Give the devil his due (Kiffin)

I love the fact that people are arguing the degrees of mediocrity in here. 5-7 and 7-6 are not that different, just two wins a part, and it's no where near elite. Kiffin had things going in the right direction, but he wasn't a long term solution at UT and I think it's entirely possible that we could have struggled going 6-6 this year as well under him, which would have left even his biggest defenders wondering if he was the solution in the beginning. Now, we have Dooley, which has put together arguably the same type of staff as coaches, just unknowns in SEC recruiting right now, save Thompson and Dooley himself. There is no doubt in my mind that UT will be elite once again, but when and with whom that is has yet to be seen. It will never be with Lane Kiffin, period.

Well said there EaZy E. :good!:

7-6 means a bowl game and bowl money. 5-7 means you're home for the holidays.

And they're even more different when 5-7 includes a loss to a team that tied for last place in the Mountain West.

We had NO business in a bowl game last year, as evidence I present the ass whipping that Va. Tech distributed in Atlanta. So, we were a mediocre marginal team that got destroyed in a bowl game. People will still list good and bad things about last season, but overall it was still tough to watch.

That's a joke, right?

If Kiffin coaches USC for 10 years and never wins his conference, I'll put him in the same boat as Fulmer. Of course, he won't be allowed a decade of mediocrity at USC. They actually have standards.
So true. It shouldn't have been allowed here. We would't be having this conversation, the fanbase would be less restless and we wouldn't stink.

Just another reason we should have a new AD at this point.

We upgraded WR and OL coaches. We might have downgraded on RB coach. Other than that, I see them on paper as just as solid.

We had a more proven DL coach, both in coaching and recruiting. Better RB coach and recruiter. A lot better and more proven DC (although I like Wilcox).

So since a 7-5 team lost to the #11 team in the nation (meaning the best team in the nation that wasn't in a BCS bowl), we now didn't belong in a bowl game? We couldn't have beaten Texas A&M like Georgia did or Northwestern like Auburn did? I know you say you changed your mind when Kiffin left, but the way you went from saying we were national championship-bound to now acting like he "wasn't the answer" or "was just mediocre" is still utterly astounding to me.

Not at this level he wasn't.. Now the NFL is different story..

That is interesting ...

What happened to every pro style offense that we played : Alabama , SC , UGA ( bama was shut out of the endzone )

Even though we lost UCLA ...how did the defense perform ? I think UCLA only had 250 yards ...offense was really the sticking point

Florida had their lowest output of the season I believe ...defense on the field the entire game

Auburn - the defense was on the field for 84 snaps because the offense could not sustain a drive ..only 24 points

Or are you basing your conclusion on Ole Miss ..where virtually the entire starting LB core was out , Jackson was out , and Walker was playing hurt ...and the offense could not sustain a drive and they were on the field the entire game . Guess the coach should have an answer for those things .

Seems to me that when the offense controlled the ball for an average amount of time the defense was really good. the number 22 rated D against one of the toughest schedules in the nation . Wilcox will inherit alot of the same issues...I hope you are kinder to him and I hope he gets close to these results

Lincoln was injured. Kiffin made a calculation that didn't work out for him.

and i wonder if maybe, just maybe, his calculation included the thought that if DL misses the kick, the blame will forever be on DL. but if CLK goes for the TD and falls short, he will forever be the goat.

which call would a narcissistic egomaniac punk favor?

Yeah, it has nothing to do with the fact that FGs have a WAY higher success rate than Hail Marys or anything...

not if your kicker has a pulled quad and can't get the ball 7 feet off the ground.

Don't forget the extra 4-5 weeks of extra practice, which is just as, if not more, important than the money and publicity.

It was a terrible bowl draw for Tennessee.

In past years, the SEC team in the position that Tennessee was in goes to the Outback Bowl. I hope you can get off your anti-Kiffin crusade to realize the difference between Northwestern and Virginia Tech.

However, it's not an excuse. Tennessee had weeks to prepare for Virginia Tech and still lost.

The game changed when Moore dropped the deep pass.

Kiffin acted as his own OC more often than not.

You clearly don't get it. Chaney gets all the credit for improving the offense and Crompton, but anytime there was questionable playcalling, that's 100% on Lane Kiffin.

Sure, it is fun to win a bowl game, especially if you travel with the team to see it live. The fact is, unless it is for all the marbles, the results are meaningless. It is nothing more than an extra 15 practices to the outgoing seniors with no real investment in the game. What do you think they would rather be doing on New Year's Eve?

Justin hit the nail on the head.

which one one is 152-52? which one is 12-21?

People forget that Lincoln got off a 47 yarder in the 1st half of the Alabama game that wasn't blocked and missed inches short. It wasn't unreasonable at all for Kiffin to expect him to make one 3 yards shorter.

So if he makes the field goal, monte's kid is a genius and it's not Fulmer's fault?

Because he missed the kick, monte's kid is still a genius and it's Fulmer's fault ?

What does this have to do with Fulmer...Kiffin went with an option that was more likely to win us the game than a Hail Mary against the best defense in the nation...

He missed it twice. He was terrible. Fulmer recruited him. If Michael Palardy absolutely sucks, it's going to be hard to blame Dooley for a game we lose by 2 with three missed field goals.
