James Franklin is supposedly....

The guy has only beat 4 teams with a winning record, and only 1 ranked team. He has benefitted from a cupcake schedule and a down Sec east. Franklin is a joke, check the stats.

Obviously we can't beat him. Hate to say that but I hope he goes to PSU so we can get back to dominating the black and gold again. A new coach will have trouble bringing in good recruits to Vandy.

Yeah we can't beat him; that's why Dooley beat him his first year, Franklin whips a lame duck Dooley team his next year, and barely beats us with our backup freshman QB.

You guy are ridiculous in how much you're scared of him. Absolutely ridiculous.

and his recruiting is being done without the restrictions previous Vandy coaches dealt with. Finishing 9th or 10th in the conf is not elite

The fact that posters on our board are asking which recruits we can flip if Franklin leaves says plenty about his ability to recruit. In a state with way below average talent and tough academic admission restrictions, I'd say he's doing ok.

Do people not understand the concept of relativity? Top 30 classes at Vandy is beyond good, it's great, given what he has to work with and what he has to sell. You're also disregarding his top 20 class last year.

When given better resources and a better product to sell Franklin could become elite. Vandy's classes can't be compared straight up to any of the major SEC program's because they're not on an equal playing field.

Your point is my point. Relative to what Vandy has always been he's done a great job. He's won games that most other Vandy coaches have not been able to win. Rather than finish in the top 60 in recruiting, he's finishing in the top 25-35. I've said in numerous posts he's a very good coach who's done a fantastic job. Kudos.

But it doesn't stack up to other top programs and it shows....he hasn't beaten any other top programs.

I believe Franklin is a very good coach, has done a great job at Vandy and would do a great job at a place like Penn State or Texas. We'll probably see soon enough. But to call him a great coach while ignoring how he's gotten to a 24-15 record during his 3 years at Vandy is being willfully naive IMO.

Again, 5 of his wins this year came vs teams with a combined 9-51 record. He beat a hidtorically bad 4-8 Florida team absolutely decimated by injuries. He was completely blown out vs 2 of the 3 Top 25 teams he played (TAM & Mizzou) and was down 28-0 vs the 3rd (SCar) before they let off the gas.

Balderdash! Hope he stays at vandie so Vols have pleasure of wiping the field with commode-doors, starting next November in their own Nashville landfill. GBO!

are you seriously claiming that every question asked on VN is now instantly valid and proves a legit point?

his academic restrictions are no longer that tough

I don't remember those kind of questions being asked during the Bobby Johnson era.

It is kind of pathetic that people want him to leave Vandy so Tn can go back to beating them. He beat a lame duck UGA team that was on its way out of the top 25 and other than that he has beat nobody. I could careless if he leaves or stay. He does not own Tn and beating a team that quit and beating a team that struggled all year on off. and especially on def. is not a big accomplishment.

VN wasn't as big either and Johnson had to work with real students

but are you seriously stating that every question asked on VN is a valid one worthy of legit discussion? Or do you happen to be cherry-picking to back your agenda?

This. KBVol, I've been making this point with you for some time now. He's done a wonderful job, but has benefitted from some very fortunate circumstances (scheduling, cycles) and within those fortunate circumstances, has been very fortunate a few times (see Wake Forest game this season). By the way, if he is such an amazing coach, why did he struggle to beat a terrible Wake Forest team at home, and why was he not remotely competitive vs. the better teams he played this season, getting blown out by Mizzou and TAM??? Let's not forget his losses in key games to Northwestern and Ole Miss. He may be a great coach, but if UT, UF, and UGA weren't 5, 7, and 8 loss teams this year he'd be just another Vandy coach by his record.

Who recruited Jordan Matthews? It would have been nice to see him in orange. I think you always look for opportunities to land recruits and should ask the question when you see an opening. With that being said, does Vandy have any commits that would be a take for us? Maybe Sawyers at DT?

No, not every question posed on VN is valid or worthy of discussion as evidenced by the questions you asked in your post.

oh you got me there

but why is the questions about Vandy recruits (which is asked about every school and every transfer) valid yet others are not? How many Vandy recruits would even be a take for UT?

But how many teams was Vandy beating before he coached there? I understand that vol fans hate the guy, but it is stupid to think he is a bad coach. He has done great things at a school not known for talent or any tradition of winning. First back to back 9 win seasons, and the most bowl games of any Vandy coach.

Johnson had then ranked close to the top-10 at least one year.

Tell me how many wins Jones has against winning teams. It's pretty similar to Franklin's and most people on here are somewhat excited to have Jones as the coach of UT.

@BFeldmanCBS: BREAKING #Vandy coach James Franklin is expected to be the next head coach at #PennState, per source

Sports Chronicle™ ‏@SportsTalkZac
"James Franklin has accepted the Penn State head coach position. News will be shared later tonight. " - Per Source inside Penn State Staff

SIAP- (from 247)

Here's what we're hearing as of Thursday morning.
- Rodney Erickson and Dave Joyner were in Florida yesterday to meet with James Franklin. I'm told that Penn State had entered negotiations with Franklin on Tuesday afternoon. Penn State's offer was matched by Vanderbilt, and the Nittany Lions made a hefty counter offer. The pair left Florida with signs pointing to Franklin being the next head coach at Penn State. I believe the two sides are close with Franklin's agent hammering out final details. Like I've said all week, I think Thursday is the day that it gets done.
- As we noted, Penn State made a hefty counter offer to Franklin. With that said, it's probably about as high as the Nittany Lions will go. I'm told that if things can't be worked out with Franklin for whatever reason, Penn State will move on and make an offer on Friday to Al Golden.
I still expect something to get done today.
