Confidence level in the 2016 recruiting class? (merged)

Losing HJ is a big loss but this staff has already Signed Dormady and S. Jones. 2016 JG is also in the fold. QB looks stacked.

prognosticating, based on past trends. Say Dormady bolts (which he wont) and Sheriron bolts. then, all of a sudden. Weve got a problem Houston.

Thats why the Hunter swapping to another school makes no sense. And to Clemson?? Aaahaa. Go to Georgia, or, Oklahoma. Note Dame. Clemson?? Makes 0 sense.

you sign a top qb in every class if they want to come. if they make a boneheaded decision, like switching to Clemson. Then, best of luck. i just cant believe its Clemson.

Next year theyll do exactly what Clemson does. Fall flat.

Last season a lot of people said we would be down in recruiting this year due to the massive classes we signed the last two years. It was expected, and now that its here everyone wants to bi#@% and complain about it... We will be just fine...probably somewhere between 15th and 20th this year, a lot smaller class then next year we will be swinging for the fences again..

USC takes smaller classes, due to obvious Kiff-easons. And are usually top 10.

So, i dont buy into that. In the Doug Matthews interview i read 'smaller class gives us ability to pick and choose who we want, even if lower rated guys'. How is that? it should be the complete reverse.

We have absolute needs in secondary, WR; and OL. pretty simple.

Two of those skill positions should elicit interest from really highly rated guys...since theyre easier to evaluate at that age. Butch is a good recruiter, but hes got his work cut out. Were too late to the battle for the OSU/Ok/Al/Ga battles.

Gonna really have to pound the pavement to close well.

Oh really? So here's the facts on USC: Used ESPN as it was handy to get to....

I don't think he's a big loss and him a Pro-style Qb and us running a zone read. Mentioned this in the recruiting forum.

I wouldn't be surprised if he flips again because Clemson basically runs the same offense as us and I don't see him being a good fit there either. He's wanting to go to a school and not have to fight it out with other QBs.

Confidence level - declining

Meh one or two kids can easily boost a class ranking several spots. We're still either leading or really high on the list for Dickerson, Warrior, Brown, etc. A few kids like those commit and people shouldn't worry.

Question to VN:
If you were a top-rated PRO STYLE QB, why would you want to even consider UT?
Our offense is completely based upon the ability of a DUAL THREAT QB. I don't blame the kid at all. Not sure if Clemson is where I would choose though. He should head to USCw.

Johnson know's he is not good enough to play in our system i seen him play twice and he had 2 terrible game when all is said and done he is not as good as JG or Dormady and he doesn't won't to compete against the elite i guess he is one of them that's won't the job handed to him.

I'm not shocked that the QB flipped. Guarantano is being touted as the future QB of Tennessee 100% and players with talent don't want to have to wait in line too long. And if Guarantano red shirts a year (like someone had mentioned he's okay with) that pushes the other QB off even more.

You are correct!
Shafer came to U.T. in the same classs as Ainge and one of them had to go.
Stewart came to U.T. in the same class as Manning and one of them had to go.

show me rivals or 247. ESPN ratings are the Dodge minivan of ratings.

At this point its not really about rankings its about momentum and how other recruits perceive the program. You would hope that at this point the coaches have built a strong enough relationship that a week like we just saw wouldnt hurt but you never know with kids these days.

We really need a big commit soon to at least calm the boards and any negative recruiting thats being used right now.

A lot of this comes down to Butch's recruiting strategy. His main selling points have been 1. Legacies
2. In-state talent / owning the state
3. Early playing time
4. High ranking class due to size
5. Top facilities

This year it seems there is a lack of top in state talent. Legacies aren't knocking down our doors. There is almost no early playing time this year or next, it will be a small class so no rush in joining a top 5 recruiting class, facilities still good.

Butch will have to adjust his recruiting to what Saban is doing. Sell the kids on the idea that coming to UT means you'll be competing for championships and UT is a pipeline to the NFL. Having a year or 2 with no draft picks is brutal. Also running an offense that doesn't translate to the NFL hurts too

I have never been a Clemson fan but to say they will fall flat is just dumb. They are in the playoff and could play for the title.

I hope we continue to pick up steam in this department.
I sure hated to see one 1st team AP All American and one 2nd team AP All American all hail from our great state of Tennessee and not be Vols.

disagree. its the ACC.

FSU is down. Notre Dame was a good win. (1) and North Carolina was on the verge of winning.

We'll see. i have 0 respect for YaboDabo.

there's some good insight here. i think this year, singularly, most of it applies. i don't think it will necessarily translate in to future classes, depending on a few things happening....more Vols in the draft this year....really contending for a championship next year, ending another streak or two against FL and/or Bama...

if's and but's, sure...but i think if the draft part happens this year, and the winning takes another step or two next year, we get closer to being a program that can 'reload' each year....and the narrative changes....

and there's still plenty of playing time up for grabs in '16...maybe not starting, but we need depth at several spots.....

anyway, it's been a known since the end of last year, that the '16 class wouldn't be the rainmaker the 1st 2 classes were, simply from a numbers standpoint. so i'm not overly concerned at this point.

20.6 avg players signed per season
9.6 avg class ranking.
Really, indeed.

Just because you have a big class doesn't mean you get ranked high.

Just because you have a big class doesn't mean you get ranked high.

i doesn't hurt......and gives you some room for error.

signing 16...you have no room for error. you need all of them to work out.

sign 33, and you can a) take some chances, and b) withstand some attrition.

I don't care if a lot more of this class blows up as long as they end up signing a lot of quality linemen on both sides of the ball and secondary players.......

THIS CLASS IS MORE ABOUT FILLING DESPERATE NEEDS AND NOT THE "SEXY" PLAYER. TENNESSEE HAS THE ATHLETES, NOW IT NEEDS TO STOCK PILE BIG UGLIES....
