Girl Pressures Boyfriend into Suicide

Man that's a stretch IMO.

Of course I've been accused of not having the slightest bit of empathy so I have a hard time holding someone else responsible for anothers suicide.

She spent months pestering a mentally ill teenager into suicide. You don't see how she might have at least a shred of culpability?

A shred, yes. But there is only ever 1 person responsible for suicide.

That's not exactly how the law sees it.

While this is an extreme example, it works: Let's say I tell you that I have your family tied up, and I will kill them unless you kill yourself. If you go through with it in the interest of saving your family then you committed suicide, but I absolutely share responsibility for your death.

For those wondering if a crime was committed:

Experts weigh-in on Michelle Carter manslaughter case - News - southcoasttoday.com - New Bedford, MA

Former DA Walsh said it is "not uncommon" to prosecute on the basis of words, pointing to the government's trials of Mafia kingpins. "Hiring a hitman are all just words," he said.
Still, he would not have prosecuted Roy on a charge of involuntary manslaughter, preferring instead to pursue a charge of accessory before the fact to suicide or aiding and abetting a suicide, which is a crime in Massachusetts, he said.

so maybe involuntary manslaughter isn't the right charge but it appears her actions fit the definition of other crimes in Mass.

That's an extreme example for sure. But still not your fault.

If you really did have the family captive then yes, you would have some responsibility.

So, if I was lying about having your family tied up, but you believed me, then I was just exercising my First Amendment rights and bear no responsibility for your suicide?

Not in my book. I would be 100% responsible for believing you. Not asking for verification or doing anything else other than offing myself.

As big of a piece of garbage this girl is, if she didn't supply him the means, provide him a place or was present, I'd have to vote not guilty.

Does being on the phone with him encouraging him to get back in the truck count as being present? I mean she wasn't physically present but she was on the phone with him apparently while he was committing the act and encouraging him to keep going.

What's the difference between that and actually being physically present and doing the same thing?

That's a fine line for sure, legally they may have her but I don't think I could convict. The guy was an adult wasn't he?

Yuck, dude. Just... yuck.

We need to quit looking to always blame others for our actions. Hell wouldn't his parents share some responsibility?

I really hate to defend this POS girl but dam, how can anyone be talked into or pestered into killing themselves?

If she had done this to a child or someone who is mentally handicapped, that would be criminal in my mind, because they are so vulnerable....he seems legitimately mentally ill.

So should he be treated like a vulnerable class?

He was mentally ill. He was depressed and suicidal, and she exploited his condition. I'm not saying he was incapable of saying "no", but his situation made it difficult. The critical legal question is "would he still be alive if not for her months of badgering?"

I cannot answer that question.

If she did this to a child or someone mentally handicapped, their guardian needs to be held responsible as well for not monitoring.

No, the critical question would be did she know he was officially diagnosed as mentally ill.

Not really. The question of her knowledge, or lack thereof, necessitates the charge of involuntary manslaughter. She shouldn't be badgering someone into suicide whether she knows that he's mentally ill or not. He quite clearly expressed suicidal thoughts to her.

He could have always blocked her number.
