Heath Shuler vs. Peyton Manning

I watched Johnny Majors and every QB since. Peyton is far and away the most successful and studied, not to mention just plain entertaining. I saw Heath, too. He was great and I loved his magic, but I think he had leadership issues in the NFL that did not exist in college. Majors was a Heisman runner up and he was a terrific QB for his day. Dewey Warren vs Gary Beban (UCLA) is the best single game a QB ever played at UT, Condredge Holloway, Jimmie Streeter, and Tony Robinson all had Pro written all over them in college. Kelly? He just had great receivers, and if Peyton had had some of those guys, Florida games would have been different.
The most raw talent I ever saw in a QB playing at UT was Robinson. That guy was incredible. What a waste.
Peyton is the MAN. Notice I left anybody named Clawson or Ainge off my list.

Peyton had a terrible O-line in '96 and no running game to speak of. The running game was still non existent in '97 until the UGA game.

The other three are, with Peyton at the top because he is and always was just a better quarterback than they were IMO.

Peyton is also our only QB to win the Johnny Unitas Award, the Davey O'Brien Award, and the Maxwell Award. I just don't see how you can pick against the guy.

No question that Manning is the best passer that has come through UT. But in the college game, I'll take a quarterback who was 85-90 percent the passer that Manning was (in college) and can run too. Robinson could do everything.

I saw Heath, too. He was great and I loved his magic, but I think he had leadership issues in the NFL that did not exist in college.
That's why I specifically mentioned college. We're not talking about the pros. I thought Heath Shuler was an awesome QB who could hurt with his arm and with his legs way more than Peyton. Both great, but I'll take #21 in the college game.

And Peyton, for all his talent, struggled to win the big ones.

heath did beat florida. both were great. for me it's a hard choice. heath will be president one day, however. he's the most conservative democrat that i have ever witnessed. he will get some votes from both parties. this will happened if the washington insiders that hate him do not destroy him first.

What! Heath went to a vet Redskin team that just won a superbowl a few years prior, those vets were ticked because he got a nasty big signing bonus & contract that they wanted, but the rookie got. The "leadership issues" was that they were mad that he got their contract! Mike D at the Saints was a hot head with a worse team and nobody there to support him as well. You take the best QB's & take away their supporting casts & they are not so great, but just an average NFL QB that sticks around for a while, being bounced from team to team. Jeff Garcia is a good example: San Fran- good with cast; Lions-bad, no cast; Eagles- (no chance to play again until DM got hurt)good w. cast as a backup; TB- good w. cast
Listen, all these QB's are great, but Heath is by far a close second to PM & had all the great stuff he did and maybe more. Put PM on that Redskins team with that situation & we would not have seen PM do what he has done.

His lengthy holdout also played a role in this and made him no friends as a rookie.

this may be the funniest post that i have ever read on volnation. save this crap for catspause.

This is off topic, but Couch was the best QB in the country coming out as a junior. He began the process of making Kentucky respectable on the college football scene. As a matter of fact, Tennessee and Ohio State were chomping at the bit to get him. He just decided to stay home.

He chose...poorly

Maybe this country needs a solid conservative democrat. Someone who can be for the working man without living in the far left Land of Oz.

Shuler would have my support. Especially if he continues introducing bills like the Save Act.

Couch was good, but I doubt the Eagles have lost much sleep over the fact that they had to settle for Donovan McNabb at #2.

Probably not, but it would have been nice to see Tim go into the NFL in a better situation than an expansion team. He had some success, but had little by way of weapons and less by way of protection. He simply got beat down in Cleveland, both physically and mentally, and it led to his demise, IMO.

Wasn't there talk of him (Couch) transferring at one point?
Yes. Serious talk. One of the most highly touted QB in the country, and Bill Curry wants to run the option with him! Gives him his first start in the Swamp. Curry was an idiot. Had he not got fired, Couch was all but gone.

Rarely have I felt as sorry for a QB as I did when I watched Bill Curry make Tim Couch run the option.

I remember that now... there was talk about him possiblt coming to UT, but then Curry was fired.

That'll be a good reference to use when people come down on Fulmer. Fans may or may not disagree with Coach Fulmer's decisions, but until you've had a Bill Curry, put a lid on it! :)

As bad as Curry was, he didn't try a fake with the punter trying to run on 4th and forever. Good ol Hal. I never saw so many people at a game wonder aloud about the opposition's call.

Should we feel sorry for you guys?

we've had Wade Houston, Jerry Green and Buzz Peterson, almost back-to-back-to-back Jack. We have every right to question our coaches and those who hire them.

Nope. It's getting better all the time in Lexington. Hell, we beat the eventual national champs last year. Sure would like to beat y'all again though. Needless to say, we're due.
