iPhone

is that a "new" phone for 199.99?

also u are lucky to live in an area that has an apple store, as well have time to devote to going there.

79.99 is great for a brand new oob iphone

And yeah, I guess I'm lucky there's an Apple Store nearby. I don't know what you mean by having time to devote to going there. You make an appointment and walk right in. I have went on my lunch break and made it back within the hour.

I looked into AppleCare and it seems like an absolute rip off. It does extend the warranty to 2 years, which I guess is nice. Although, I had a used 3 and a used 3gs and never had a single problem with them for years. I've only had trouble with my 4s so I have had to use that warranty twice already.

But the price of AppleCare for Iphone 4s is $99 and if I break the phone (which I did) I'd have to pay $79 for a new one. I went to the store yesterday (w/o AppleCare) and they offered me a new phone for $199.

So if I had AppleCare it would have saved me $20. But if nothing would have happened to my phone, I'd be out $99. So all applecare really does is gets you to pay 1/2 price of a phone (that you may or may not need) upfront and then they charge you the 2nd 1/2 when you do break it but throw in a $20 discount.

That's pretty much how insurance works. You pay a premium in case something does happen. If for some reason it breaks you pay a deductible for service.

That's a heck of a lot quicker than going I to a verizon store. Might as well block out an entire afternoon for that.

Dude, that is a rip off.

In this case, the premium + the deductible is almost the same price as the replacement.

apple care + deductible = $178 (99 for ac, 79 for replacement)

new phone = $199

Now, if nothing happens, you still spend the original 99 for apple care. If you do break your phone, you still pay almost the same cost.

It would be like buying a $200k house with cash and buying insurance with a one time payment of $99k. But if your house burns down, you pay an additional $80k to have it rebuilt.

That's not how insurance works. It's how suckers part ways with their money.

Um you're forgetting a huge variable here. New phone= $199 WHEN YOU HAVE AN AVAILABLE UPGRADE.

Once you use your upgrade a new phone is $599. Not $199.

That's why it's not a bad deal.

I don't have an available upgrade. The guys at apple are cutting me a break by offering me a phone at $199. But I am 14 months from having an upgrade.

It's a 16g 4s.

I've been on iOS 7 since beta 6 and like it very much. That being said, I'll be ready for the JB anytime it's ready so I can get Zeppelin, unlimited Pandora skips and a few other things.

Exactly. Plus you only pay the deductible when you are the reason it broke (cracked screen, water damage, and such). You don't pay if it's a manufacturer problem.

I had an iPAD 2 replaced with AppleCare because it kept crashing back to the Apple logo. Did it over the phone. They sent me a new one, I sent them the faulty one. Paid nothing.

It was worth the $99 to me.

That should be covered with standard warranty unless you had it over a year.

Ok, I'm going to try and explain this one last time.

I have a 16gig 4s. I got it for $99 last November. I broke it last week. If I had applecare, the cost to replace it is $178. Since I don't have applecare, the cost is $199. I do not have an upgrade. Apple is selling me a new phone for $199. So if I had applecare, it would have saved me $20. I'm sorry but $20 is not worth putting up $99 that I know I'll never see again.

That is a rip off.

Iphone comes with a 1 year warranty. Applecare extends it to 2 years, which is the best part of the deal.

You are getting an iPhone for $199 (likely a refurb) because they guy is cutting you a break, so normally it would be $500 plus for new phone while still in contract, so saying it is a ripoff is misleading since most everyone in your situation would be up ****'s creek. Consider yourself lucky.

BTW...by getting an iphone for $199, are you having to extend your contract?

Obviously if you buy an outdated phone with a reduced price AppleCare may not be a wise investment. If you have the newest phone, a MacBook, or an iPad it could be worth every penny.

Yep. I actually called in the warranty with 2 days left in the year. We tried some restore options first to make sure it wasn't just a software problem. I ended up purchasing AC on the last day of the 1st year warranty. Then got it replaced a couple of months later when it kept doing it.

No, I am not extending my contract. The Apple Store made me the offer. At AT&T it was gonna be substantially more. The guy at AT&T told me I should run back to Apple and take them up on the deal.

The genius guy acted like it was standard procedure. It could be because I have a 4s and not a 5, 5s or 5c. And maybe if I had the latest and greatest, it would be a good deal. I never have the latest and greatest and I had an iphone for years and never damaged one (until now).

I still feel confident that with $200 or close to it, I could find a good enough replacement phone without risking the $99.

The difference in $178 - $199 is not enough to warrant buying applecare for $99.

Now, maybe I overstepped my bounds by saying its a ripoff, because had this happened last December, I'd probably be in a different situation.

But still, I'd rather buy a LifeProof case for $70 than buy the AppleCare for $99. Also, there are lots of options to repair your phone now. There's 2 stores in the mall, idropped on Kingston Pike, etc. I even have a friend who bought a little tool kit and likes to fix phones for fun and just buys parts over the internet.

I'm actually surprised they are selling you one for $199.

Yeah, he said new phone. Who said anything about 79.99 for a brand new iphone?

That is the price for a new phone if you break your iphone and you have applecare. However, that is after purchasing applecare for $99 when you initially get your phone.

From what I can tell, $199 for a new phone is the best I'm going to be able to do since I'm 14 months away from a new contract. I'd really like to find a family member or friend who is upgrading to the 5s and willing to sell me theirs but I haven't found it yet.

When I bought my iPhone 5 last year, the full retail price of the phone if you didn't have an upgrade to use was $799 IIRC. Given that I have just the one line on my account and knowing that I'd be on the hook for that much to replace my phone if I were to break it over the two years till I got another upgrade, $99 upfront for AppleCare plus a $50 deductible seemed like a relative steal. Two years provides A LOT of opportunities for something unfortunate to happen to a phone.

Also, as an added bonus, since I live just about 15 minutes from West Town, if anything ever happens, I will likely be able to get my phone replaced within a matter of HOURS, as opposed to the more expensive, outsourced warranty that AT&T offers me that would have me waiting DAYS for a new phone to arrive in the mail
