F1 thread

Monaco is the worst circuit on the schedule. there's nothing great about narrow street circuits with no passing.

it's the tradition and location that make the race, not anything that happens on track.

Exactly. Kind of like Indianapolis is to Nascar.

Monaco is a track meant for bicycles and nothing more. Tradition is the only reason people even care about this track because its useless.

Any thoughts on Ferrari pulling out of the '10 season if the voluntary $60M cap is put in place? I think it would lead to the demise of F1, especially if McClaren leaves also. This could be the end of Max Mosley's control.

just as bad, toyota and both red bull teams say they're leaving if the rules don't change. it's going to get interesting

How many years has it been since the racing got more attention than political squabbling in F-1?

for as bad of a rap as monaco gets, i thought it was a pretty decent race. not as boring as it has been in years past.

Monaco was ok, like always no passing though. I'm interested in what will happen about the teams and the cap on money. If they do this I'm dropping F1.

The Associated Press: F1 teams form breakaway series

Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso made it clear in the paddock on Thursday that he would leave F1 if his Renault team pulled out of F1.
"For me the new Formula One would be unattractive, with the small teams and no drivers," Alonso said. "We want to compete with the best teams in the world, the maximum technology: We all want to compete with the best drivers.
"If this is not what Formula One is about next year, then it will be another category with that. I won't retire, I will drive for another championship."

Dear Fernando,

We will glady welcome you to the IRL.

Sincerely,

I'll still refuse to watch IRL even if Ferrari is involved.
Ferrari and McLaren need to get some other defectors and make a new series. Even if they have to run a limited number of races, they'll still get coverage.

Alonso could come to NASCAR next year. I think he's at least as marketable as Montoya. If F1 truly splits up it will cripple the sport. NASCAR could go on a full on blitz here and overtake F1/FOTA by bringing in a couple of the defectors that don't want to race in the split series.

Just imagine if they brought in Alonso and coaxed Michael Schumacher out of retirement. Heck, IRL could immediately establish their presence if they brought in a couple of those guys too. It won't make the IRL rise to CART like levels of the 80s but it would be another step in the right direction.

On the flipside if NASCAR wants to make a statement they could grab a couple of them like I said above. Plus, if they do bring in Danica from the IRL NASCAR can make a statement to everyone and say "Everyone that's anyone wants to be in NASCAR."

Of course I don't know if I could stand Brian France's ego expanding that much more either. I will say that all of this stuff will be very interesting and the things that happen the rest of this year could shape racing as we know it for the next 10-15 years. NASCAR is definitely on the verge of becoming the premier racing league in the world if this F1/FOTA split goes through.

the sun has a better chance of not rising tomorrow than NASCAR does of getting Michael Schumacher to 1. un-retire and 2. drive one of their cars. it will NEVER happen, and if it does, i'll leave this place for good. furthermore, nobody could afford his asking price.

i'm fairly certain Danica Patrick won't be in NASCAR next year. but if she's dumb enough to actually try (which she just may be), it will be a failure of epic proportions. if the rumors of her potential move to Ganassi are true, she would be a complete idiot for turing him down to drive in NASCAR.

NASCAR will never be the premier racing league in the world until they begin racing on other continents, which, given their current state, nobody could afford to do. there's plenty of sports car and lower level open wheel series around the world ready to step into the the void a potential F1 split would leave.

I hear she's going to Roush.

And on F1, the split is off, they reconciled this morning and Mosley is gonna be out this year(supposedly).

really, i don't care where she goes. even i'm tired of hearing about her and i used to (semi) defend her. she'll make money in NASCAR, but she won't have any success. i haven't seen anything about Roush.

and i'll believe Mosley is out when he's really and truely gone. from what i gather, he won't seek another election, but really isn't stepping down either.

I still cant believe Mosley didnt go after the whole Nazi sex scandal. But i (again) dont see anyway in which he can stay in power, and if Eccelston doesnt change his tune he will be out.

Im against the idea of a cap anyway, F1's main appeal is that its the cutting edge of technology. Put a cap and they go into another boring series where there not USP and fans will just go elsewhere and it would fold anyway.
