James Franklin is supposedly....

@BFeldmanCBS: BREAKING #Vandy coach James Franklin is expected to be the next head coach at #PennState, per source

His record speaks for itself. If JF can take a program with all the rape problems of earlier this year and get them to a 9 win season a little kiddy ped issue should be a piece of cake for him. Its all about experience

The main intrigue I had of Frank to Penn St was to see how much he could tweak Urban. That ought to be interesting.

Your point is my point. Relative to what Vandy has always been he's done a great job. He's won games that most other Vandy coaches have not been able to win. Rather than finish in the top 60 in recruiting, he's finishing in the top 25-35. I've said in numerous posts he's a very good coach who's done a fantastic job. Kudos.

But it doesn't stack up to other top programs and it shows....he hasn't beaten any other top programs.

I believe Franklin is a very good coach, has done a great job at Vandy and would do a great job at a place like Penn State or Texas. We'll probably see soon enough. But to call him a great coach while ignoring how he's gotten to a 24-15 record during his 3 years at Vandy is being willfully naive IMO.

Again, 5 of his wins this year came vs teams with a combined 9-51 record. He beat a hidtorically bad 4-8 Florida team absolutely decimated by injuries. He was completely blown out vs 2 of the 3 Top 25 teams he played (TAM & Mizzou) and was down 28-0 vs the 3rd (SCar) before they let off the gas.

This x 1000. Frank has done what other Vandy coaches couldn't. Beat the bad to average teams and take advantage of the low hanging fruit teams like UT and Fla when both were down. No other Vandy coach could. However, he has beaten 4 teams with a winning record in 3 years. 7-6 Ole Miss and NC State last year and 8-5 UGA and Houston this year. None of those 4 teams were that good to be honest. UGA was probably their best win and UGA was riddled with injuries. Hell, Butch has beaten a better team in one year than Frank beat in 3 years. That tells you something.

As Vols fans, it will be very interesting to and entertaining to watch Franklin antagonize other coaches. Especially Urban "Sociopath" Meyer.

oh you got me there

but why is the questions about Vandy recruits (which is asked about every school and every transfer) valid yet others are not? How many Vandy recruits would even be a take for UT?

I'm not saying he's bringing in 5* talent, but he's doing ok by Vandy standards.

Look, you can't have it both ways. If he can't recruit, then how is he winning 9 games back to back? He's a great coach and again, and don't give me the weak schedule argument. Everyone here bangs on other programs outside the SEC saying if they played an SEC schedule they would be exposed. Well, Franklin plays an SEC schedule and has won 18 games including a win over UGA who was ranked #15 at the time, and 35-17 win at UF, the same UF that spanked us by essentially the same score.

This past season he coached against 12 other coaches other than TN. Did he wind those other coaches and fanbases up? My point is, there were 12 other opportunities to watch him antagonize other coaches this year, but it seems only UT got wound up over him.

Do you think Jones is a good coach? If you do, you'll find he has 1 or 2 more wins against winning teams than Franklin does and he's been a HC twice as long.

If you're going to rip Franklin for not beating more teams with winning records then you have to hold Jones to the same standard.

Vandy students are burning their chemistry books as we speak. The ten that follow the football team that is.

And he won conf titles. What has Frank won? Again, I never said Frank or Jones weren't good coaches. I said look at who Frank has beaten. He got crushed against any team with a pulse this year outside of UGA who was basically neutered.

Half the damn league won the Big East in 2012!

Franklin's only HC experience is at Vandy. He didn't start out at CMU or Cincy. Saban would have 0 conference titles had he been the Vandy coach the past 3 seasons.

Outside of S. Carolina, who has Jones beaten? They look almost identical.

Here is the rub.
JF is a decent recruiter, and a very good coach.
He is also the luckiest douchbag in the world.
His SOS was lacking any real challenges.
He won the tossups, and lost the games he was out matched in.
He just happed on the job at the right time, and had the right attitude to bring in decent recruits. He and his support staff coached them up, and motivated them to play.
It helped that the tossups were created by circumstances outside of his control.
Thus, the lucky part.
You have to be good to cash in on the lucky breaks though.
I am indifferent to JF going or staying.
I do not care either way.
I would love for Butch to go Vols Deep on his Candy @$$.
He has likely hit his peak @ vandy, knows it, and is gone.
He is a smart guy, and will bolt leaving vandy better than he found it.
He was a homerun hire for vandy.
I hate it, but its the truth.
I don't think he will be in a position to repeat that success anywhere else he has the option to go.
He should have taken the Texas job, he would have been a great coach there.
I think that is the only place he would have had the tools to repeat what he did with vandy.
The only other place I could see him doing good would be Texas, or maybe LSU, or UF.
He needs a large pool of instate talent, because he is not a "great" recruiter.
He will motivate whereever he goes, that's his nature.

I'll give you a chance to count his conf titles again. Let's see if you can do it.

And yeah, Jones beat a USCjr team who finished in the Top 5. Frank has had 3 years and not done it once.
