My bad. I was talking about the situation in general.
Kept hearing really strange rumors from people about hushed up body counts, covered up damage, etc. Disturbing how people spread that stuff. Bad enough as it is.
Wbir is riding a camera looks like down 321 East Parkway and the destruction is unreal.
700 structures damaged or destroyed has went to 1000.
The main strip in Gatlinburg they will be trying to open back up for buisness by Wednesday they are hoping.
Edit: Whoever had a cabin rented this weekend and said the company refused a refund the town is closed til atleast Wednesday at the earliest. Really not sure how they could refuse your refund. Care to share the company? Rather not use them when I stay up there 2 or 3 times a year.
Just seen on WBIR some fires have regenerated on the Cobbly Knob area.
Sig, isn't that near you?
It was me. They finally called me Thursday night and told me they would grant my refund. They were extremely difficult through all this but I know they had a lot going on so I tried to be reasonable.
I hate you we're given a hard time over all this. I'm glad you got it resolved. I know my folks company was letting people reschedule, cancel, whatever they needed to do. You guys can't help what happened here.
Wow some out of town woman reporter was being a total horses a** during the press conference.
The Mayor of Sevier Co cut the EMA director off and said "we did all we could when the fire shifted as fast as we could and we dont need some monday morning quarterback that doesnt know this area questioning it."
Yeah I know everyone was going through a lot. I actually never spoke with anyone in Gatlinburg, their parent company is in FL so I always spoke with someone down there. They were a real pain in the a**, but it's all fixed now. Hoping for a quick recovery for the area.
I think that the question she asked was warranted, however not right now. I love the way Mayor Waters handled the question. It was as loaded a question as I've heard. She was trying to get one to blame the other IMO. I think what sent them over the edge was her comment about people losing their lives and nobody losing their lives in North Carolina. Every other media member was pretty respectable and wasn't rude and pushy. There was a petition started online wanting her gone. People from her hometown on Facebook and Twitter both are destroying her for it.
Yea I even said down the road it would be something to look at as far as response but hammering the question over and over now is disrespectful.
They told her text alerts went out to evacuate but some didn't get it because of cell tower damage from fire. Also told her the fire sirens were activated but with 87mph it was hard to hear.
A little common sense will tell you the town did a hell of a job getting the message out and emptying the town and area.
Im sure she, like alot of people not using their heads, are thinking you seen the fire come up to the top of the mountain and start down.
But from eyewitness accounts the wind being that strong was picking up fireballs and raining them down 1 to 2 miles from actual fires and starting instantly where they fell.
Not to mention power lines were also starting them from being down from the wind.
I love how the mayor handled it. I feel it was a loaded question trying to get one to blame the other and they gave her the exact response she didn't want to get. I had no problem with the question being asked but it was her delivery that I didn't like. I also feel it was not the right time.
I can tell you the wind was absolutely roaring here at times and I have no doubt it could have drowned out the sirens. I also look at it like this, I'm not going to trust somebody that isn't looking out my window to tell me I should leave. If I feel I need to leave I'm leaving. I'm in the line of thought like you, I think given the circumstances the town done the best they could with the resources available to them.
The fire that was started in the Cobbly Nob area was from a tree that took down a power line. My father was on the mountain helping get one their cleaning ladies off when the tree hit the line. He said by the time he got off the mountain that as he was leaving and in a matter of 15-20 minutes with the wind it was already out of control.
I think the remark about folks didn't die in North Carolina is what set everybody off. I think most people would have wanted an answer to the question she posed had her delivery been better.
For those wondering there is a press conference on the Reed family
The wife has been identified, no confirmation on the child. Man I was praying for good news.
