Is Hopson gone.....

People who are paid to formulate opinions about such things opine that he might be the best athlete in the draft. Couple that with the fact that he can shoot, and I think he'll be just fine.

who said he was the best athlete in the draft? hes wasnt even the best athlete on the team

He may not be a world beater but he could most certainly be a solid role player. 6'7" is great size for a 2 or 3 in the league.

so......any sizeable player could make it in the NBA as a role player? talent has no bearing?

Our fans are awfully hard on our only 1st team all SEC player that avg 19 ppg and shot 40% from three during SEC play. Yes he needs some work on ball handling but he did alot of great things for the Vols this yr.

maybe that's a testament to the talent level in the SEC this year

So Scotty has no talent now? Gotcha.

I can see this place will be nothing but butthurt if Scotty actually declares and leaves.

Hopson's draft status is as high as it will ever be right now. His choice is to jump or stay and learn a completely new system, just when he finally seemed to get the hang of the old system. I think he is gone and Harris as well. In any case there is little guess work now days about the status by the time the decision must be made. They will not need to jump blindly. Hopson can play if you can get him the ball in motion. Give it to him posted and he is a deer in the headlights.

Let me know how you formulated this brilliant nugget?

I think that it could be Scotty's best opportunity depending on how top prospects react to a potential lockout. If a lot of guys don't want to come out and risk sitting for a while to start their careers, it may encourage lower-rated prospects who just want to get drafted and can't really afford to hold out for a perfect situation to go ahead and declare.

That would hypothetically make this year's draft thin, with probably a lot of marginal guys getting picked in the second half of the first round. Then next year's draft would get an influx of guys that would have gone this year, making it tougher for an average late-first guy to get picked. That's assuming the new CBA wouldn't change eligibility for the draft, so there could be other factors yet to be determined.

He reached his peak performance level and his upside playing one more year is not that high. I thought he had a pretty good season overall and I doubt he can duplicate it while learning a new system.

I'll eat fecal matter if Scotty Hopson is playing in the NBA in three years. Not filling out a bench, but playing.

NBADraft.net lists Scotty as the last pick of the 2nd round...

They have Tobias up to 20.

I hate to say this, because I really like Tobias a lot, but it's hard for me to see him ever being anything special in the NBA just because of his build and style of his game.

He isn't real long by NBA standards, and he has an okay jumper right now. Obviously, if he makes a 17 (edit) foot jumper automatic, then all bets are off, but you can say that about anyone in the NBA.

The one thing about him is that he can run and he has unbelievable work ethic, so if anyone can work themselves into a significant contributor on an NBA roster, it's him.

If I were betting, though, I'd say he will be a career 6th man after seeing him play for one year in college. And yes, I know it's one year of college play, but critiquing him is no different than critiquing anybody coming out of college.

As for Hopson, yeah good luck ever playing anywhere other than an NBA practice unless you are in an overseas professional league. Chris Lofton has a better chance of playing on an NBA roster than Hopson does.

nothing more than an eyeball test here, but it seems both of these guys could improve their stock with another year.

Scotty - ball handling, more consistent shot, toughness
Tobias - quicker release on jump shot, more muscle and better post D.

I agree on Tobias and add defense to that. Tobias really should come back I can see him improving from late first round or early second round to a lottery pick with another year or two in college. As far as Scotty I don't see him improving with another year at this point. That said I also find it extremely hard to believe he would go any higher then third round if at all. Scotty doesn't handle the ball well, , doesn't shoot the 3 well, can't post up, completely disappears late in games, acts like a baby and pouts during games. With his skill set he would need to be tough as nails to make it in the NBA and he's not.

Not trying to be a jerk, but there is no 3rd round in the NBA draft.

I am not sure how you dont see the areas of his game that he can make vast improvement in with another year in college. You guys are making way too much of this 'he is going to have to learn a new system' crap. Its not football. Learning a new system is not going to prevent him from improving the areas of his game that very weak compared to NBA standards. He could improve his skills and draft status significantly by staying another year.

No he doesn't and it's not even close

We'll see. Hopson has all the ability, but just doesn't seem to care (it doesn't show up in his play on the court). Lofton always overachieves, and can shoot lights out. Never said Lofton would be a major player, but could certainly fill a role similar to Steve Kerr.

Only time will tell.

all his coaches say he shows a willingness in practice to work on things and improve. I suppose they don't know what they are talking about though.

It is likely Lofton will never see the active side of an NBA roster. He is already two years removed from college and there are guys bigger and faster than him coming into the league all the time. He will NEVER be in the same role as Kerr. Heck, man, Kerr got a lot of PT on a championship team. I love Lofton and wish him the best, but he isn't going to be any kind of contributor in the NBA. There is no position for him
