If the SEC expands to 16 teams

It is all about the $ $. If ESPN wants an annual match up between two rival teams, then it will likely happen.

When the next two teams are added, look for them to be from a large t.v. market. Houston, St. Louis area, Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta, D.C. area, Raleigh/Durham area....

Decisions are not based on logic but are based on bringing more revenue in to the S.E.C.
Should West Virginia, Clemson, Southen Miss, Marshall etc. are added to the S.E.C., they can't add any more revenue but certain other ones can...

The conference already pretty much owns Atlanta without actually having a team in the city...there's no reason to add another one from that market

There is no question Indiana is more basketball oriented (that is part of the appeal of my suggestion). I still think the sibling rivalry angle is there where football is concerned. I may be saying indiana but I am focusing squarely on ND while I speak. You don't think they would get nervous with the sec planting a flag in their home state?

Nope, don't think so; mainly because their market is so much bigger than that state alone.

And having a sister who goes there (IU), I have to disagree on the idea of a sibling rivalry being present there in football

(if anyone would have same-state sibling rivalry with them in football, wouldn't it probably be a team who plays them, like Purdue, anyways?)

i think ND couldn't care less about the SEC or the B1G being in their backyard. they are ND and that's good enough...

they pretty much made it known to the latter by spurning attempt after attempt at getting them to join the league, first by trying out the Big East for size, then by selecting an open relationship with the ACC...

ND thinks that their shize don't stink and that any conference would be blessed to have any of its sports, much less football.

i hope Bama clocks them in the BCS Championship Game...

IU - PU is a much bigger rivalry in Indiana than IU - ND... And I know because I have family there...

ND is like the spoiled rich little brat no one likes...

Even down south, we love to hate ND...

I agree. If ND can recruit a MORMON from Hawaii to play for them, they can recruit just about anywhere... If there was a human colony on the moon, I wouldn't be surprised if ND had a player from there on its football team...

Family in these areas is irrelevant. Understanding sibling rivalries is relevant. These rivalries have a tendancy to result in boundaries that the individuals will not cross unless manuvered into doing so. When those boundaries are crossed then the rivalry heats up. You may have family in these areas but I have been locked in a sibling rivarly with my big brother for fourty years or more. If the sec arrives on the scene in Indiana you will see a rivalry heat up. It is nearly inevitable.

part of that, i believe but am not certain (someone might have to verify), was that the Big 10 demanded the first go round (when the conference added PSU) that they give up some things, I think their NBC deal (as well as some other things/rights)...something that, whatever happened, left a lot of bad blood between the Big 10 office and ND from there on out

Of course their market size does include the likes of Chicago, Indianapolis, they're the only ones that can even get into New York City...and spreads nationally

they do act like a big deal (oftentimes too much of one/ much more of one than they should/ unwarrantedly)...but at the same time, it's not like they don't at least own one the largest markets among all the schools either

(sorry don't want to make it seem like "I love Notre Dame" or anything either)

If that's your view on how it works, I'm surprised you haven't been pushing for NC State

(but I don't think they're exactly the same thing as they are in real life; the best one to talk about how sibling rivalry / "big brother / little brother" works in a college (football) might even be DCgator since he's an A&M fan)

(nothing negative to A&M)

and they own their own network, NBC... aka Notre Dame Broadcasting Corporation...

even when ND stunk, we had to watch their crappy games on TV, until the SEC got their deal with CBS and then ESPN (finally)...

Well, most good ideas are developed. I think it is worth some thought.

:lolabove: Very original...:p

But I for one will be rooting for them, and all the SEC teams... Not the most popular stance on volnation i realize but then again, they are not our biggest rival.

yeah world of difference between how UF sees Bama and how UT does...especially considering what the win does for one (who's successful at the moment) vs the other (who's not)

Yikes, this thread again, including the pod people.

--not that it's a bad topic! I just thought that we beat this to death last year, but then that's never stopped VN before. :)

My presence on this board is sporadic and I have not participated in this discussion on this board before.

It might be worth reviving the old thread. There were forty-'leven proposed conference maps and diagrams and crazed scribbles and near-legendary rants about Virginia Tech and WVU and let's kick Vandy out. Great times.

eta --might have been on the NCAA forum, but they don't get near the traffic as here.

I hate the idea of adding more teams. Kinda makes the conference lose it's mystique a little. A&M plays some solid ball but having Missouri in the conference is a little weird even if they did beat us.

The SEC is the only conference that is not a joke. All the conference re-alignment is to try to catch up to the SEC. The SEC does not have to do anything. The last thing they should do is add more teams that don't fit like Mizzou.

There would be many ways to keep the game.
My suggestion: Four 4-team pods. Two pods per division. Rotate the pods every two years. One permanent opponent from another pod (Bama). One secondary opponent from another pod to play when the permanent opponent's pod rotates into your division. You play four teams every year (the other three teams in your pod and your permanent opponent). You play the secondary opponent four times every six years and everyone else twice each every six years.

Just do away with the cupcakes, BCS. Have 4-4 team subdivisions, each subdivision has a champion, have divisional game, then SEC CG game... if you do away with cupcakes, 9 game SEC schedule and 2 game Non-Conf, you have 11 games, 12 with Divisional, 13 with SEC CG, then have 4 team playoff for BCS as it stands, but with only conference champions... so same number of games, better format?
