He's ok to me. Great interviewer and much better as a basketball commentator. But he needs a good color guy to balance him out as he can be an emotional statue at time. He has one in basketball, but not in football imo.

I think fans just want a little more homerism in his calls. Sometimes he sounds almost as excited in his playcall for the opposing team.

I’ve met Kesling and he seems like a very nice guy. He can be a little anemic. Not the most inventive either (I absolutely loathe the phrase “picking his way”). I hope we can do better when he retires, but he has class at the very least, in stark contrast to, say, Georgia’s radio guys, who are unprofessional, insufferable homers. Kesling is also a VFL. Not many people left associated with the program who were coached by Neyland himself.

Based on the comments I see on this form, I'm about to lose my VN card...

I don't understand the hate directed at Kesling. I think he calls a good game and I like Pat adding color in the booth.

I heard a compilation of TD calls from the AL game. His calls were clear and I heard excitement. I'm a fan.

Go VOLS!
Boring! Plain and simple.

He didn’t show up excitement when we beat Alabama after 15 years.

Yep. It would suck to have to follow Ward. Some will never be satisfied with the job you do.
So, because Kesling is no Ward, then no one else could do better than Kesling? Got it. Give him guaranteed job protection for life. And don't allow any reviews of his actual job performance.

Make a point to listen to other radio broadcasts and you'll see how bad Kesling is.

The biggest issue I have is if you are listening to him calling a game but not also watching you are lost. He is not detailed at all about what is happening. It's basically handoff Small and then eventually says it 2nd and 5.

Hate AL (old and new). Hate GA (old and new). Would prefer to have Vol NW and Bob/Pat over them. Can't think of any others I've listened to except Wichita State back in the day and he was very good (Mike Kennedy). Similar to Bob (not a screamer). 😀

Give me some sample active teams/announcers you think are great and I'll give a listen.

Honestly, I think we're talking difference in styles.

I like Bob, but Bob isn't great at the job. He had an impossible task following John Ward, but at this point, I shouldn't have to wait 7 minutes to find out how much time is left on the field or where a team is on the field. I don't think he deserves as much grief as he gets, but it's tough listening when I can't watch, screaming out for details and not getting them.

I can't see into the man's heart but I think you're wrong about Kesling. He's a VFL and loves the program.
Agree, the implication he sees it is just a paycheck is dumb. It's not fair nor accurate. Criticize the job he does all you want, but his roots with this program are very, very deep. He cares deeply. He walked on the football team in 1972 and has been associated in some way since then. I'd say he cares. He isn't great but he isn't horrible. He doesn't manufacture emotion like the Titans guy.

Because he's not particularly good at his job and Tennessee deserves a better audio representative of the action on the field. Tennessee is working to turn this back into an elite football program. It's time our radio announcing becomes elite again too. We're ready for some new blood on the radio!
I like Bob as well and I better at his job than you are at yours

I totally agree with you and feel Bobs blood runs orange. I never said otherwise.

Meh, not really, just doesn’t have the same emotion as Ward. Ward loved the team, Bob loves the paycheck from the team.
