I checked with an NCAA compliance officer on our two rules questions.

You are correct a FB or BB(other sports are different) player cannot be on academic scholarship unless essentially they walked into the coaches office the first day of practice, tried out and made the team. Vitually no contact before that time would be permissible.

The question on Memphis of KY being able to put Stokes on a FB scholarship as an EE and play basketball this year cant be done because he didnt play football this year.

When you're using an alloted football scholarship it is for only football that you're a scholarship athlete. You have to walk-on to participate in dual sports in college. Jarnell would be able to walk-on the basketball team for the 2012-2013 season. On the other hand a player who finishes up his eligibility in 1 sport can walk-on to play another sport for 1 season assuming they are enrolled in graduate school.

Secondly, there is 0% chance that Dooley would forfeit a football scholarship that he is using to assemble his 2012 recruiting class.

If actually read what we were talking about you would understand that we in no way ever mentioned using at UT football scholarship.

I was sure about the academic stuff, but not 100% about the FB scholarship stuff. Thought it may work, but looks like you were right..

So who was it worried about Stokes being back page news because of the awesome juco class we were bringing in?

If he does it would still make for a very good week. Biggest instant impact of any recruit we get this year.

The longer it played out the less I liked our chances. I just don't like all the hoopla surrounding this guy. Reminds me of Bryce Brown.

Its not hoopla it is just the time of year and the circumstances combined with a struggling UT Basketball program.....I am not sure where he is going at the moment....I don't think it is KY.....I don't think that FL is the Business decision....If the parents are involved in the decision I think he stays close to home.....I am not sure what kind of influence that CCM has had on him to get him to the Pros....I do think the Harris Tweet has some significance and do believe it will be an SEC school....Throw in the Hope Scholarship thing and that points to TN.....Understand he has a brother here so that is also a factor...IMO

Stokes was worried about it....buisness decision....pick a time that where you can gain the most media attention without spending a buck.....

Don't get me wrong I hope the kid comes and sounds like we have a good chance at landing him. If the kid is as good as advertised and is that big of get then its huge news regardless of what day he declares. It doesn't need the SID or a marketing firm to generate the buzz. It should stand as a coup for Martin without a generated or fluffed up piece.

This would be a hugh catch for CCM....It would tell you from a former NBA player stance what caliber of coach he is and UT has got....If a player and family trust you enough to get you ready for the pros that says a lot about CCM's ability...Family's in this positione eat, drink and crap Basketballs.....It is constant minute by minute thinking.....

It is not just a buisness decison at least he was truthful about it but it was a life decison also.....

I agree with what you are saying here for the real hoops fans but in order to draw in the fringe fans the marketing part is important. Also its important when getting the most buzz out of it in the recruiting circles. For you, I, and the fans that support Tenn basketball no matter what, this would be important on the day our first child was born but We need those fringe fans and future recruits to get excited as well and there in lies the need for maximum publicity.

Its a process, I guess. I just wished I would have saved the papers from when Yarbrough and Hopson signed to see just how big of news it actually was at the time. I seriously cannot remember. I do remember Bruce pimping the Hopson news but I do not think Uncle Jed was all that vocal about Yarbrough.

You have stated the on court product is all the marketing needed. Let me ask you if you agree or disagree with this:

Cal is tweeting for Cat fans to buy the rest of the tks for our home game on Jan 14th. Let's make a big assumption that Stokes is a Vol and for arguments sake that game is his first game wearing Orange. The sports information department should sell that debut of Stokes to the fringe fans to make sure those KY fans can't buy those tks. My stance is getting Stokes front and center is so important for reasons like this.

If we need to 'market' a home game against Kentucky then we are in big trouble. However I do think it plays a part in road games and bruce was very good at it and it seems Cal is trying to do the same. Do you think we would of had all those Bama fans in Neyland back in the 90's?

The fact is we havnt sold any home games out. The fact is Cal is asking his fans to buy up the 4k unsold seats at our home game. The fact is filling empty seats is a problem for the program at our home games. The fact is if Stokes plays here in the spring he will help with our home games. If the sports information department gets the word out like it should it could help a lot.

According to Bruce Pearl this morning the four schools that are in contention, per Stokes' father are Tenn, Arkansas, UF and UConn with UT having a slight lead.
