Lots of disappointment on the field. We still found ways to lose in situations where we had a chance for a big win. The lone exception being the win over South Carolina - a game in which, for once, the other team decided to fall apart in the crunch instead of us.
In retrospect, after considering all the talent that departed after last season on offense (Bray, Patterson, Hunter), it is not surprising that we had a similiar result on the field in terms of wins and losses.
For me, the loss to Vanderbilt really ruined what I would have otherwise said was a decent effort for our new coaching staff. It just left a really, really bad taste to have watched our defense play so well all game and then during that last drive seemingly become unable to defend a pass. The 4th and inches play really wasn't that big of a surprise -- it is tough to keep a decent team from gaining an inch under any conditions. Vandy's not a bad team, but we should have won that one, and we didn't.
The recruiting results are encouraging, but I am hesitant to get too excited about it until I see how these young guys pan out on the field. I am hopeful but remain in a "wait and see" mindset.
I think that this is probably where most of the fanbase is right now: feeling decent about the future becuase of the incoming recruits but extremely disappointed that we fell one game short (again) of making a bowl game. I think we are all slightly hopeful but after being burned for quite a few years now, most of us remain somewhat doubtful until actual results emerge on the field. That's the unfortunate result of Phillip Fulmer's decent into mediocrity over the last few years of his tenure, Lane Kiffin's buffoonery in his disastrous one year on the job, and Derek Dooley's absolute incompetence.
Someday, our Volunteers will be back to the top! We've got the best fans in the world! Go Big Orange!!!!
