Gatlinburg Being Evacuated

There was a soaking rain here in Knoxville all day yesterday. I would imagine that helped tremendously in extinguishing and slowing the spread. Have the fires been pretty much contained?

They said everything in Sevier Co has been except a couple of hot spots.

But, from what I understand the Chimney tops fire is still burning.

That just amazes me that with all this rain that it can keep burning. I couldn't start afire right now with a gallon of gas and a propane torch.

Since it was probably arson, I wonder if the arsonists used a chemical to make it burn differently.

I know people were asking how to donate to a local group, the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church is taking donations.

Holston Conference will also accept financial donations with checks made to “Holston Conference” and “Holston Wildfire #864” on the memo line. Mail to: Holston Conference, P.O. Box 850, Alcoa, TN 37701. Online giving is also possible at Holston.org/wildfires.

Local news said the money raised has climbed to over 300K and lines will stay open until 12am!

The chalet style building with the gift shop and lookout deck as well as any other wooden structures at the top of the Gatlinburg Sky Lift were destroyed. Here are a few pics of before.

I stupidly hadn't even thought about those buildings at the top. I was just thinking of the lift.

Man.

Someone up there tell me all this rain is kicking the poo out of these fires.

There's the update from yesterday. Seems like it's still pretty big considering all the personnel still on sight.

That's unbelievable that all this rain hasn't completely wiped them out. I would have never expected that.

I was talking to a guy up there over the weekend. He explained it like this: "Have you ever burnt a really dry brush pile in the rain? Once it gets hot and gets going, the rain barely touches it, especially if there's wind, right? Well, with the drought, we ended up with a mountain-sized brush pile and its going to take a hell of a lot of rain to put it out."

I have no clue if he's right or not, but it at least made a little sense.

It's definitely helped but man these things were huge. Also as dry as it's been underground is still dry in some cases because roots were burning and everything else. It's crazy.

Yea seen they were literally digging root systems up because they were burning.

Also mentioned the rain and said the heat as it burns will dry out the vegetation allowing it to keep burning but that it has helped.

It's actually raining again here now. Well I should say it was, I haven't been outside in the last few minutes. Ordinarily, I'd be aggravated with it but in this case I've never been so happy to see it.
