Jim Tressel resigns

tOSU is working with the NCAA for the most part and they just canned their coach.

If I had to bet, the Bucknuts won't get hammered. They'll lose a handful of scholarships and Tressel will never coach again.

Seems like this goes a lot deeper than one coach. Will be interested to see how the SI article plays into this and what else is investigated.

If this has been going on for 10 years, tats and cars, at somepoint you are going to get a bare minimum Failure to Monitor, and at this point I would argue a LOIC.

Sorry for the accountant in me to come out, but this is screaming lack of internal controls of tOSU athletic dept. that one person could effectively keep it from everyone else.

It does sound like Ohio State is working with the NCAA but the fact that they are looking into 50 more players might bury them. If you've got 50 guys all receiving cash, cars and special benefits, I don't know how you can call it anything other than lack of institutional control.

Look at the stuff they pinned on Kiffin after he left. It's easy to say "We told him to follow the rules but he didn't listen".

I do agree it's a systemic problem. tOSU has been dirty for a long time.

The statute of limitations is going to limit how many of those 50 are actually able to be used against tOSU.

It's obvious there is a lack of institutional control. However, they will try to weasel out and blame it all on Tressel to keep the program from getting the death penalty.

The NCAA doesn't want one of its largest money makers getting hammered.

Doesn't the rule say that they can ignore the statue of limitations if there's an obvious pattern of complete disregard for the rules?

I don't think that's going to happen again after SMU. At least not to any relevant program.

The NCAA doesn't want one of its largest money makers getting hammered.
The thing is, if they don't hammer them, they would essentially be saying that some schools are basically untouchable. That can't be a message they want to send.

They had basketball issues a while ago right? I don't think OSU is on probation for that, but probation would make things much worse for them right now.

Also, didn't we hear that the OSU compliance department knew about the car dealership issue but didn't address it because they didn't think it was a violation? If that's true, that should automatically lead to harsh penalties.

Yes but there's no reason to go back if 20 some odd players have done it in the past 4 years. It would just be overkill

It's basically the only punishment that fits the crime

I agree. That's why the NCAA will gladly ban Tressel for life and slap a 5 scholarship reduction on tOSU for 3 or 4 years. tOSU gets punished and the big bad Tressel is jobless

See above

I like OSU, but a 5 scholarship reduction would be insulting. If that happens, they should probably award Tennessee scholarships for their NCAA issues.

As far as the death penalty, I believe that's only for repeat violators. I don't think OSU can get it if they aren't already on probation.

I don't know how Ohio State would get off any easier than USC, who the NCAA was not shy about sending back to the stone age.

I'd be pissed at how Ohio State handled it too, though. Maybe it's way different, but it seems like the Buckeyes were having a great time thumbing their nose, making light of the situation, and keeping crucial details under wraps.

I think it's a little different, though. USC acted as if they couldn't care less while the NCAA was investigating. OSU is at least scared enough to serve up Tressel.

Fair enough, that's true. It just seems like with the depth, the number of players, as opposed to one player like in USC's case, I don't know, maybe just serving up the head coach is not enough. I guess we'll see.

Well, Ohio State and USC certainly dug their own graves, so to speak, but I feel like last week's South Park summed up the NCAA pretty well.

For their sake I hope their compliance dept is as anal-retentive as ours was and can provide the details to prove it. I'm sure you know as well or better than as me that we escaped a lot more in football by the hair on our ass.

Pryor showing up for the team meeting driving a 350Z with temporary plates.....arrogant or retarded...

Pryor, for sure, has played his last game at Ohio State. Fair? Probably or maybe not completely. Fair has nothing to do with it. It just is.

WKNR reports that Pryor showed up at the team meeting yesterday driving a Nissan sports car - WITH TEMPORARY PLATES. We all love his talent, but how, with all that is going on, could he do that?

I wouldn't be surprised if Pryor simply withdrew from school. There's talk of a supplemental NFL draft. Time to tuck tail.

There isn't a draft because of the lock out so he's screwed. There is no incentive for him to stay in school though. And he is arrogant, crazy, stupid as hell to be pimping rides around after this. I mean he cost Tressel his job. Just imagine if say Casey Clausen who was supposed to be the next Manning/Martin did this too Fulmer ( Remember he was in his peak of winning 10-11 games a yr at that time ) and ruin Rocky Top. We would run his a** out of town. Don't athlete know how to keep it on the low low anymore. That's the number one rule of the streets.

Maurice Clarett, Troy Smith, Santonio Holmes, the Tat 5, Terrelle Pryor, stolen shoes, memorabilia for tats/money/weed, 50 car purchases under investigation, tickets and watch traded for Chevy Tahoe, etc... There is no way OSU compliance department was not complicit at the very least due to their ignorance. My guess is they will suspend the infractions meeting in August to further their investigation. Good luck hanging Tressel out to dry. They will be tagged with lack of institutional control. Gene will be the next to fall and it can't be soon enough for me.

The lockout didn't stop the first draft. Pryor did not cost Tressel his job. Tressel did.
