Cutcliffe

fulmer was a fail at head coach in everything but recruiting

for some reason single moms like him

I am far from a Fulmerite but ole Phil did a very good job as HC for a few years.
I think his downhill run started at the end of 2001 season. Until then I had no problem with Phil. I have nothing good to say about him after 2001. He hurt the program bad last few years.

That's how I remember it, but it sounds ludicrous now. Why wouldn't Cut be given the discretion to hire the staff of his choice? Isn't that part of the job description as HC?

That is one reason Vol fans became critical of Hamilton's management (or mismanagement).; They evidently had a deal (per Knoxville newspapers), but Hamilton reneged on it the next day by telling Cut that he could not bring in his own staff. So, Cut backed out. Sorry if I'm wrong, but that was my understanding of the situation at that time.

He was also a very good HC for several years.

I like Cut. He would be a good HC but he is not a splash hire. If TN makes a change, I think it needs to be a big name that will bring excitement to the program and make the top recruits want to play for the Vols. I don't think Cut would bring excitement.

You may be right about Cut, but if he is hired, I hope you are wrong (about the excitement level he would bring).

Nope I think you're exactly right. My cousin claims to have seen a souvenir copy of the KNS that had the headloine of Cut being hired. I remember going to bed that night expecting to wake up and see the press conference, only to wake up and find out that Mike Hamilton had struck again.

NC, SECC, and going to bowl games 14 out of 16 years (I believe that's right, but please correct me if I am wrong) are failures??? Hmmm.... I'll take those failures vs Dooley's successes on field any day.

Cutcliffe is about as inspiring as a cold cup of coffee. I'm serious, that chap could give a pre-game pep talk and put half the team to sleep in the process.

He get's my vote for Bedtime Story Narrator, so the athletes can get a good night's rest before the game, but that's it.

Whatever you say man. You do realize that the point is to win football games right? If you're looking for an inspiring speaker i would love to invite you to my church..

So do I.

Cut is a man of integrity.
He did coach both Peyton and Eli.

Peyton has a very high opinion of Cut.

Did he not go to Duke last year and work with Cut a few days when he was "job searching" ?

No offense to Cut but I'd rather just ride it out with Dooley if he's the best we can bring here.

I can't get excited about that and most fans won't either. It's obvious he was a huge factor in Fulmer's success here but I am not one that wants to put the band back together.

We can do better.

If Hart was standing next to Cut and Dooley and asked the fanbase which coach they wanted to go forward with, I can't imagine many picking Dooley. He does not even give us the chance to win. We go into games hoping to keep it within 2 TD's. That is just crazy IMO.

We may be able to do better, it just depends on what Hart is ready to spend.

everyone that was coached by cut at ut have a high opinion of him, in my opinion the 3 guys they should target would be in no particular order C Strong, Cut, and Gruden.
Gruden would be the big splash hire that most fans want regardless of whether he would be the safest bet.
Cut is Tennesse to the core and as Ainge said during bama week no one at ut hated bama more than cut.
Strong is a hell of a football coach with extensive d coordinator experience in the pressure cooker that is sec football. It wouldn't bother me a bit if Cut was The choice, I'd be willing to bet Tee would be back in Knoxville on the first flight out of lala land, keep pittman and Jay Graham and get back to being Tennesse.
flame on!

I don't think Cutcliffe could hack it in the SEC today. I think he's proven that he's an average coach. His great achievement at Duke is 4 straight losing seasons and one 6 or 7 win season? Sorry, that's not enough. It reminds me alot of how people were talking up Dooley winning 8 games at La Tech once. There are so many coaches out there with more impressive records.

Plus he had his chance in the SEC. He shouldn't have been fired at Ole Miss, but he wasn't exactly coach of the year material either. He won some games with Eli Manning (i.e. the best QB to come out of the SEC in the last decade), but he never competed for a championship of any kind. And that was in the days of a very weak SEC West.

What is lost on all these folks wanting Cutcliff as the new HC, is that Cut was so hard up for a HC job, he jumped on the first thing that moved. Consequently, THAT...more than anything, got Fulmer fired. The offense was in dire straits when Cut was at Ole Miss, and then went back to it afterward. Where is the loyalty to the program and the HC that got him in that position? Both Ole Miss and Duke are dead end destinations.

Why not help Fulmer get the program back to the top again...and THEN a real HC spot would open up? That was a very selfish move on his part. Used Fulmer and UT as nothing but a stepping stone to get another shot. For that reason alone, I don't want anything to do with the guy.

We were in on Terrelle Pryor when he left. Pryor was the No.1 QB in the nation and he liked Cut (cause of his experience with Peyton and Eli). Had he stayed for a few more years, UT would likely have gotten back to the SECC and won. At which point, he would have been a hot commodity.

Cut as the head coach, Chavis as DC, Keep Coaches Graham and Pittman, Bring Tee as WR Coach and I'm a happy camper.

Heard a bit of interesting info today. Now I don't pretend to be in any kind of loop, but a co-worker of mine 's family is good friends with the families of one of the Duke coaches.

Here is what I was told today. One of the offensive coaches was informed by Cutcliffe to be ready for a possible move to Knoxville. Cutcliffe does believe that Dooley won't be retained after the season. Additionally, he believes that he is A favorite for the job. He will accept if offered. He told the coach that he would bring him along to Knoxville to be the new OC. I really don't wanna reveal the coaches name but with enough digging, a fairly intelligent person can figure out who it is.

I know there will be haters and bashers. Feel free to flame away. I think you'll find that in my time here, I don't make this kind of post. Clearly, only time will tell, but I just wanted to pass along what I was told today.

No

Cutcliffe would not even been on Hart's top 10 list for the next HC at Tennessee!

Just a good ole boy

never meanin no harm

LOL, now I will have that song stuck in my head all day. Yes, I would rather have Gruden, but i won't believe that is happening until I see it. I just see this as more realistic, but i would rather have Gruden or Strong. I would much rather have Cut than Petrino, though.

I'm not doubting the OP, but one thing piques my curiosity - why would we get rid of our OC? Chaney at times is hard to figure out, but offense is not our problem. In other words, if it's not broke...........

Because Kurt Roper is a good looking man?

The Stanford run game coordinator. Cut would call his own plays. Overshadowed by Cut's success with the QB's is the fact that we were a power running team when he was OC. And a VERY good one at that. I like your whole staff minus PF.

Good staff but do you really think Phil would take the job. Oh wait, he could another take over if Cut got sick.
