Conference expansion

Conference expansion is simply ridiculous. 12 teams is probably the sweet spot and anything more undermines the conference.
this was always going to get worse with the playoffs. even with automatic qualifiers three of the conferences might have gotten 4 in total if they were lucky, with the SEC and Big 10 fighting over 5/3 or 4/4.

at least with the BCS everyone wasn't happy, and there wasn't much point in jumping around, because the results were going to be the same regardless. Now with 12 teams in it, it very much matters where you are.

Go back to AP and UPI/Coaches Poll.........screw the BCS and CFP.

Split NC's were fine......It made NCAA football unique. jmo

I was too young to really know that time. I pretty much only knew the BCS. I didn't mind the computer element. way too much subjectivity in humans, and we see it with the playoffs.

I think this is what we get

SEC adds: Miami, Florida State, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Virginia, Virginia Tech, NC State, North Carolina

Big Ten adds: Pitt, Syracuse, Boston College, Notre Dame, Cal, Stanford, Oregon, Washington

Big 12 adds: Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, Washington State, Oregon State…Wake Forest, Louisville, Duke…USF, Memphis, SMU

Memphis is a long shot for the Big 12.

The ACC’s leftovers are more likely to end up as American Conference members (or in an ACC that is essentially a shell filled with American Conference) members than they are to end up in a conference with Oregon State and Washington State.

(Honestly, Louisville will probably end up a new Big 12 member. Georgia Tech should be fine also; they’ll always have some level of appeal to the Big Ten.)
Big 12 cannot expand past 16 and pay the same amount. Yormark only has room with current media rights deal for 16 teams.

This maybe the point where with the turmoil of media companies/streaming where the wise decision is not to add teams. In true reality in the next few years it is not about the size of the market footprint as broadcast TV goes away but becomes about the number of weekly eyeballs. The SEC rivalries may make for the most eyeballs as they are IE…the biggest payout. More teams equals more weak games not more interesting games.

BIG XII will soon add Gonzaga and UConn as basketball only members to, technically, expand the league to 18.

The "next step" of this trend toward super-conferences and ridiculous TV money is ugly and we're to blame.

We all wanted it. More games on TV. More competitive teams recruiting with top notch facilities. Recruiting using private jets and flash to woo elite players. We wanted this. We wanted to create this brand that is The Vols and we wanted it to be known nationwide and seen nationwide.

Well, now we've got it. A billion dollar "amateur" business.

Big businesses consolidate because of "economies of scale" and other fancier economic reasons that all add up to more money made by the business.

We wanted this. "As a man sews, so shall he reap."

Of course. How long did you think big business could happen off the backs of 18 year olds? Pay them in education? Lol. We weren't paying Fulmer in education. About time. Capitalism. Love it or hate it.

Definitely love capitalism but love college football too.

It's a matter of time until a lawsuit gets through the courts which declares players are employees. At that point schools will have to decide if they want to own pro football and basketball franchises.

With luck, non revenue sports will survive. Maybe. Even if the non revenue sports escape being seen legally as pro sports, will the schools still have revenue to support them if they shutter the football and basketball programs.

It's a shame, but I'm as responsible as the next guy. I wanted UT to be on TV as much as possible, recruit nationally, have great facilities to recruit and play, and everything else that usually goes with pro sports. I'll own it.

You are right. It is not about education any more. If I were the institutions I would divorce athletics and put them out as farm systems. The liability in the future will hinder the education focus. Wait until the non-NFL athletes start suing for CTE. These numbers are multiple times the 5 percent that go to the NFL. The schools are going to be responsible for Workers’ Comp and long term disabilities which will be numerous due to the nature of the sports. It is going to happen.

Purely from a TV money standpoint, how much does adding an additional FL, SC, or GA team actually bring to the table? Miami is hte only one of those schools that kind of brings a major TV market. And people there don't care about NCAA sports.

Perhaps adding NC or VA would be worth it in enlarging the conference footprint into populous states.

Break up the conferences. Put the power schools into four divisions regardless of past conference. Have an east, west, north and south. When the season is over have an 8 team playoff. But balance the leagues as much as possible. Im just over all this expansion crap.

I can’t believe the PAC screwed this up so bad.

Call the Big 12 after Texas/OU leave, drop WVU and Okie State to the SEC and add BYU/Houston. 20 team super league and billion dollar rights deal. Enough in place regionally to make sense (everybody west of the Mississippi). Instead, you’re going to have to disband within the next 12 months. Utter lunacy how they messed this up.
Well, they have that alliance with the Big 10 and ACC to keep the SEC under control.

FSU and Clemson each have an average of 2 million viewers per game in the fall. That puts them in the top half of the SEC schools for viewers.

Does it really matter where those viewers are?

Viewers matter, but subscribers matter more. The SECN is already in the panhandle and SC.
Can't personally speak to where the SEC Network is available throughout the country, but I get the Longhorn, Big 10 and Pac 10 networks in North Carolina. Seems like the conference networks are pretty much nationwide.
