This is good for depth and competition. Not sure why he would come here though as the RB room is crowded with no clear path to start versus where he is at today.

I’ll eat my hat if he’s 5’11”. I like the kid. He runs hard, but he just isn’t that talented. He’s a third string back who’s starting for no other reason than we lack talent at that position.

Lol

Why would that hurt my feelings? You’re entitled to your opinion. I hope those players get better, but I know, having watched 40+ years of UT football, that great running backs almost always flash brilliance early. Not that those guys can’t improve, but I seriously doubt the next Travis Stephens (much less Jamal Lewis) is in the current backfield.

The ironic thing about this is Travis Stephens was clearly his best as a senior after taking a redshirt in his 3rd year. He ran some his sophomore and junior years but don’t recall he flashed brilliance. He was a whole different RB his senior year.

Sophmore yr, UGA game, week after Lewis went down against Auburn...Stephens went over 100 and led the way to a massive win. Henry took over after that game; but, on that day, Stephens had a great one.

I remember that and thought he was going to emerge afterwards. But (as you stated) he played second fiddle to Henry and ended up with 477 yards in his second season…Wright had 409 in his first as the third option, including a 112 yard effort.

I think that just cracked the code. Wright=Travis Stephens!

Nothing ironic. That’s exactly why I referenced him. He was the exception to the rule.

that’s not saying much
I think UT has an exceptionally talented Oline. Carvin and Wright will be playing in the NFL. Wright is projecting as a high pick. They return solid experience. Got to figure who will start opposite Wright, but there are options. Way better than what that kid has ever run behind.

i would maybe say we are above average. how many SEC lines have commensurate, or, even more talent - and this key - depth?

Which we are building but do not have yet.

Tony Thompson would be another one….Jay Graham only averaged 4.5 ypc for 209 yds his sophomore season…. John Kelly only averaged 4.1 ypc his last year here….. you are being way too dismissive of the running backs that we have on campus now.

I was a freshman that year and don’t exactly recall that (probably because it was 1 of 2 games I missed in person). But…he still took a redshirt in 1999 and was second to Henry in 2000. So, I still think my point remains- he was a different RB his senior year.
