This wasn't anything Nike wanted. They stated that had no part in the name change and never suggested doing away with the Lady Vols logo. This was all the AD.I guess whatever Nike wants, UT will bend over and hand it to them. 'Tis a shame. And, to the posters that portray LV fans as blue hairs and middle age, you might want to attend a game sometime to see the real face of the Lady Vols fans.

Tennessee women
At the behest of Nike and Tennessees athletic department, the Lady Vols are being eliminated in place of the resoundingly male Power T for every team except womens basketball, for commercial reasons. The exception is being made out of respect for coach emeritus Pat Summitt, who long opposed this ridiculous move because, as one of the great promoters in sports history, she understands what a mistake it is to confuse branding with some lame idea of sameness.
Here's the deal - it's not going to change, because Dave Hart would have to admit he was wrong, and he is incapable of doing that.
If Hart ever leaves, and the subsequent AD realizes what was lost in the change, he will bring back the logo for the women's sports. He'll be a hero to the people who care about it, thus enlarging his support base - AND, they'll sell a ton of merchandise the first couple of years.
In the meantime, I'm sitting back, watching Mr. Hart make enemies, waiting till he makes a mistake and looks around to see who has his back. I predict the crowd of people in his corner will be few.

You cried over whether a softball player gets to put four more letters on her jersey? Testosterone treatment...not the synthetic version...got it last year...I'm doing great!
No.
What is the difference between a guy like Kiffin standing up at his introductory press conference and talking about the great tradition of the football program, then walking over to the football facilities and putting up USC highlights to motivate the players and show what he can do and...
Hart standing up at his press conference talking about the great tradition at Tennessee and now calling former players vindictive while he un-assembles decades of their hard work without giving them a say so?
There is no difference. In both cases they play lip service to the traditions of Tennessee while trying to make themselves look important.
Couple that with the fact that the men's sports are mired in mediocrity and he decides to spend his energy on THIS? I've never heard one fan of UT Sports have an issue with the different logos...'til now.
Truth? I never cared...the Vols part is what I focus on...I still don't believe Hart had nefarious intent when attempting to streamline the brand...this had to pass a lot of different eyes in the university before it was announced. Blaming it on one man's agenda seems disingenuous.
But when I hear former graduates of the University say they are "ashamed" and telling stories about how they are treated for instance in the weight room when the people training them say "finish up on your own, here come the men we have to go" and I think about the field day opposing coaches are going to have with this...
How is it worth all this negativity?
I heard from a fan that the women athletes, now that they share facilities & trainers with the men, only get access when men aren't using them. I'd wondered if that was an exaggeration, but if athletes themselves are saying it, it must be true. It sounds like they were better off when they had separate facilities, even if they were lower quality, because they always had access and they always had their own trainers - didn't have to wait in line behind the guys. This isn't going to help the athletes.
I have no idea who is behind it or what the motivation is...disingenuous is perfect for Hart's words. It started back at the end of the Summitt/ beginning of Jennings where we have on the record that he had spoken with Pat about the issue and how angered she was that he went on the radio and said there had been no discussion about it, I actually heard that interview.
He said this had to do with Nike, Nike said they had nothing to do with it in no uncertain terms.
He said he spoke to current teams and coaches yet several current players said that didn't happen.
I'm like you, I didn't really have an opinion and even this morning, well...this wasn't on my list of things to do.
