Dobbs tries out for baseball

I think this is more of an indication of leaving pro sports in his future. He wont project as an NFL qb but he could spend a couple seasons in minors to get some immediate good money before he follows the dream od Aeronautical engineering. Since Im sure you just dont get elite jobs like that right out of college.

He will make tons more $ using his degree right out of college than he will the minors.

Terrible pay in minor league baseball

What if he is AA or AAA ball? Single A is pretty weak. And a 1 time signing bonus opens peoples eyes.

Only way Dobbs get good signing bonus $ would be to sign this year.

He will make more $ than he would even in AAA with the kind of job he is going to get

The average salary for a AAA baseball player is 12,500 a year. They get paid almost less than minimum wage if you go by yearly salary. The bonus that some receive is about 15% of that............still looking at being pretty broke.

It's not that bad

All these people complaining about him possibly missing football time because of this.... If Jameis Winston can do it, Mr. Dobbs can certainly do it. You only get one chance at playing collegiate sports so I'm all for him trying to take full advantage of his athleticism while he has. If he never did it, it may have been something he regretted not doing later in life and had him thinking "what if". I for one hopes he makes the team because they could use any help after the last few years.

Anybody else think that maybe CDS wanted some leadership from Dobbs on his baseball team??? We have made back to back SEC tourney appearances for the first time in a long time! CDS is trying to get the guys to a regional and what if he feels like having Dobbs on the team puts them into that position? Or that maybe having Dobbs on the team will help them win the rubber match in SEC series

Any word on which positions he would try our for? Outfield, infield, or possible pitcher? I hope not a pitcher. We don't need to take a chance on his arm getting messed up. I'm all for this though. We haven't had a good baseball team since Todd Helton days. Maybe Dobbs can help us out!

I must have dreamed the 2001 and 2005 CWS appearances then.

Until a minor league player is placed on a 40-man roster, monthly salaries are $1150 for the short season teams, $1300 for low A and $1500 for high A. For players repeating a year at the same level, the salary goes up $50 each year. For AA, the monthly salary is $1700 and it goes up $100 per month for subsequent years. For AAA, the monthly salary is $2150 per month and it goes up to $2400 the second year and $2700 the third year.
If a player becomes a minor league free agent, higher salaries can be negotiated.
A player must be placed on the team’s 40-man roster or be subject to the Rule 5 Draft at the end of his fourth season (if signed at age 19 or higher) or fifth season (if signed at age 18 or lower).
Salary for first year on 40-man roster:
2013: $39,900
2014: $40,750
2015: $41,400Salary for second year on 40-man roster or if one or more days of Major League service time:
2013: $79,900
2014: $81,750
2015: $82,700Meal money is $25 per road day.
Minor league salary must be at least 60% of the player’s combined minor league and Major League salary in the preceding season.

Remember that those salaries are only paid per month that they actually play (6 months I think)

The dude is a 20-something college student. You only get these experiences once in a lifetime. He should do whatever the flip he wants.

Personally I hope he tries out, kills it, and helps the baseVols win a few more games... Especially if it is true he won't miss any spring practice.

Right on! If he loves Baseball enough that he wants to play, them I say more power to him. Our BaseVols should can use some help this season. From what I can remember reading on Dobbs coming out of high school, he was a excellent BB player, and had some offers to play BB. I try to go to atleast 10 games a year, and its going to be pretty cool seeing Dobbs with our BaseVols. I wish him all the luck for his first season playing for CDS.

"he has worked out some Serrano said he doesn't know what the baseball future is this season."

Must have finally watched Dobbs throw which brings up the question has Serrano not watched any UT football this year?

It's bad pay for sure

Most of them are getting pay from feb-sept though and 2-3k a month.

Dobbs would make much much more with his degree

Too much stake for you or him? If he wants to play baseball and can help out the team by all means he should. He's in college, let him enjoy it........

You're right, Old Timer, I'm being totally selfish. Let's think about some scenarios, though. Dobbs hurts his rotator cuff on a throw during baseball season and requires surgery. He's out for the football season and we chalk up a couple of losses to him not being the QB in those games. I will be the only one upset with his decision. Next.

A major injury is certainly the worst case scenario. We would be thankful for our qb depth but we would still have someone making their first collegiate start.

Let's say he does both and sails a bunch of throws in the orange and white game. Think everyone is still cool with him playing baseball?

Even if he just has a mediocre start to the football season. How many people blame playing baseball for it?

you may want to call the safety police and get him off the scooter too! Chances of a part-time position player requiring rotator cuff surgery is slim.

If he wants to play baseball and can earn a spot on the team, great for him. I'm all for it........

Probably infield if I had to guess. I think he was a pretty good shortstop/third baseman coming out of high school and I thought I recall hearing something about him being recruited to the baseball team when he flipped to us from ASU so he's gotta have at least some talent. I would personally like to see him in the outfield tracking down fly balls with that speed he has.

You don't throw a baseball the same way you would a football so as long as he continues practicing with his mechanics when he's not on the baseball field it shouldn't be an issue. The only thing I would be concerned about would be him pulling a hammy running the bases. Then I think you would hear a lot of people voicing their displeasure with him playing baseball because of injury.
