Just lost ESPN on Spectrum

True ... but the timing of this was obviously strategic on Disney's part. They waited until moments before the kickoff of the first game of the first full weekend of major college football to do this.

You can blame whoever you want for the failure to reach a compromise, but Disney deserves some heat for strategically timing this blackout to maximize the aggravation of Spectrum's customers.

It's not a bad day for the streaming services. That's for sure.
Sounds like smart business. Make spectrums customers biatch at spectrum.

Absolutely. Spectrum tried to dictate terms to the party with greater power. Doesn't usually work well and didn't here. If I step up to the plate and taunt Randy Johnson to hit me with a fastball, I better be prepared for when a fastball comes hurling at my face.

The problem is that Spectrum decided what the customers wanted without consulting the customers. Did anyone receive any notice that there were contract negotiations ongoing, which may affect coverage? I didn't. That would have at least prepared me and many others, mitigating the emotional shock factor that Disney used to their advantage perfectly. Disney has done this twice before: to Youtube TV and to Dish/SlingTv. This isn't a new move in their playbook; it's public knowledge they've used this move before and yet somehow Spectrum was caught with their pants down. Lack of due care on their part, in my opinion. While I think it reasonable to presume a customer doesn't want to pay more than they currently are, it doesn't take into account other factors. We're seeing today, along with Spectrum much to their own dismay, that people were willing to pay more and they got it wrong.

Disney isn't an altruistic business, despite their many charitable endeavors. Without making money, they can't do their charitable endeavors or even continue to operate. They've been facing declining share price and profits lately and, like any business, did what they had to do: Extract value out of a profitable product. Sucks, but I'm willing to pay $5 or so more to keep ESPN and co.

It didn't affect me, because being the Hall of Fame couch potato that I am, I cut the cord a long time ago. I have the Ultimate Quarterly package on Fubo TV, Hulu Live TV and YouTube TV, but it still bothers me that Disney would do this. Being "cut throat" during a business negotiation is one thing ... screwing over people who are not involved in the negotiation is something else. When Disney pulled the plug at the last minute, they inconvenienced a large cross-segment of consumers with the expectation that these people will only blame Spectrum for not having these football games on. Hopefully, cable subscribers are well-informed enough to hold Disney accountable for this under-handed tactic.
Don't I recall Disney doing the same thing a couple of years ago to YouTube TV right before or just after the start of football season? It might've been Hulu. Because of the timing, I think they resolved it before that Saturday.

It's a business strategy. I'm as pro capitalism as anyone but waiting to pull the plug on the stations until just hours or minutes before football season starts is a savage negotiation technique.

Yep...My brother in Nashville has Comcast....What's funny here in West Tn we have Charter...but when they call you back to remind you of service coming up...or to take a survey etc....My caller ID shows Comcast! I asked a Charter guy about this and he hee hawed around and I said....You both are pretty the same...he pretty much said yes.

That's a two way street. Disney said pay us more. Spectrum decided that price was too high and their customers don't want it at that price
The mouse is making customer service very hard for spectrum with what they do and spectrum is fighting for their customers some what I suppose.

I got youtube tv but if you want bally, FUBO is apparently where its at.
Directv Stream has everything, main stations, ESPN, SEC, ACC, Big10, Bally, and more. Just add ESPN+ for anything else. Plus, no contract, and you can share with others.

It was a move worthy of organized crime.
If only there were a Presidential candidate with a history of not being afraid to take on Disney 🤔

I’d like to see our lawmakers pass a law that when this happens, the provider and channel, must immediately refund the consumer, and the provider must deduct the full charge for those channels until service is restored. Along with refunds to advertisers for loss of viewers. The accounting nightmare alone would be incentive to cut this out. Of course both these have huge lobbying groups so our lawmakers are already bought off

yeah, basically DOFU lags a lot. I found out that I have to keep reloading it from the streams getting taken down, and it basically sucks all around. I don't recall the app being that bad last year. It is free tho, and ya get what ya pay for.

If it’s all you got go for it. I’ve used it for fights and to catch some of the Thursday nfl games.

2 min behind or $200+ poorer per month? Hmmm...lemme think about that......

I get it. Do what you gotta do. My spectrum is just under $150 for cable and internet. If I dropped cable and went with YouTube tv I’d save about $20 a month.

This is definitely all on ESPN. We constantly see articles about record breaking sports broadcast rights. It's because ESPN can bid any number it wants and then force us to pay it for them. When these pissing matches happen, the end result is always that the carrier caves (which they have to with customers jumping ship) and then customers end up paying extra. We're the ones footing the bill in all this. It's ridiculous.

This will get resolved in short order. Spectrum has too much market share for Disney to walk away from that relationship. Disney is hemorrhaging badly financially.
Disney‘s cash hemorrhage is what makes them so dangerous. They are getting desperate. I fully expect Disney to find a suitor to buy them out soon

Too bad CBS can’t step back into the void ESPN is leaving

It did.
You just had to jump around to different links when one went down.
The YouTube Censors have been playing streaming „whack-a-mole“ very efficiently so far this year. Have to chase new ones down several times a game this year

Weird, I got ABC, but no ESPN channels. Just the notice from Spectrum pointing fingers at Disney. So tired of these Corporate Shenanigans.

Sling TV has a special of $27 for the first month. It has ESPN and SEC channels and in select cities ABC with RDU being one of the select cities.

I thought this was a cheap solution until Spectrum and Disney comes to an agreement.
