Holy Crap -- basketball penalties

Who wants to bet about the NCAA penalties?

None for football, and no major ones for basketball.

No school in basketball history has ever tried to be this drastic in their self imposed financial sanctions.

Wish he had come clean about the extra texting, would be lots smaller penalties from the NCAA if self reported than what he is going through now.

I'm thinking the same thing.. We will be punished, but I don't think it's going to be as bad as everybody is expecting.

so, we slam our own crank in the door and it feels better that nobody else is going to slam the door?

Don't know on football. The burner phones were Orgeron's MO.

Blatant lying is a problem, always.

The good news about this? This just puts a couple steps closer to firing Mike Hamilton.

Look, I'm not sure what card you're trying to pull here, but I in no way see anything anti-semitic. People are bashing him because he lied to the NCAA which is ironically hypocritical since he turned in a rival program for cheating 20 years ago. Where do you see anti-semitism?

Hypocritical? You're criticizing Coach Pearl for lying when I'm sure you've lied many times throughout your life. We all have, so get off your soapbox.

I don't buy the "other coaches can use this against him" crap. It was additional phone calls and there isn't a competitor of ours out there who hasn't been there.
Agreed, but if they are throwing out that he is a liar, fake, etc. now they have proof to back up their claims. Lying to the 'AA was stupid and I think it could be used against him in recruiting.

lying and lying to your governing body are two entirely different animals. Not justifying either, but they are different.

That said, I don't want to vilify our coach over this. Not a huge deal, but it certainly isn't going to help matters for our athletic department.

No one has ever had this happen. It had only been discussed as a possible avenue...

Basically Hamilton seized upon a discussed but never tried route of beating your own coach and staff with a hammer financially and in recruiting for the small advantage they took with extra texts to seek to get
1. The faster of the NCAA resolutions and
2. No additional severe penalties.

He lied to the NCAA. They haven't completed their investigation yet. You lie to the NCAA, they will burn you. Dez Bryant, USC, etc. You don't lie to the NCAA.

I'm sure it's just because Pearl and Hamilton feel really, really bad. There wasn't any proof of anything; Pearl just gave away all that money because he couldn't live with the guilt.

I'm not as worried about football right now, if it was huge then why isn't there going to be a press conference?

Now they did say that there might be unethical conduct charges against our B-ball program.

Not good.

I'm thinking that maybe we need a new AD.

Here is the bottom line,
the guy talking about Ramar Smith was right, that was the worst thing that has happened since Pearl came. A guy who sold drugs through high school and had probably already shot his first person to death, comes down from Michigan and ends up taking himself down and ruining Tyler Smith's future probably as well.

Pearl does not pay players (which hurt us with Selby's Mom and Tyler's dad)
but he did text too much.

Those who act shocked should realize that under the coach that preceded him, an assistant coach was selling crack.

Anybody else think the harsh penalties are a smokescreen to avoid future problems for football. Show that there is institutional control by taking it out on the basketball program

nobody's acting shocked and we all recognized that the previous staff was a problem. That's why we have this staff.

.

Not yet.

yeah we're at rock bottom. Give me a break

Yeah, it's not like we are on our 3rd football coach in 3 years, our baseball team has no hope, and our basketball program just got hit hard because of violations, not too mention the NCAA is investigating the football program also...Yup, we are good to go.
