Top wide receiver Eldridge Massington, who decommitted from USC Tuesday, says Tennessee is one of a handful of teams he's currently considering.

I'm sure the Butch Jones hire will seal the deal for him.

If indeed Butch Jones is named coach at 2:30 today. I will support him but I am dissappointed because we are UT the other SEC schools get who they want regardless of how many times they are told no. I feel like this is another hire that was just settled for. But i am VFL

Could part of the problem have been all the stipulations Hart said in his press conference hurt him? He felt like he couldn't go back on not getting a head coach, or someone with integrity. (Petrino) So he had to fill his criteria so he didn't back track.

Well, maybe. But, UNC and Fedora have the 17th ranked recruiting class in the country.

Tennessee has the 28th ranked class.

Cincinnati comes in at (wait for it) 54th.

Boom.

Here's the problem. I didn't want Fedora, or Davis, or Strong. I don't want to just compete against Vandy, UK, and UNC in football, I want us to own them. I wanted a coach who would recruit, compete, and win against LSU, Alabama, and UGA.

I would argue with you, but I think you are right; and that's why this hire has me bummed. I do think Jones will win more here than Dooley did though. I just don't think we will compete for the SECC's. It will be hard for me to be disappointed next season, because I don't expect much.

Jones endeared himself to his players by running exciting, high-tempo practices throughout the year. The Bearcats ran plays in practice at such a high pace that Jones required the players to sprint back to the line on nearly every repetition, S Drew Frey said. The quick tempo helped the Bearcats' players become supremely conditioned for tight games in the fourth quarter.

An outsiders opinion FWIW -- Tennessee fans you might see this as a sad day. I understand you didn't get the coach you wanted. Here's what I know about Butch Jones. In all my years of covering recruiting for Scout, Rivals & ESPN there are a few coaches who really make an impression on you. Butch Jones was one of those coaches for me. I remember visiting some coaches in Tampa Bay when Butch was doing some things for the Bucs. They raved about his attention to detail and his knowledge of the game. My relationship continued with Coach Jones when he was at WVU and recruited Chicago. Excellent recruiter and very well received in the living rooms. Successful at Central Michigan, successful at Cincinnati where Ohio State is king. Saw him speak last year at the Ohio High School Football Coaches Clinic and he was outstanding. He'll surround himself with some great coaches like Steve Stripling, Don Mahoney and Mike Bajakian. Again, I realize he wasn't choice #1 but you could've done a lot worse.
