Game Thread Lady Vols at West Virginia

Collier likes to play on the low block so i think KK has a chance there

She can hit the 3 though so someone still has to close if she catches on the perimeter. Lots of ways to skin the cat.

Amb is right, their guards are not as good last year. I expect to see us run that extended 2-3 trapping zone a good bit. Pressure the ball and see if we can force some TOs and limit Colliers touches that way as well.

I always felt that when they are trapping well, they go on more extended runs. Lots of forced turnovers for the other team. Horston is really good playing that defense. The trouble is that when they don't play it well, they give up easy hoops when the press is broken.

Coach Harper tends to give up on that defense early when not working. I'd like to see her use it more.

I can't imagine those small Texas guards being able to do much to slow down Burrell, Horston and Davis. They should have a field day against them; the Texas guards aren't as good as the WVU ones...although they are better coached.
They might play more zone as Tennessee hasn't shown much from the outside. Davis could get hot!!!

Texas is one of those teams that doesn't need to play zone out of necessity against Tennessee because their posts can guard Tennessee's posts 1-on-1. Not like WVU that started a pair of 6'1 posts that needed to double team. Green, Key and KK will have a hard time scoring over Collier or Gaston. They would be playing with fire daring Tennessee to shoot from deep, even if they stunk it up last game. All of the Tennessee backcourt players can hit the three, so why gamble? The only time I'd resort to that is if Tennessee's post are burning up Texas. Otherwise, why risk giving up offensive boards if you don't have to?

I'd have to disagree on the three point shooting ability of the guards. I think you are calling Davis and Burrell guards along with Horston, Walker and Salary? So far they haven't been that good from deep. Hey, I'm just saying of the Texas guards are so weak, they might have to play some zone. Hopefully the shooting picks up.

They haven't, but I said in another post that a team would be INSANE to dare Rennia to shoot. She hasn't shot well in the last year, but everyone knows she can do it. Why give her time to square her shoulders and take her time shooting? Same is true for Rae.

If Texas' posts are able to control the opposing posts, why would the guards risk leaving Tennessee open for three? Especially since the zone will just open up the likelihood that Burrell, Davis or Horston will be charging in to grab an offensive rebound and Texas' gang of 5'7-5'9 guards will be out of position to box them out. They at least have a speed advantage and would be better off playing straight up defense and steering Tennessee towards the Texas shot blockers.

If you look at Davis' career, she is an elite 3pt shooter.

Don't know why I thought she shot a similar percent last year. Not a good start this year either.

Freshman season - 25-76 32.9%
Sophomore season - 34-92 37.0%
Junior season - 35-115 29.6%
Senior season - 1-9 11.9%

Total career - 94-292 32.2%

In my mind, there are several levels of 3 point shooting.

29 or less poor
30-32 meh
33-35 decent
36-39 very good
40-44 excellent
45+ elite

Davis has had elite games for sure. But she had only one very good season.

In the history of basketball ever, who shoots 45+?
There's maybe a tiny handful that shoot 40+?

36% 3pt is equal or better than shooting 54% 2pt.

Our shooting could have been better and if it had, that would have hidden the real disappointment of this game. we lost this game. Because we turned the ball over at critical moments and it prevented us from getting into an offensive rhythm and that stopped us from taking over the game. Turnovers has been our team Achilles heel for like forever. Just saying Go Vols.🍊🍊

You might be mixing up her senior year and high school. She is very coachable but the coach has to know how to handle a player with superstar ability but lacks desire. Key has to start and play if we are talking about a successful season. Salary has to get time as she has control and quickness and can shoot Maybe by tourney she will be able to show what she can do.

Even Tennessee, who has never been known as a big three point shooting programs has several players that shot over 40% for a season.

3P% Player Season
1. .490 Dena Head (25-51) 1990-91
2. .463 Jessie Rennie (25-54) 2019-20
3. .455 Tiffany Woosley (46-101) 1993-94
4. .451 Angie Bjorklund (73-162) 2010-11
5. .450 Kara Lawson (77-171) 2002-03
6. .436 Shanna Zolman (68-156) 2004-05
7. .436 Kara Lawson (79-181) 1999-2000
8. .434 Sidney Spencer (53-122) 2005-06

Disappointed in so many things that cost us this very winnable game. Still disagree with Kellie's reluctance to use time outs.

All that aside, very disappointed that Kellie chose to leave Em on the bench. Unless she's in the disciplinary doghouse, no excuse for not letting her see the floor in front of her home crowd. And not just saying that in hindsight now that we lost anyway, but any player who works hard in practice deserves that one-timr courtesy, similar to starting seniors on tbeir night.

Some bright spots (FT shooting, Burrell's continued improvement, Horston's defense and offense, Green offense), but many of the familiar but infamous old problems still present. Maybe better we lost if it can be used to correct mistakes from both players and coaches.
I agree,Emily should have gotten some minutes!! How embarrassing. Her parents made the trip.Pat would always schedule a game in her players home state, and Play Them!!!!

I agree that she has limitations, but one token appearance per year in a big game is not too much to ask, IMO. The worst that would have happened is that someone might have blamed the OT loss on her getting in the game for a minute.

If this were any other game on the schedule, I'd be more inclined to agree. But this has to be embarrassing in front of friends and family who might not get this opportunity again.
I agree, that's why you start her,get that out of the way.Her playing the first 4-5 minutes would not have hurt this team..

My take on today's game...

Tennessee has yet another gigantic team that will destroy teams on the boards, but get little payoffs because when they do get the o-board, they just fling it towards the basket expecting to get it back and eventually make the putback or get fouled. They are athletes first, basketball players second.

Today is the first time I noticed how big Keyen is. She's huge and takes up a ton of space. Unfortunately, she also looks shorter than 6'1 and I can see her eating a lot of Spaulding burgers against bigger, stronger SEC posts. She was strong and aggressive, but was getting swallowed up inside.

Marta did some good things today. Horston was mostly solid. Interior offense was weak. Both KK and Key missed wide open layups that were momentum killers. Not convinced Walker can play at this level. The less said about Davis today, the better. Burrell put points on the board, but a lot of those 4q drives that led to her personal FT parade could have easily been charges. She was out of control quite a bit and shot poorly.

All in all...this is not a good team. WVU isn't that great of a team and probably a bubble tournament team, but they won despite not playing particularly well. If they can't beat Texas, I think the NCAAT streak will come to an end. Eventually, Kellie has to win a 50-50 game...let alone one against a top 15 team.
Walker has already played at this level!

Beating up on an undersized and underskilled Furman team will provide minimal preparation for Texas, unless Furman happens to have a highly skilled and athletic 6'2/6'5 post combination along with athletic guards.
It's about team chemistry, sharpen up on not making mistakes!! Not nessasary who your playing..practice makes perfect..
