretty much a guarantee? They're currently projected in by just about every person of a 72 person panel.

With that said, if they make it this year what does your opinion change to?

I'd say Hart and the admin would like to be happy with 2/5 (sad as that is), but I don't know if the fans and boosters would let them. And that 2/5 is my guess of best case. I thinj he'd be like latter devoe and go through 4 year stretches without making it. As for next year, CCM is 14-9, 6-5 with a way more talented team this year. .500 or below wouldn't shock me. Post play will fall off considerably. Next year's team would have a better chance as a "40 minutes of hell" squad, but CCM wont go there.

Your assuming Hubbs and the freshman are ready to lead? That's a big assumption.

That's right now. You know there's a couple of more losses headed out way.

And he had less talent the first 2 years but wins/losses will be similar, so he's proved talent alone doesn't necessarily dictate wins.

I haven't looked at OOC slate next year, I'm sure very few games have been released, but I think 16-17 wins is very possible.

Where's the scoring coming from next year? Hubbs needs to turn the corner, or it could be ugly.

Hubbs progressing would be nice, but I don't think he has to be a 20ppg guy.

I think you'll see much more balanced scoring on next hears squad, I also think Richardson will be a 14-15ppg guy.

Rick Stansbury was fired for almost the exact same scenario you present, maybe even better results. I'd hate to think that our AD would settle for the same or worse results as Miss State, considering the results we've experienced under Mears, Green and Pearl.

Rob Lewis just said on the radio that in his opinion that if CCM does not make it to the tourney then it will be an easy decison for Hart to not retain him.

That's a big change from him, and gives some hope.

He had been adamant that Martin wasn't on the hot seat entering the season and barring a disaster of a season, like .500 or worse, that Martin would return.

Sorry, but that's how your post read to me. No hard feelings bro

How? The post wasn't even specifically about the UVA game. It was about all of the games we have played well in and looked like a completely different team.

I said we should look that way consistently, which we should because we obviously have the talent and ability to do so. We've shown flashes of it. That doesn't mean we should beat everyone by 35, you pulled that one out of nowhere.
