Crucify me, but. . .

Leading a band in victory is different than Gator chomping in the defense's faces after you run the ball 4 yards for a first down. Tim Tebow's college career is full of hypocrisy but, in his defense, little of it has to do with his choosing. Tebow is just living his life and can't help it if the national media overhypes him as a player and a person. He is a good role model and a quality guy but the moral standard that they claim for him is ridiculous.

I do not like his touchdown celebrations. I like the "act like you have been there before and expect to be there again" school of thought. However, I can see how his enthusiasm excites and elevates his team.

I also feel that if someone slaps you in the mouth, you punch them harder. OK talked smack during the week and during the game. There was an exchange going on with the the defender and Tebow shut him up with a chomp. Good for him.

Tebow started the smack talk when he expressed how much he was looking forward to playing a Big 12 defense.

No, but I do like Manning and think he is a classy guy. I would have no problem with Tebow leading his band in victory. My issues with Tebow are because of the media portraying him as a Saint when there are numerous other college players who do as much or more off the field as he does and get no credit from the national media for it. It's surprising that you are not more critical of the ridiculous amount of attention he is given but you always try to cast Manning and other UT players in such a negative light. Your "Oscar the Grouch" routine is laughable and inconsistent lately.
Being a Heisman Trophy winner and having two National Championships warrants attention. Passing for a bunch of meaningless yards against the Kentuckys of the world while losing to your biggest competition every time you play them doesn't. It's called accomplishment.

Oh, and the comment Tebow supposedly made on last month's awards circuit — about looking forward to facing a Big 12 defense — that put some Sooners in a bad mood to begin with?

"I didn't say it like that," he said Monday. "I dream of playing teams like Texas, Oklahoma, but also Penn State, USC. So when I was talking about it, I was talking about it in a way like that, not that we're superior to them."

:eek:lol: I'm sure that NFL scouts who were salivating over Manning didn't think they were meaningless. Manning is a player that you build a franchise around and Tebow will be lucky to be picked higher than the 3rd round and will be even luckier to ever play a down in the NFL at QB. Tebow's accomplishments in college are impressive but Manning will go down as one of the greatest football players of all time on any level and will be a surefire NFL HOF. Tebow will just be another example of how college success often doesn't translate to the pros. Face it, your poster-boy will get posterized in the NFL. I'm still having trouble understanding how the Manning hype bothered you but the Teblowfest doesn't. I'm guessing you don't feel that it's hypocritical due to the fact that you're a UT fan.....

It's Tebow's responsibility to make sure that his words don't come out in a way that can be turned into chalkboard material. It's not the OU players responsibility to try to decipher whether or not Tebow is insulting them. OU was no less classy last night than UF.

If it was smack talk then it was a pretty lame attempt at it. "I am looking forward to playing a Big 12 defense" - Oh my, that is brutal. I hope none of our players come out and say, "I am looking forward to playing UCLA"; they will have it pasted inside every locker.

It wasn't like he said, "I and looking forward to playing a Big 12 defense because they are weaker that what I face in the SEC". OK, like you, tried to make a mountain out of a molehill.

Agree. I didn't have an issue with Tebow celebrating (including the chomp) with his teammates, or on his sideline, or with Florida fans, even in an away stadium. If Tebow had led the Gator band in their song after the game last night, so what?

When you get in the face of the opponent, it changes. Tebow was flagged for unsportsmanslike conduct last evening for something he does routinely. That is the "chomp" directed toward an opponent after a favorable play. Couple this with his crying (there's been threads on this on this board) when he loses and you have the classic poor sport, or poor loser/winner. Examples of poor sportsmanship are winners "rubbing salt in the wounds" of the losers, or the losers expressing frustration at not winning..

That said, I think he is a phenomenal athlete and football player. I also believe his off the field work is commendable.

That's what they are supposed to do! It's motivational material. I'm not saying that Tebow's comments were brutal. I'm saying that he made a comment about looking forward to playing a defense that the media had talked down about the entire year. Not just OU's defense but the entire conference's defenses. He should know that his words could be taken that way. OU should have been smarter in their comments back and taken the high road but they were no less classy than UF and St. Tebow.

Is an SEC title not an accomplishment?

Tebow won't be the pro that Manning is, but he has had a much better college career. Also, he will get his chance at QB, although I don't expect him to be a star.

I couldn't have said it better. To be clear, I don't even have much of a problem with him doing the chomp. My problem is with the perception that Tebow has a higher moral standard than most players when he doesn't. Just because other guys aren't as vocal about their faith or have as much of a platform to spout off about it doesn't mean that they should be respected any less than Tebow. We don't even know the motivation behind what Tebow does. If a politician went to Thailand or the Phillippines to do missionary work then we would all be cynical and say they were doing it for good PR. However, when Tebow does it he is the Saint of college athletics and is only doing it "from the goodness of his heart because he's a better human being than the rest of us." Please. I'm sure Tebow has good intentions but it's also possible that his intentions are based on selfishness and a desire for publicity. This is most likely not the case but people are extremely quick to assume only the best about Tebow while assuming the worst about other athletes and members of society. If I remember correctly, the measure of an athlete/coach is not based on the charitable works he does. If that were the case then Fulmer would be praised as a Saint and never have been fired from UT. Hat, you of all people should understand this. Praise the football player for accomplishments on the field and praise the man for the works he does. Don't put a football player on a pedestal because he is more vocal about things that almost every other professional player does and that a lot of college athletes do. Tebow is not unique in his charitable works but the media sure tries to make it out like he is.

It is, but Tebow has two of those.

edit: But to be fair, he wasn't as big a role in the first, although I do think they drop another game without him that year.

I'll go on record saying that i like Tebow, but it is much easier to lower your head than complete a deep-out.

Tebow's accomplishments in college are more impressive. I don't dispute that but I also wasn't the one to bring Manning into the comparison by trashing his accomplishments(which over the course of a career will dwarf Tebow's accomplishments).

Some of you Ainge appologists and nut huggers were saying that Erik Ainge was a lock for the 3rd round (or sooner) and Tebow is 10X's the QB that guy was. If Ainge can be a projected 3rd rounder, there is no way a reasonable person can't say that a guy of Tebow's talent and character can't be better than that. Al of this talk about Tebow being a FB or TE or MLB in the NFL will be rendered to whispers by a few nutjobs. Heck, There is no way that if you get a guy like Tebow couldn't do just as well as Roethlisburger or Delhomme or anybody in the NFC North...

I don't agree that a player has to win multiple titles to deserve praise or be considered accomplished.

Yeah, cause you see so many glorified fullbacks playing QB these days.

Furthermore, Tommy Frazier was one of the best college QBs of the '90s. Under what you're saying Rasputin, he should have had a better pro career than someone like Drew Brees.
