Interims almost never work out. That would have been a mess.

Their not intended to work out. Would the situation be any worse than it is now? We had a panicking ad that hired a joke of a coach and we made our bed these past three years.

I'm not sure what you mean. I just look to how Ohio State handled their situation, seemed they did okay. Now I'm not saying that we would have gotten Urban Myer, I'm just saying committing to a rush hire which was more of a gamble than anything, was rather foolish.

And this is not a position that I have taken recently, this is something that I always believed since the beginning.

none of that matters. when Dooley was hired, HE WAS THE BEST WE COULD GET... no one else would come.. Will Muschamp said no to 3.5 million..

its fine to hit on his short comings but the bottom line is, what choice was there?? go without a coach..

Been saying this ever since he was hired.. People get all amped up on the "We are Tennessee" thing, that this is a dream job and people should be lining up to come here and coach.......... Well, it WAS NOT a dream job when Dooley was hired.. He has been a highly paid interim coach IMO.. He has cleaned up some messes, taken out some 'trash' and restocked the cupboard fairly well.. It should not be as hard to get that "home run hire" now thanks to Dooley.. Also the points made in the OP were discussed at length when Dooley was hired but not to many were having any of it.. The old spin cycle was working overtime saying Dooley would be our Saban...

They closed the show talking about he was never promoted to be a top coordinator for Saban. He was always tight end or special teams coach. He was Saban's longest tenured assistant an never made it past the assistant level even when there were openings. The reason UT hired DD was he was a Saban disciple. But if he was any good he would have gotten farther. It was just an eye opener. Maybe he isn't that good. He never even coordinated an offense or defense, so he got hired by UT way before he was ready. he was just getting his feet wet at Latech.

That's all we could get,no head coach wanted to come here!!!!!!

I was always under the impression it was because Hamilton was on an accelerated timeline to fill in after Kiffin in order to preserve the recruiting class was the primary factor UT was so unattractive.

Read the Gruden thread?

I've dumped a good amount of information in there. Too damned lengthy to respout it here.

However... I doubt Gruden comes here.

If it's not Gruden who's it going to be, Is it Dooley for one more year? I hope not.

Gruden is nothing more than a pipedream.

If UT takes it's time it will lose out on a chance for Charlie Strong.

My biggest fear is we hire Kirby Smart from Bama. He'd be an upgrade, sure, but I don't think he's the long-term answer.

If you post something on a message board enough times, people will begin to accept it as fact, no matter how silly it is.

Maybe if you post enough people will learn by osmosis that its true. TENNESSEE IS NOT A GREAT JOB UNTIL SOMEONE COMES IN AND WINS...Then it will be considered a good job again. Forget about getting the likes of Gruden and be ready for a younger coach with good pedigree or winning at smaller school.

Just because you love Tennessee Blindly should not make you retarded.

We hired a coach with a 2-30 record agasint winning teams with one winning season ever. He is a stop gap till the next guy, but the next guy could suck to.

Some people in the Charlie Strong thread say strong would be Dooley 2.0. I don't think so. I think that kirby Smart would just be another version of Dooley.

Charie Strong would be an excellent hire actually. He is on pace to run the big east for a few years and get all those bcs games on his resume. louisville in the big east is what ohio st is in the big ten under tressel. If i were Strong I wouldn't come to UT without at least a $4mill 5 year contract with a huge payout. Because i feel if he came he would want to stay and the buyout wouldn't be an issue. He is New age enough and an excellent defensive coach plus he understands the sec and has success in a bcs conference. He has good assistants and access to other coaches like Lou Holtz and urban Meyer. I may hate those guys but that's a good pipeline to be part of.

This is what I am afraid of. Strong has proven over and over what he can do with USC and Fla. In the right plave I really think this man can build a dynast.

Kirby hasn't proven as much yet to me. He would be short term ok but to me he would be looking for the next big opportunity to leave. IMO

If this is true, then wouldn't that fact be a GIGANTIC red flag for the AD? And the fact that Dooley had a losing tenure at LA Tech?

Charlie Strong's largest margin of defeat in his 3 years of coaching at Louisville is 17 and that was to a much better Pitt team.

In fact, it's pretty arguable that most of the teams he lost to (and the ones he has beaten) have better facilities and talent.

The other big thing? The dude can recruit Florida like nobodies business.

I like Strong. I don't like him as much as Gruden but would be ecstatic if he's THCAUTK next year.

I have to disagree. I believe Derek Dooley was hired for the sole reason of his last name being Dooley.
