HBO's "Game of Thrones"

I think an article I read earlier summed up Dany's turn pretty well:

"Remember Dany’s first instinct when Meereen was under bombardment by the slave cities? “I will crucify the masters,” she declared. “I will set their fleets afire. I will kill every last one of their soldiers and return their cities to the dirt. That's my plan.” Tyrion talked her out of it. At the time we thought, Well, she probably didn’t really mean it. But she did. She’s said other things like this too along the way. In season 2 she promised, “We will lay waste to armies and burn cities to the ground.”

There were plenty of moments in previous seasons to support Daenerys going Mad Queen. Has the show been a bit tricky in playing her murderous moments as heroic and only recently seemed to want us to question them? Perhaps. But I wouldn’t say GoT is trying to suddenly push the idea that Dany is bad so much as doing exactly what a good drama does in its final act — putting its protagonist to the ultimate test. And in doing so, what GoT is actually pushing is a debate about Dany’s morality, bringing that question into the foreground after letting it sit in the background for so long.
We think Daenerys is a good person because she’s happily made so many benevolent choices to try and make the world a better place. Those choices tended to be made when Daenerys was feeling calm and secure. When you have two armies and three dragons it’s easy to decide you’re going to banish slavery because you can. But the show has pretty consistently shown that when Daenerys gets really angry she rather nimbly leaps to “kill them all in the most painful way possible” as the best solution regardless of whether it’s justified or not. And she’s never been angrier than she is now.
Since season 7, Dany’s lost two dragons, her two most trusted friends and advisors (Ser Jorah and Missandei), and has gone from ruling a land where she was worshiped to a continent where — as she puts it — nobody loves her. Dany didn’t seem like she needed that big of a push to nuke a city, and the final season has given her a really hard shove.

Now they can add another title to her never ending list..."Burner of hundreds of thousands of innocent children and babies for no damn good reason"
Man, I can't help but feel you're overreacting to a TV show. I get you're unhappy with the story, but the passion that you express it with is borderline crazy. If it gets you this upset, this show cannot be good for your health. And the scary thing is this is all over something imaginary. You must be super intense IRL.

If that is the end? Then yes... I was hoping for something much different. However, how many major characters have we seen climb out of rubble? Arya just did. I don't think Jamie and Cersei are dead (yet).
They’re extremely dead. Sometimes what it looks like is what it is.

Dany going all mad queen isn’t that much a surprise to me. I just feel the writing has dropped off dramatically since they’ve past the books. I mean, like half of the lines from main characters this season have just been copy and pasted from earlier seasons.

The only episode this season that I immediately liked was 804. I’ve liked each of the other episodes more with time and rewatches. I still feel a little let down by the writing. I’ve said this many times, it’s not what is happening, but how we are getting there. I just feel more episodes could’ve greatly enhanced the telling of this final act. It’s been more like a Hollywood Dwayne Johnson action movie than a Christopher Nolan what could happen next thriller.

Yep. Where were:

Bran
Sansa
Bronn
Sam (don't miss him though)
Gendry
Yara
Brienne

All suspiciously missing entirely from this episode.

Also missing from the trailer from the final episode:

Davos Seaworth
Jon Snow
They are in the very first shot walking through the rumble and smoke. Had to rewatch the preview and pause to catch em, but they’re there!

Also, from the last shot of the 806 preview, sure looks like Dany was the bringer of Winter. Maybe a “nuclear” winter? KL covered in ashes. 74343FF7-B624-4DA4-A5EA-0DEA665DEDE1.jpeg

Agree, there is no legitimate reason for why these last two seasons needed to be shortened. They could have benefited immensely from the time to set up the turns we have seen.

I have slept on it, and I thing it was obviously rushed, but GRRM probably heading toward this ending but in a more fullfilling way-- just needed 13 seasons, as he said. (If that statement was true)

I know Dany has always danced with the dark side, but this episode showed how important Jorah was in her rise to power. He seemed to always be able to keep some of her worst impulses at bay. Now that he is gone, along with Misandie, Danny doesn't really have anyone left to temper her Targ tendencies. So we finally see her break and commit genocide.
Bingo. What finally pushed her over in the end was that’s all those she trusted either betrayed her or were gone. The last straw was Jon. Her line I guess it’s fear was classic. She started turning the minute she Landed in “the west”. She burned poor old Dickon and giant dad. THe reason it appeared so fast is because the actors and writers wanted to move on. I blame them for not having a full season. Great episode IMO

I would really like some numbers on how much of the vitriol directed at this last season specifically is from people that have also read the books. I'm guessing it's a lot if not a large majority.

Jaime/Cersei was horrendously done. Jesus, if GRMM had that ending planned for their stories, dude has lost his damn mind. That was complete TRASH. I am literally embarrassed with how awful that was. Everything else I thought made sense and was done well besides it obviously being rushed. Dany was always going to turn bad, its been foreshadowed so many times.

Oh come on..don't do that bullcrap. I hate this direction, and I am aggravated that I wasted sooooo much time on this horrible horror freak show. There are good things in the world too, but this crapfest is a ugly, joyless and loveless..oh wait that is not really true..love and kindness are in the world, but they are just a weakness to be either zombified or burned alive..

To each his/her own, but I didn't think it was THAT bad. Unfortunately most long running successful shows end up with disappointing endings. I think if they had another season or two, the writers could have made this end better. JMO

I think most of us agree this season feels rushed and we're not getting the same quality of storytelling, but it's been more than two episodes. It really ramped up when she needlessly burnt the Tarleys, and when Viserion was killed.
Oh I agree... Was taking about it last week... All her closest advisors now gone, the two that are left one is conspiring behind her back and she didn't fully trust the other... The man in her life is turning her away...

It was mad queen on warp drive.

The seeds were planted along the way, throughout the show, sure. Just hated the rushed nature this felt like.

I've no problem with the story line tho. Just the execution of it these past couple episodes
