It's devastating but it could have been so much worse without the rain and the hard work of the first responders...it could have literally been leveled
Alright, gang- I just got out of Gatlinburg about 20 minutes ago. Aquarium is safe. Looks like it will stay that way. Park Vista and Arrowmont (short of 3 buildings on the back side of campus that were destroyed) are untouched- I'll attach proof of life. I'm not sure who's putting word out that Ober is a total loss.. it's a total miss. So much so, they eventually opened up to take folks in, which greatly alleviated the number of people we had to try to navigate down Ski mtn road. Chalet Village, however- I'd say is 90-95% gone, once you start up Cliff Branch and beyond. Cobbly Nob has really taken it on the chin, too. I snapped what I could- if I haven't mentioned a particular area, I honestly have no idea what the status is.
Really hope the reports thus far of zero fatalities is accurate. If true, that's seriously a miracle in and of itself.

We did. It helped tremendously. Our first good soaking rain since 07/05.
Things are looking up.
I'm assuming the city is still basically shut down? I have a cabin rented this weekend but I have no idea if it's is intact or not. I don't want to be an ass and keep bugging the rental company. I know they have a lot going on personal and business wise. I do however want to know if we are still expected to come or if we will get reimbursed.
Will this rain not be enough to totally extinguish all the fires?
Rain will definitely help prevent spread. What is already on fire will most likely continue to burn, and can creep. The radiant heat from the edges can dry out unburned fuel in front of it.
For fire to be extinguished, the gallons per minute (of water) must overwhelm the BTUs of the fire.
In other words, big fire needs big water.
Hope that helps explain.

Good luck, but I wouldn't plan on making it. And this is a complete guess of what is about to happen, but after the fires are extinguished, more than likely there will have to be a search for victims/bodies through the debris of the houses, cabins, structures, and even the woods, etc. And someone correct me if I'm wrong, but when the USAR teams go in and search, I think it had to be gone over 3 times for FEMA to say it's been searched/checked off. This is a long way from being over, imo.

Would this be like shutting down Gatlinburg for over a month? wonder how many hotels aren't damaged physically but have severe smoke damage from the wildfire. this will have a major impact for awhile. If lots of those hotels are down for awhile. thats lots of conventions that have to be canceled and everything. wonder if the state will step in with major resources financially for those families who have lost everything

He says see my list and types N.V which has to be Nevada.
Im like you something isn't right here. I have a friend in the Knoxville FBI office I will give a call to tomorrow.
I just read both of the persons' comments below the article and the results of the research y'all did - I agree - something isn't right. I'm glad you have a friend in the FBI office you can report this to.
I haven't had time this morning to dig deeper, but I probably will tonight. That person knows something, I just want to know who that person is. I bet Cindee Mayfield knows who it is...
So a rain this significant will not be enough to totally put the fires out? If so, wow.
