Dr. Jerry Punch Believes Hire Complete

I think a big part of the interview is when he said "I haven't talked to anyone at UT." I guarantee he's involved enough to be talking around and inquiring about it. If he did know (which I don't think he knows for sure) he still wouldn't say that, because he would have been told in confidence. This is a big hire for our program, and I think he is right that we probably have someone already in agreeement. With this big of a hire, we would have a lot more activity and a lot more leaks going on. You don't have to trust Dr. Punch and just say Gruden, but there is validity in his statements. I think he has a pretty good idea. I've heard him flat out say "I don't know" when he doesn't.

basically will look like punch stole the thunder of knox media, even though it was just pure speculation that was brought about by deductive reasoning that hart has to already have had his guy by the way the "search" has been going. rucker seems put out by dr. punch...i love it

I posted this in the main football thread earlier...

I know for a fact that Dr. Jerry Punch believes its Jimbo Fisher.

I have family at Clemson and through the university they have become friends with Punch.

I was told it had something to do with a sick child of Fisher's.

I am not trying to start another rumor party, but seeing Punch's name on the front page forced my hand.

Do with the information what you will.

EDIT: Let me just say that I'm not suggesting that what Punch believes is fact, just that he does believe its Fisher.

Now way in this world would Jimbo Fisher leave Fla. St. for Tennessee!!

Why not? The ACC is in decline. An SEC job assures he's on national TV and.... he'll get a pay day. Some have speculated that changes in their AD may lead him to look around. Someone also said that he and Hart have a relationship. He can recruit the whole southeast and has relationships in every important recruiting state except for maybe Tennessee.

There are signs that point to him.

Then why did he say he thinks it's Gruden?

strong or smart = major meltdown.

Explain why you do not think Strong would be a good hire.

He's winning at L'ville after Kragthorpe couldn't. He can definitely recruit. He's a D coach first. His players seem to love playing for him but he can also maintain discipline.

He said that it is too quiet. I thought it was interesting.

It's too quiet because that's what Hart does. He keeps his cards close to the vest all the time from what I've read on GVX247. They said that he's just got a very, VERY small circle that knows what he's doing, and that actually a lot of the big money guys don't have a ton of say in who's hired, but they're trusting him because of his polar opposite nature to Hamilton. Hart is giving the big boosters opportunity for input, but in the end, the decision is Hart's.

I hope he's wrong about Jimbo

I think Strong would be a good hire, but I'd be skeptical of Smart because he's another coordinator with no HC experience. There's just too much of a chance that he could flop in the transition, and I think that's what would cause a VN meltdown. JMO.

I didin't hear the interview but read this on the other site, a good perspective from a poster on TOS:

"Dr. Punch certainly acted as if he thought it was Gruden. He all but came out and said as much. Hyams was definitely caught off guard.
He said that typically when a coaching search is going on he heard from other coaches asking about what's going on. He says that he has heard nothing which leads him to think Hart has his man.
He talked about how everything points to Gruden, how he has been calling potential assistants and asking people about working with the 20 hour rule and such.
I just got out of the car and thought the board would be flooded by this encouraging development.
Jerry Punch is the most connected sports media person in Knoxvile. Hell, he's one of the most connected in sports, period.
This is good news Vols fans."

Whomever Hart hires, some will be upset. The only exception is J Gru and I don't see it happening even though I wish it would.

"Dear Santa...

All I want for Christmas is a head coach for UT who will be able to recruit his share of 5* talent, coach up those kids that have the desire but lack some ability, make half-time adjustments, recognize untapped talent residing on the bench and that games are won/lost in the trenches, motivate players to play for their own pride and that of the school instead of adopting a "business-like" approach that is more applicable in the NFL, teach how to play as a team instead of a bunch of individual contributors, believe in the traditions of UT, coach a defense that can protect against the QB keep-option and 40+ yard passes consistently, respect the fan base and acknowledge the past 4 years of misery we've all endured...and lastly...put more emphasis on a dual threat QB instead of the next "strong-armed,first round, gunslinger pick" in the NFL. Thank you Santa."

The key is used to be before ABC and ESPN had a shared interest. Punch is not a football insider at all and never was. If he reports Jimmy Johnson is leaving Hendrick, then you should listen.

I am certainly not saying that he is providing correct information, but I heard a while back that he had his own satellite radio show. So, don't just dismiss him as a NASCAR guy. He knows more about college football than you think.

He didn't say that.

This is the most sad case of wishful thinking I have ever seen.
