Jim Tressel (merged)

I agree. Lets go over Tressels credentials
229-79 head coaching record
23-6 tournament record
12 time coach of the year
6 Big Ten championships
4 division 1AA national championships
1 div 1A national championships
Now compare that to these other fall back options!

The other "fall back" options could actually coach year 1. That is all I need to know.

What part of "show cause" do people not understand.

We understand completely. We also understand what it means to take a second choice hoping he can win. We need a proven winner and can take his show cause for the first year to get him! Or we settle for Golden, Strong or Fisher and end up screwed for years to come! Now the choice should be clear

Of course, and lose year one two three and four just like Dooley. What do we gain?

Ok, what do we do if JT is hired and he or one of his assistants make a small secondary violation while recruiting just as about EVERY team does yearly. I have seen some schools recently turn in 18-20 at a time. What if he commits the smallest of violations and the NCAA throws the book at us? They would be looking for anything the man does to make an example of UT and having the nerve to hire a coach with a show cause. There is a reason NO school has ever done it. "It's no big deal". You don't KNOW that. No school has ever thought it was worth the risk. IMO, UT is in no position to be that school to test it out.

You may be right. IMO we are in no position not to. When you are at the bottom, there is only one way to go! Also if the NCAA did not want the man to coach again they would have banned him from coaching. The sc was his punishment nothing more!

What was Tressel's record against the SEC?

1-3
Lost to South Carolina in Outback
Lost to Florida in NC Game
Lost to LSU in NC game
Won Sugar vs. Arkansas

But what I notice is that 3 of those were BCS bowls, and two of those were the NC game! He has coached 8 BCS bowls in 10 years with an overall 5-3 record. The other BCS loss was to Texas in the 2009 Fiesta. I can't help but think Tressel - 8 BCS bowls in 10 years....Tennessee - NO BCS bowls in 10 years, none since getting our butts kicked in the 2000 Fiesta. Hmmm.

I've always liked him and granted the NCAA chain is around his neck but his record is impresive by any means. It's not like he's a failure and Ohio State started tanking. I hope his name is at least in the mix.

No kidding! Granted, Urban Meyer is good, but nobody is good enough to go 12-0 his first season unless he starts with a team that was already good to begin with. So, yes, Ohio St was FAR from tanking when he was fired.

All I know (no sources, no link) is that Tressel's going to get another shot somewhere, and he's going to make some AD look like a genius for taking a chance on him. Yes, he can't do much the first year, but after that it's game on. I'd really like for that AD to be Dave Hart, but from the looks of it that's (unfortunately) not going to happen. I'm a Tresselhead, and I'm not ashamed of it. Bring "The Sweater Vest" to Knoxville!!!

I'm in it to win it, too. Tressel is a beast of a coach, and it had been pointed out (I think it was an si article)that his show cause is a flimsy slap on the wrist. Bring him on!

Is Tressel a viable option or is this more message board chatter? Would be nice to know there is a good candidate out there...

what would the sanctions be against the team, that hires him ? another 2 years left right ? or can he be hired if the NCAA is against it?

Just a thought ... maybe Hart will show the NCAA all these interviews and turn downs by other coaches, and that will be cause to hire Tressell?

Most AD's are probably a little spooked....but IMHO, not because they think like some here, that there is some NCAA Boogie Man waiting to get them if they hire him. Probably more because they don't want to deal with the initial bad PR and public criticism that might come with it, and they can dodge that by selecting from a pool of decent candidates without any known baggage.

However, it's not like we are talking about equals. Tressel is flat out the best available coach out there, bar none. To me, the tradeoff (a wrist slap or small scratch that goes away after a few games) doesn't outweigh the value. Dude can coach and recruit with the best of them. Just look at QB's. He got Terrell Pryor, who was the consensus No. 1 at the time. Then followed that up with the No.2 QB in Braxton Miller.

Urban Meyer is sure grateful for Tressel's recruiting ability.

I hope not...I liike him but funny you cannot find anything in terms of comments from him saying no, yea or even if he's looking or wanting to coach again. Just rumors of teams and fans wanting him.

The sanctions are on tressel not UT. He can't coach the 1st 5 games and a bowl game.

if he misses the austin peay and western ky games, we should win anyway, then we play oregon and fl on the road (loses)..then south alabama (win)..show cause is over and we get him back home for ga....

why in the hell would you not consider him....can get him here at a low cost...proven winner ...championship coach and recruiter....no brainer...

I totally agree. He's the best coach out there.. would definitely be the boost our program needs.

Bill King just confirmed that Jim Tressel was contacted by Haslam about the UT job a few weeks ago. He doesn't know how far the talks went and his feeling is that Tressel didn't have much interest. He says it's not happening with Tressel.

Best news I have heard in days.

"Yeah, come coach at Tennessee or about 6 weeks this year".

a couple weeks ago..before he was going to senior day and getting carried of the field on the players shoulders...what do you think he would say...now have Hart call him and make him a legitimate offer....

Tresel could be waiting on a offer from his neck of the woods,he might not be interested in coming to the SEC,he has been rudely treated here :)
