Developing story on Mel Tucker

Which raises a very interesting question. He was absolutely bone headed about this, but if his depiction of the events are true, she very much an instigator in this and a lot of the evidence falls in line with his side of the story(27 phone calls, the length of time she was on the phone, not filing a complaint for 8 months when here next appearance had been cancelled, gifts)....lets say for arguments sake that she led him on and set this up. What are the chances that Michigan st played a hand in this in order to get out of this ridiculous 95 mil contract after his 5-7 season last year?
That was my original thought. It's a great setup, if true.

Michigan State saves millions and this lady sues Michigan State and "settles" out of court for an undisclosed amount.

If Tucker can prove collusion, this will get juicy.

I would be shocked if the University played any role in this.

It doesn't really matter what you call it. He can be terminated for cause for it, and Mich St is almost certainly going to do so because of that contract. You could be terminated immediately for doing this exact same thing in any job, and you probably would if your employer already didn't really care for you.

If he's still putting up 11-2 seasons, this either never sees the light of day or the University goes to bat for him.
There’s no PLURAL of those. In full, uninterrupted seasons it’s been 5-7 cept for that outlier. That got him his current contract…sparing LSU.

Then it would be one of the most interesting CFB stories in recent memory. However Occam's Razor says there wasn't a conspiracy...he's just an idiot.

I just have trouble believing: coach is tugging it while on the phone with a sexual assault victim/sexual harassment activist that had spoken to his team previously.

If I saw this premise on the back of Grisham novel I'd think, "Stretching reality quite a bit these days aren't you?"

I definitely think Mel Tucker should be fired but I have to ask the same question that *gulp* Uncle Lou brought up, why didn't she just hang up the phone if it was offensive?
I can’t speak for her but in my own experience as a woman who was sexually harassed, I frankly just sort of froze and when I got an opportunity, went back to work. It stuck with me for very obvious reasons and did not feel good about it so I called my boss the next day and explained the situation and transferred to avoid it (in my case it was just an extremely inappropriate remark that was very sexual by a much older man. I was only 21 and working at a store in Gatlinburg.)

The accuser in this case is in her 40s and more expectanced, but also undoubtedly still highly traumatized from her gang rape 20 years ago. I do not know what her immediate reaction is to being triggered so I cannot and will not speculate on it.

I’m just explaining what happened to me and why it may apply here. As I’ve said before, I’m a big supporter of innocent until proven guilty so the burden of proof is on her not him. But “why didn’t she hang up the phone?” Is a reasonable question to ask but as I’ve said, there are legitimate reasons why she might not have and still not consented to it.

With the Tucker deal Guess Steele was only possible winning pick from the left over short straws at the end of CPF’s first week in office as AD.

I had hoped to name him interim for the next year. At the time he might have bought it for a shot at his alma mater.

Sometimes timing just stinks.

He claims that she encouraged it and texted him a sexy picture of her to help him along. If that picture was indeed sent, advantage Tucker

In his letter, Tuckers says in part "...it was an entirely mutual, private event between two adults living at opposite ends of the country. she initiated the discussion that night, sent me a provocative picture of the two of us together, suggested what she may look like without clothes, and never once during the 36 minutes did she object in any manner, much less hang up the phone." He also said about the woman behind the complaint, "Her twisting of our personal relationship months after it concluded is designed to revive her career and destroy my life, precipitated by her greed."

It's challenging to sort out fact from fiction by reading the press but it appears that it was consensual and that she didn't bring this up until months later, when the relationship broke off. My guess is Mel will be fired and he'll collect a decent buyout but not the enormous number that he thinks he should get

I don't think you're correct. I believe it's only harassment if it's unwanted on her part
You think Michigan State University is okay with a professor having a relationship, even a consensual relationship, with an adult student in one of their classes?

Do you think Michigan State University is okay with an admin having a consensual relationship with someone in the office?

Do you think Michigan State University is okay with a coach having a consensual relationship with someone on staff?

Based on the above answers, do you think Michigan State University is okay with a coach having a consensual relationship with a contractor being paid by the athletic department?

No to question 1. Yes to questions 2 and 3 if it's consensual.

Sexual harassment under Title IX includes any unwelcome sexual conduct, such as unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal, nonverbal, or physical conduct of a sexual nature.

Note that the term "unwelcome" is mentioned more than once

Can you find me a definition that doesn't include "unwelcome"?

Am I the only one who did not understand a single bit of that first sentence at all ? Some more context please.
I think he’s saying Pruitt, Tucker, and Steele were Fulmer’s list of possible coaches. With the Tucker sexual harassment deal and Pruitt basically being a terrible coach and somehow an even worse cheater, that leaves Steele as the only one of those that might have been a decent coach. Or at least that’s what I’m getting from it.

When the person reports it, it was unwelcome. How is that not obvious?

Are you of the opinion that perhaps a rape didn't occur if it's not reported in a timely manner?

Why is harassment different?

Posters are getting themselves sidetracked on this one. HER culpability in the matter isn’t at issue in dealing with HIS employment. Whether she instigated, encouraged what not has nothing to do with his self-admitted conduct…the ONE caveat in his contract that allows him to be cut loose without a cent. Shame and disrepute to the program. Doesn’t matter if there was a sting operation set up. When he pulled it out it was his action. I said early on that they may float a lifeline settlement to avoid embarrassing details revealed in court, but also to use his narrative when potentially settling with her later on.

Nope. He can (and still would) be canned for having an inappropriate relationship with a woman who, while she wasn't an employee, had a professional/business relationship with him. That's the point people keep missing with this. Even if Mel's account of events is 100% accurate and truthful, Michigan St can and will fire him for cause based on the moral turpitude clause. They have buyer's remorse on the contract they signed him to, and he gave the school a get out of jail free card.

The only way Mel comes out of this as something other than the villain is if the woman and the school conspired to set him up. I love a good conspiracy theory, but there's no way that happened.
