Da Reds thread

You're far too reasonable to post in this thread. God bless you.
Haha. I can see why people would hate the Latos deal. I suppose it all depends on what Jock's vision is. Are we looking to contend in 2015 or long term? If the answer is long term then I think he is setting us up pretty nicely.

Also, just because he's cleared $27M doesn't mean he's going to use it wisely; see Votto & Bailey contracts for reference.

Another point that makes me feel better about the Latos deal is if we had the $$ would we give up the two prospects for one year of control of Latos? Is he 100% healthy? Perhaps not. There is always risk when trading for prospects, but the Reds farm system is plentiful with young arms. Only time will tell if this was a bad trade.

Let's see - reasonable is agreeing that a club going from division champs to 4th of 5 in two seasons while going from 97 to 76 wins with essentially the same line-up is the thing to do. Troll on, TBrown. Doofus comment. Wish the Ignore button worked on quoted posts of others.

Appalachiamuck - I am fine with both deals actually. Not overwhelmingly, but OK. Latos is a 'potential' pitcher in my book. His out pitch is the slider. His fastball had lost a couple MPH with the arm trouble (elbow chips) plus knee. I just don't care for big power pitchers that depend on sliders. That pitch eats elbows over time. So even if they signed him after 2015, there was a good chance he would be on the DL a lot IMO. Simon was lightning in a bottle. Good arm and versatility, but doubtful long term as a starter at 33. He can help Detroit since higher ERA's are OK in the AL with the DH. He can give them a lot of innings.

I really liked the Detroit deal. Suarez should take over SS. Good upside at 23. If so that gives them another trade chip in Cozart. Good potential with the pitchers in both deals. Wallach can hit. He's only been a catcher for a short time so will see how he develops. But guys that can hit usually find their way to the bigs at some point.

The trades add to depth, gain a probable improvement at SS, and free up payroll to get a LF. But where is the LF? It's just our confidence in Walter has been destroyed by these club killing long term contracts to guys that have not earned them. They are totally dependent on Votto, Bruce and BP getting it together; on Frazier and Mesoraco having similar seasons; on Billy stepping up another level with the bat; finding a LF that can hit; solidifying the middle relief; finding two replacements at SP; and most importantly, Price learning how to manage. That is a lot of variables to have answers for to contend for a playoff spot. And it is all on Walter and Bob that it is this way. Meanwhile the others in the division made moves that did make them better with the Cubs obviously on a high trajectory.

Marlon Byrd to the rescue!

I hope 2014 was just an aberration because he was 40+ SO's higher than his worst season at 185. With him and Bruce folks will think they have the air conditioning on high at GABP with all the fanning going on. lol.

He will be 38. Solid pro that could help in the clubhouse. But the bat speed is slowing with that wild swing of his. Hope he will shorten up and drive it in the alleys more because the club really needs a RBI guy that can make good contact. Walter made the deal for the money and the 2 year rental. Phillies are reportedly paying $4 M of the $8 M this season.

not enough for me to follow them this year. going to fish all through baseball season.

yep only thing I like about northern ohio. lake erie.

Well bro, I won't be back to the state for any GABP anytime soon. Will still watch on Fox Sports when I get time. Just got back from the Middletown area and the funeral of my elderly mother. Nice cold, gray, rainy day in crappy Ohio. Enjoy the fishing.

Thanks, z. Appreciate the thoughts. Hope all is well with you and yours.

She was 84, bad heart, broke her pelvis, etc. I have a sister/brother-in-law that live outside Toledo. They are the last of the family still in Ohio - and they want to escape as soon as they can retire.

Thanks, bro. It was time. Guess everybody up there is still celebrating the Bucks win. My brother-in-law wore his OSU gear on a trip to his employer's training event at one of their plants in Anniston, AL. I knew my sister shouldn't have married him. He honestly thought he had a shot to be promoted to the plant manager position there. First, why would anybody want to be there? Second, how long does he think he would be allowed to live in AL if he wears OSU gear around there? That's a death wish. lol.

Bump for positive news. Middle relief with Badenhop as a FA sign, last played for the Bosox and had a good season. Ground ball guy, which should work well with the infield D our guys have.

another season starts today. I predict a .500 season

That sounds about right to me. Most all of the early predictions have them finishing 4th or last in the division. Just can't see how they are going to be better. Lost two SP's and Bailey will probably be later getting going. Down 3 proven SP's to start a season is not good.

What do you think of the new rules? Love they are going to speed it up. Jay Bruce will have to take his meds to keep from dancing out of the box every pitch since you have to keep one foot in all of the time unless you have a broken bat or something. Will either help him or drive him to a nervous breakdown. lol.

Never understood coming out to appeal for a replay anyway. Not allowed to argue anymore. Just yell at the ump and tell him. I can remember many a game growing up that was 2 hours to 2 hrs and 15 minutes. Move it along and more fans will come and watch it on TV.

Well - Mat Latos blew the club up today. Slammed the medical staff as well as the player leadership/work ethic. Tell us something we don't know, Mat. Sure has Price and Walter dancing in the press, which has been amusing.

Now Votto has joined in the fun, chastising the media and attacking the need for rah-rah/pats on the ass leadership. This will not end well. lol.

quarter of a billion dollar bench player.lol

The message boards around Cincy are lighting it up. The guy simply cannot communicate. It's like his brain is constipated. After he finished I still didn't understand what he said. But he probably felt he had set everybody straight and had laid down the law. lol.

SP's
Cueto
Leake

Deep Breath

Marquis
Iglesias
DeSclafani

With Maholm in long relief. All of it until Gomer is ready. They say mid-April, more likely May IMO. More than likely this is either going to be surprisingly good or really, really bad.

Brutal schedule in the first two months.

To quote the Marshall Tucker Band, "I am searchin' for a rainbow..." Geez. Iglesias - reliever for his pro career in Cuba. Has pitched a big 10 innings in several games in ST. Marquis - was 2009 since he threw 200 innings, 132 is the next highest since then, and he had the Tommy John missing all last season at age 36. DeSclafani - 129 innings pitcher in the minors.

On paper this is bad ugly. Homer comes back to take one of them out. Cingrani keeps working in the pen to maybe take another one out. Hopefully at least one of them gets the job done. But Cueto and Leake have to stay healthy. What a mess. Back to Sparky ball. Get the hook out after 5.
