I sort of feel that way too....perhaps not as strongly as you.

He'd certainly not be at the top of my list but we could do worse...

Anyone who wins and can beat Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Vandy, Kentucky and the occasional out of conference ranked team is on my list. Others need not apply.

1. Strong- won conference championship in 3rd year and very good recruiter
2. Franklin- only coached 2 yrs. But vandy had improved greatly- very good recruiter
3. Fisher- average coach little better than average recruiter.
4. Gundy- good coach but below average recruiter. Team never in top 15 in recruiting
5. Fedora- unproven as coach and recruiter
6. Mullen has not proven anything
The UT job is all about recruiting so I favor Strong or Franklin

Patterson
Petersen (never happen)
Fedora
Shaw
Fisher

Petersen would never happen? Has anyone asked him? I for one cannot imagine Boise State paying him what Tennessee COULD pay him. I can't imagine Boise State having the facilities Tennessee has. He has taken a school along the lines of Troy, Akron, or Wyoming, and turned them into a recognizable brand in the 5 or 6 years he has been running that program. He is a great motivator, an awesome X's and O's coach, and has, as far as I know, the character we need. IMO, Chris Petersen is the one bonafide home run hire out there. Sure, he might say no, but he is worth a plane ride.

So so on...

Agreed. At least make him turn down 6 million a year. If he does, then fine, I'll say that Hart did his job and I'll feel confident that he really wants a winner. But if he doesn't even make a push for him and hires some retread or unproven coach instead, then he's telling me that he's just incompetent or doesn't really want UT to compete at the top of SEC again.

I just have a feeling he'd bolt as soon as Oregon opens up which could be this offseason if Kelly leaves for the NFL.

But with the money we are discussing this time around the other jobs won't have the same allure and especially if the coach we hire is successful here in the SEC.

Outside of Gruden, and including coaches that have probably already turned us down and pipedreams:

2) David Shaw
3) Gary Patterson
4) Mike Gundy
5) Chris Peterson
6) Charlie Strong
7) Jimbo Fisher
8) Butch Davis
9) Kirby Smart
10) Al Golden

I wouldnt mind 2-5 but I thinking those are long shots.. Strong is risky in my opinion but then any of these could be. Fisher isnt the best hire but I believe he is a little more likely than some of the others and a little less risky than strong. I am just unsure of davis and hope we dont have to get smart or golden

I'll be honest - the coaches I could support unreservedly are Gruden and Fulmer.

I think Strong and Patterson could win me over.

Just about everyone of the legitimate candidates is risky.
