Electric Vehicles

Who here got mad and called the feds?

We've agreed that taxes need to be lowered. We've agreed that that is our preference.

Also, welcome to the club. We can all hope taxes go away. **** in your own hand while we hope. Not mine.
You can't hope they go away and still want new taxes imposed on others at the same time.

This sure is a far cry from what the repubs said while Trump was hiding his tax returns. The user of "loopholes" was celebrated then

AGAIN... Who is celebrating the new tax? You were acting like you, EV owners, "liberal elites" are being targeted and singled out. We pointed out differently. Geez, man. What do you want, for us to send you roses and put on sackcloth and ashes?

You act like we wrote our representatives and ratted you out. Get over yourself, already.

Plenty like yourself are just fine with a new tax being levied on citizens

Read the direct quotes from the bill sponsors. It's absolutely targeting and they make it clear this is about punishing wealthy liberal elites so the base won't object. They won't recognize it's just a new tax going to a wasteful govt since it's owning the libs. That's exactly how it's framed and you'd know that if you read the link

Except nothing was carved out. This is the oil company captured gop pushing to ensure the fed govt class back additional taxes. Meanwhile they aren't pushing to spend the additional (or even existing) revenue on infrastructure. Cut it for all as long as you're punishing labor with income taxes

Interesting how I was called out by conservatives for advocating for fewer govt tax. The had tax had always been a ridiculous expense for the payer but a great fund for the collectors
It is an exception. The gas tax is to pay for road maintenance caused by the vehicles that use it. EVs don't use gas, making them an exception to that tax.

You didn't start out pushing to cut gas taxes. You were just ticked that your exception was going away. You pivoted to the unjustness of the gas tax later

I've actually called gas taxes trash for years. They're usually just ignored which is what the Feds want

There was no actual exception it was just not covered. Now the gop is pushing for a new tax to be levied against their enemies (only way to really read their quotes) and "conservatives " are in favor. Weird world

I don't care about getting rid of the tax break. However the Trump admin has floated the idea of a break for gas trucks. That will have a much greater impact but won't have the boogeyman ev attached

The nation's elite with their luxury vehicles must pay their "fair share" instead of sponging off the poor? It's cheap class politics. The tax is being sold to ignorant rubes who think anyone driving a Tesla is super wealthy. There aren't enough ev to make a difference and this is purely punitive.

The govt can do infrastructure without a miniscule, one-time $1k penalty to ev owners. Can we tax people who have no cars and use public transportation? Those busses aren't hovercraft
Quit your liberal whining. The tax is being proposed on EV's because EV drivers (whether they're wealthy or not) don't pay fuel taxes that are used for road maintenance. EV's should have ALWAYS been assessed a usage tax to cover road maintenance. It shouldn't be a one-time $1K tax. It should be a usage tax based on power charged by the EV or mileage driven, but you'd have to be able to accurately measure it.

The liberal in favor of lower taxes and smaller govt? Guilty as charged I guess

Already do pay a higher registration fee. The quotes from the bill sponsors show this is about more than just a small amount of missed tax revenue (that they don't actually need btw)

Musk and Tesla are their enemies?

You don't think that "liberal elite" isn't rolling around in one of their nicest models?

They made it pretty clear who the target was
Some direct quotes from the article mentioning income levels:

- cover the cost for the luxuries of the nation’s elite.

- handouts to our adversaries and high-income individuals

- The days of liberal elites in their expensive EV’s

You're the ones pushing for new taxes and increased revenue for the fed govt. That's not my stance
I'm saying that the federal government never should have been in the business of subsidizing EV's (via tax credits and via the failure to properly assess road maintenace taxes on them) in the first place.

The property tax goes to everything…fire department, schools, library, roads, etc. And they’ve tacked on an additional road fee. I think Spartanburg repealed theirs a couple of years ago but Greenville still has it. The roads are just god awful here and living in the I-85 I-26 corridor the trucks keep all roads tore all to hell. It’s like a constant work zone 24/7/365. All the assclowns moving here doesn’t help.

Yep. Soukerlina has the worst roads in the Southeast IMO. NC roads suck, but not nearly as bad as SC. You can immediately tell when you enter SC on any of the thousand roads that cross the NC/SC line...because the roads go to crap immediately and make much more noise. SC doesn't have vehicle inspections though...which is great IMO. Inspections in NC are a hassle because of the hundred different reasons you may have a check engine light on. O2 sensors etc are a real pain for example on aging vehicles. Many times people dont want to put that money into an old vehicle thats near the end of its life...but in NC you have no choice. Its all just a moneymaking scam for the state just like speeding tickets and driving infractions that don't endanger others. Bastards. Ticks and Leeches.

I'm a conservative with an EV, which is no heavier than other comparable ICE cars, and my registration skyrocketed this year. An additional tax would negate the savings I current enjoy by not buying gas. Get rid of that, and the motivation to purchase an EV drops significantly.

Oh, and roundabouts were a lot more fun when I drove a Jeep.

"Closing a loophole" is simply increasing tax revenue paid to the govt. Tomato/tomato

The goal of a conservative should be to lower everyone's taxes not to punish your neighbor. In the Trump tax thread it sure seemed like lots were on his side. Guess that's what I get by being part of the ultra wealthy liberal elite driving my luxury vehicle (all terms thrown at me by repubs). I probably deserve it for owning a $57k truck that drives me around
They're never going to eliminate fuel taxes, and everybody knows that. You're just whining because your exemption from paying road maintenance costs is about to evaporate.

It's charged at purchase and I'm not in the market

Why are you in favor of increased taxes to the fed govt? Do they need more revenue?

They only subsidized them with the credit. Not charging a fee that's never been levied before is not a subsidy

Yes. Well the government never should have been involved in trying to motivate anyone to purchase an EV.

Taxes to pay for road maintenance are not charged at purchase. You should not enjoy a special exemption from paying for the maintenance of roads because you bought an EV.

Yea we dumped the inspection sticker for the property tax. It’s best to buy a new vehicle right after you pay property taxes, assuming you’re trading in. That new vehicle property tax bill is a tough bill to swallow.
