Evaluating Martin's recruiting

It was also his first class.

He got a really good contributor his first year, and role player, and a possible role player, with all three improving.

That's a nice first class.

you cannot say from the beginning of the year to the end that Yemi improved.

well you could, but i'd question your basketball evaluation skills.

I think the improvement of Yemi has been considerable to this point since he got here. He needs experience more than anything and he would be a great contributor

Martin has had terrible starts of the season ,which has kept us out of the dance. We were good enough to make the field. losing to mercer at home in the first round of the NOT isn't acceptable on any level

28th scout, 22nd 247, not in the top 30 rivals. it is an improvement - but they have to do better than that.

We need to get back to playing and recruiting at the same level we were - and we need to be back in the dance every year. If Florida Gulf Coast can get there - we need to be able to get there. By the way - go FGCU go.

Yeah. Beat Florida.

Keep building the talent so B.P. can step back in and coach it correctly once the show clause is complete.:D

I've heard if KY didn't have room Noel was coming to Tennessee so lets give Martin credit for him then.

hmm not really even close to the same thing is it

truth is stokes didnt get to play his senior year for some asinine reason - then had the credits to graduate early - chose to do so - since outside a normal recruiting cycle much fewer schools had spots open - sure he liked TN but if you don't think all those other highly abnormal factors played a part you are deluding yourself

and how often does a situation like that come up with a 5 star recruit? that is the first one i have heard of so not exactly landing a big boy in a normal way - Hubbs would be the first time that has happened

Yemi is going into his junior year and struggles to do anything effectively and looked like he regressed this year.

I was hoping he would get a redshirt year in somewhere before he's a senior...maybe next year is the year? Realistically even without Maymon we probably could've gotten away with it this last year. With our capability of going with a 4 guard lineup at times and having plenty of guards...maybe stokes/Maymon/Davis/Reese can man the inside and yemi can redshirt, that would really benefit him IMO.

Are you sure he didn't get to play or chose not to play because he wanted to graduate early? That's not unheard of. Tony Delmonico dropped out of high school, got his GED and played at UT a year early.

Pretty sure he was ineligible to play. He had played in some unsanctioned AAU games in the summer or something like that. When he first saw the floor here it had been like 7 or 8 months since he had played organized ball. IIRC

Florida had room for stokes, but it's ok don't give Martin credit for him.

He was ineligible because he transferred schools within the memphis district or something to that effect...I'm sure there's a technical term or wording but he tried to transfer to Southwind and that's not allowed.

Yeah you can't just transfer schools for athletic reasons only. That's the way it appeared when stokes wanted to switch schools.

Actually very logical. It's all about what school is in your district and all that. I live in Indiana so we have the same thing. They just don't want anybody and everybody joining up and going to one school because they're good already. You used to be able to transfer schools within your county no problem but they changed it to districts

Miller and Yemi are leftovers from Pearl's tenure. But by and large you're right we have 4 players that are legit on any one's roster, several others that are legit role players could be on many teams roster, a couple coming in that should help immediately, and a couple of projects. Biggest needs are a true center and a legit point guard. To me I am needing a PG I recruit a true point guard not a combo guard or a two guard that many thinks might be turned into a PG, give me a point guard. If you cannot get a center here in the states the comb the rest of the world and get one but get us a center preferably a 7 footer (+), please.

Darius Thompson - IMO, another kind of recruit you want to see Martin pull in. I'm a little worried about his ball-handling and quickness, but I am confident that Martin is doing everything he can to fix the problem. I think Thompson will end up being a contributor next season, but I admit that he may have the potential to be not be helpful. Again, we'll see.

Overall, I give the OP an A for his analysis.
A detail like the bolded part jumped off the page, because of how good everything else was.

I don't see how Martin could be doing anything right now to improve Thompson's skills while he is still in high school.

Fix our general ball-handling problem. I said I wasn't sure if Thompson could do it, but I will put my faith in Martin in believing he's doing everything he can to address it, i.e., adding Thompson.

Check out the NBA, centers are becoming more rare each year. Pretty soon the game is going to be just guards and forwards.

A couple hundred of my closest friends and I were at that Mercer game - it was possibly the worst excuse for effort - motivation -basketball that I have witnessed in well forever. Just awful -- I'd like to have that whole day erased. It was like watching Steven Pearl playing all 5 positions for us. It was that painful to watch.

We were going to go. (honest truth) I remembered what a great time we had at the Georgetown game when UT played them at home in the NIT. General admission totally changes the atmosphere. It was a rowdy 8k. So much more exciting without the walking dead (donors) taking up the premo seats. Even though UT lost, it was a blast. Slay and the big guy from the Hoyas were fun to watch.
But first I asked myself if I really believed this team was going to play to win? The answer was a resounding, no. Based on Cuonzo's comments about 'doing enough' and the Bama effort, there was no way I would waste my time. And based on what I could tell, CCM was indifferent to either loss.

I will just say that one team looked well prepared and well scouted and one team looked like Miami did against Marquette last night.

Looked like a Wade Houston coached team where our point guard plays the entire game without an assist --Mercer made layup after layup on crisp cuts and plays and we looked like a pickup team that had formed in the parking lot 5 minutes before tip off. One without a point guard I might add.

Were it not for Stokes we would have lost by 20. Comparable to having Carson Newman take us to the woodshed in Neyland in football.
