Has the concept of dressing professional in public service jobs been completely discarded now?

I can't remember the last time I bought a suit. Maybe 20-ish years ago.
I have 2 suits to my name, mainly for weddings/funerals. Hard to imagine a time when men had to wear them daily (some still do I guess). I still think the necktie is the single most pointless garment of clothing ever invented.

Same here, wife won't let me give them to goodwill.
We had a garage sale about 5 years ago, and I put my suits out at $2 each. They fit several people, but most guys said they wouldn't wear a suit any more. I said, "weddings and funerals". One guy relied, "maybe MY wedding and funeral".

I graduated from college Dec, 73. Wore a suit every day to work. I only saw one guy wear a leisure suit(baby blue) one time. They came and went quickly.
I wasn't even born until 80. So I had the kmart suit that would sand your knees down as a kid. But I dodged the leisure suit. I'm in court for work about twice a week these days. I stopped wearing a tie because the judge told me not to bother anymore. The lawyers do it for sure though.

I don't care at all what the person giving food to me is wearing. I only care about the quality of the food and the amount of time it takes to get to me. Customer service in chain restaurants has just gotten dreadful over the last 15-20 years. I don't know, maybe it's always been dreadful, and I didn't really notice it as a kid. I rarely go to fast food restaurants anymore, but whenever I do, my order is always wrong. I get the crispy chicken when I asked for it grilled. I get fries when I ask for onion rings. I get an unsweet tea, when I ask for a sweet tea. "I'm sorry, the ice cream machine is broken." It never fails. Something is always wrong. And the people at the drive in don't even read the order back to you or tell you how much it costs. They just extend their hand, expecting you to put money or a card in it. If you have the nerve to ask them how much the meal costs before paying, lord help you. You get a huge eye roll and sarcastic quote. What a terrible inconvenience for them to have to communicate with you. And now they expect you to tip at places like that. It's shameful.
This is why CFA is killing it

Iā€™d guess they are doing something right in their hiring process also.
IMO, CFA's success all stems from their incredibly selective process of choosing "franchisees" (in quotes because they aren't really franchisees, but that's another conversation).

They pick the right people to run the restaurants, and it all flows from there.

Iā€™d say they mastered all of it. Franchisee selection. Hiring. Training. Iā€™ve wondered if any lower execs have left and used what theyā€™ve learned to start some consulting businesses based on what they have learned there in these areas.

But yes, their franchisee is a different breed. From my understanding it is very hands on in running your restaurant.

My daughter works at ours. She had to do application, couple of interviews, and take a test. We'd tried getting her to go there since she started working, but wanted to be with her friends. It was a transition at first, but she loves it now. They're just more professional than her previous work, but she has really started to love it. Brings home about $800-$900 every two weeks, not bad for a teenager working part time.

Will always, and still wear Jos A Bank and Brooks business casual.

I could afford a nicer cut suit, or, could prob have more, cheaper work outfits. But, I'm not budging.

Employers have pushed us to dress down. (The younger ones do). Now, on certain days. its appropriate. By and large, its collard shirt and slacks day, airday.

I remember Tom Landry wearing a suit on the sideline. I think Ditka dressed semi formal as well.

With suits, it isn't about how expensive the suit is or how nice the material is. It's getting it properly tailored. For most men, just wearing a suit straight off the rack isn't going to look great.

A cheap suit can look nice if it is tailored and fits you well. A $5k suit that doesn't fit well (too bulky/baggy, etc.) will look like crap.

The problem I have with suits is I'm fat.

Any place that can't stay open because they don't have staff is most likely paying terrible wages.

Strongly disagree with this statement. Here in my area we have good factory job paying $22-30 an hour that can't get people to show up or last more than a day. They simply don't wanna work! These same jobs were paying $12-18 pre COVID.

I had to start a thread on this because it's something I've been noticing more and more. I will give two examples that I've experienced recently.

1. My wife and I went to a local ice cream shop the other night. The girl working behind the counter was wearing shorts so small on her, her ass cheeks were hanging out them. She was also wearing a tee shirt that had the logo of the Morton's Salt Company (girl holding the umbrella). Only it said "Don't Be A Salty Bitch". I couldn't help but think, WOW! THIS is considered acceptable attire when you are working with the public? Especially in a place of business where a very large % of your cliental is children!

2. I took my son to Gamestop because he had some birthday money he wanted to spend. The guy behind the counter was wearing a wife beater with a button down shirt unbuttoned, shorts, and flip flops! This is such a far cry from when I was young and this store used to be called Electronics Boutique. The workers back then wore ties and dress pants! Eventually they went to business casual and wore khakis and polos but still. Now the people who work there look homeless!

I realize my evidence is anecdotal but surely I'm not the only one who's experienced it. Has anyone else noticed this with retail/service workers? I'm just wondering, what happened to the standards of professionalism?? Where are the managers of these businesses and why have they allowed it to get to this point?

1. First you chase the illegal immigrants away.

2. Then retailers lower employment standards so that they can find somebody, anybody to keep the store open.

3. Then you get the women with their ass cheeks hanging out.

Not sure how it is elsewhere, but in Nashville it seems that the hourly wages for unskilled labor have settled back to close to what they were pre-COVID. Of course, the only thing I am seeing is the places that have signs up. I understand why people might not want to work for that, particularly with inflation. What I don't understand is how in the hell are these people surviving if they won't work and have no money.

Chased away? šŸ¤£ There's more here than ever, you must not get out much huffy. I'm not saying that in a way like I dislike illegals, but they're everywhere, I have several as friends here in Georgia.

My joke doesn't work because Joe having immigrant friends means nobody ever hatched a plan to run off illegals.
