I do know Stevens was called and offered 3+ million and turned it down, I also know Shaka wouldn't even let us give a dollar amount he shot us down so quick.

It's ok though, keep expecting us to hire guys like we are Kentucky, glad to see you're in touch with reality.

Honest question...what hire has Tennessee basketball ever made that made the CBB world go WOW, what a great hire?

Pearl turned out to be a great hire, but that definitely wasn't the vibe when he was hired...Hamilton hired a D2 and mid major coach and got lucky.

So why now are you all of a sudden expecting Tennessee to go and hire a top 10 coach?

I am so fu(&ing tired of UT fans acting like we are a second rate program! We are UT! We should expect nothing less than excellence!

I do not believe you are correct. I believe that Stevens told UT he would not discuss the UT job until his team had finished the AA tourney. And Ham Bone panicked.

If we treat our own coaches like sh** after a season and a half, how the Hell do you expect excellence from "proven" coaches? Honestly. Take off the orange glasses for a moment and tell my what positives could come from being here if you already have a name.

That's what the administration tells us we are. Look at the the state of the athletic department. Look at the AD and the hires we've been making. Winning isn't a priority here.

And if we pay a guy, what, $5 million and after his first year and only wins 17 games, no NCAA tourney, you'll be complaining about what a failure he is and that he isn't worthy of being here and demand he be fired. What coach would run that risk that early in his tenure? None.

Somewhat true but hopes were high that we finally had a coach who was up and coming and had a personality. He killed that and apathy was pretty high by year 3. Turned out he was a huge dud.

What would be the risk? A solid contract with an exorbitant buyout clause (a UTAD theme) would take away a lot of risk. Sure, there would still be a career risk, but that why you involve big $$$.

I'm not advocating Martin's firing at this point, but if it were to happen next year, my desire is for the UTAD to go after someone proven. There isn't a precedent for us hiring someone proven, but there also isn't a lot of credible information out there that shows that coach X refused our offer of $X mil because XYZ. After the football debacle, I'm extremely pessimistic that the current administration could even handle a big hire, but I digress.

In my eyes, automatically shooting down UT's chances at a big hire is just as obscene as advocating the re-hiring of Bruce.

Brent Hubbs said it recently iirc...Stevens was contacted and basically said I'm not coming there no matter what you offer.

Some of the expectations for a coach making $1.3 mil are lofty to say the least. I'd hate to be the coach who took the UT job for $5 mil and then have to impress those same fans. What's an acceptable record/season outcome for $5 mil?

This is not meant to be pro-Martin or anti-Martin either. I just think some of you are in la-la land to think we would ever make a head basketball coach the highest paid in the country. Even if we would, there is a faction of you that would want him run off because he doesn't make the Final Four in year one. Some people on this board have no concept of reality. It's easy to type it out on your keyboard and feel like it makes total sense for us to just open the pocketbook and write Coach X a blank check. The reality is though, that's just never going to happen.

Bingo.

The whole we overpaid argument is an uneducated one. Martin iirc is the 11th highest paid coach in the league, out of 14. So looking that we finished 2nd last year, and ? this year (I'm thinking better than 11th) we haven't overpaid, we actually are getting good value in reality.

Brent Hubbs talked about it recently on VQ, if you have a membership go check it out. If you really think that Zo was our first call you're wrong, it's that simple.

We tried to go after bigger fish, just like with this years football search...but we were turned down multiple times.
