Coach Z

Ummm. Did you just say that the WR coach isn't responsible for WR's catching the ball? I beg to differ. That's one of his primary responsibilities.

The worst part of that is that the players continued to drop players all year long. Very little improvement. There was marginal improvement in route running but not nearly enough. Out of all the O coaches. Z did the least impressive job.

How many 4 and 5 star wr's do you think get recruited, but can't catch the damn football?
Only you would blame every wr drop in a football game on the position coach.

I think Jones said in a presser that over the course of their careers, the seniors saw 44 different position and strength coaches on staff. I'm pretty sure I remember that right, but even if it isn't that high it is a crazy number. Would love for one season to go by with no change.

Would probably help out the players and the coaches a lot if there isn't any turnover. Having that many coaches has to get in a players head, and with so many coaches with different teaching philosophies has to be confusing for a player. Might explain some drops. Well that and youth.

Can Josh Malone catch the football right now or is Z going to start with football catching 101 like he's 9 yrs old.
If you wear him out, argue that they were too mechanical. That would be valid. Wr starts worrying about his hands more than catching the ball and the dropsies are home. If you want to call that poor coaching, that's fine. A little overcoaching maybe, but players have to use those as the base, then go out and play. If you are thinking about the wrong thing with the ball in the air, or thinking at all, its on the player.

Fair enough. I saw all the factors you saw and will acknowledge them. I just didn't see WRs being developed as a whole. You did. No worries.

I think a couple of the WRs progress very well. The problem I saw was QBs who could not get the ball to them in a position where they could advance the ball. Just wait until the incoming WRs hit the field in the Fall. With the experience the young WRs got last year, the new guys playing and Ferguson throwing the ball, we will score a lot of points in 2014.

Only you would ignore the lack of improvement and blame players when the problem wasn't isolated to one player.

Kenny Britt, Kenny Britt!!! IT'S HIS HEAD, not his hands, and not his coach!!!!!

If you think learning to catch the ball on a whole different level isn't a big part of moving from HS to CFB then you aren't nearly as smart as you think you are.

The velocity is different. The coverage is different. The speed of the game is different. Yes. The incoming WR's will have "Football Catching 101" from now til August. They'll catch hundreds of thrown balls.. play 7 on 7 until they can't walk.... and catch hundreds more balls from a jugs gun.

The coaching they get during that time is ABSOLUTELY critical to their development as pass catchers.

I'm talking about catching the football. You blame it on the coach. I blame it on the player. Guess who the good players blame. Guess who the losers blame. Someone else who never touches the ball. You must think every wr coach in football history sucks because wr's drop passes. All of them. Great argument. I guess Malone can't catch at all. Sure hope Z can show him how.

AJ Green just a few weeks back went thru a 2 game stretch with multiple drops. Dropped 3 straight one game and pulled himself out. He knows whose fault it is. Some Bengal fan is out there blaming it on the wr coach.

Blah, blah. Can Malone catch the football or not. While at this all star game, can he catch it, or not?
And yes, thanks for letting me know that wr's work on footwork, hands, etc. Had no idea. What you don't seem to understand is you generally don't get a 4 or 5 star rating if you have trouble catching the football.

Gets really hard to know who's opinion to value sometimes.

But I'm still grateful for the conversations on Volnation. Especially the ones who are able to passionately discuss without name calling.

Does him interest in the job really surprise anyone? Isnt UT his 4th job in 5 years or something crazy like that?

Although childish name calling can be fun when the other party gets really pissed off at a message board diss.

Reasonable. Here's hoping you're right. I'm excited to see what Pearson, Malone and Helm will add to the passing game and how much North progresses next season.

If one guy can't catch. Blame the guy. If every WR on the team drops passes then its the coach.

Yes. WR's drop passes.... but not in the volumes we witnessed this year. If the WR coach is not responsible for players learning to catch... then why pay him a salary? Any GA can organize drills.

And from your last statement... you would have us to believe that UT did a grand job of finding all the 4* WR's who had trouble catching the ball.

Why are you so willing to throw the players under the bus in an effort to put no blame at all on the coach?

Yes. The players ultimately have to put in the work and make the play. But again, when a unit underperforms then it isn't likely just the players.

You got to remember that North played rb in hs and was learning to play wr on the fly. Coach Z said it his self when Hooker asked him about Smith's drops he said Smith was forced to play to early because they were so thin at wr and on any other team he would have started out on the practice squad. Most of things I have heard from the talking heads on the radio that are around the team say that coach Z is one of the best coaches on the staff.

This.

I would love to see what Volnation thinks are the job responsibilities of an assistant coach at this level. Let's see...talk to the press about how bad your players are, show up to the public meet & greet events and recruit...that about cover it? Of course, if recruiting starts slipping, I'm sure that won't be part of their responsibilities either. Pretty sweet job.

IMO wide receiver play at the end of the season was much better than at the beginning. Not as many wrong routes or drops. Croom and north were most obvious ones, but pig and young looked better too.

A lot was asked of these kids. They had to step in and perform fresh on the memory of hunter, cp, rogers, and Rivera. I think coach z is doing well. The portions of him coaching on the mic'd up productions it did last spring and summer show that he knows the details of the position. I'll give him another season or two before I pass judgement.

The bigger issue is finding personnel to set the edge on defense. That was our biggest problem last year. Just ask Oregon, Mizzou, or auburn.
