Just So Everyone Knows, Gruden is a .500 head coach.

Ah, it's so cute how the Doolovers have a new purpose in life - to question the record of a Super Bowl champion coach.

Don't worry Doolovers, Gruden may take Dooley's job, but that doesn't mean you have to replace that big poster of Dooley you've got hanging over your bed.

In their defense, what else can they do now? They can't call sportstalk every show, every day and complain about Dooley's firing now that the Grudenites have taken over the airwaves...they are lost right now...and now they have lost their leader, Hyams. Now Doc is their only ally...

Pete Carroll .489
Nick Saban .469
Butch Davis .414
Lane Kiffin .250

Gotta throw this A-hole in the mix
Spurrier
12 W 20 L 0 T WP = 0.375

In Spurrier's last three games as the Redskins head coach, opponents outscored them 85–31. He resigned on December 30, 2003.

At the end of the day he has a Superbowl ring, it revered by recruits, can coach up our QB.

If you don't want Gruden, go cheer for someone else.

Coaching in the NFL is nothing like coaching in College, any amount of success in one may not mean success in the other.....that Said of course Gruden would make a good coach, but whether he would put Tennessee up to expectations does remain in doubt.....as it would with ANY Hire.....if we can get him I sincerely hope he is tied down to a long contract....in case he gets flighty after putting up with the retarded commentary by half the fans. The one thing I will say abotu Gruden is given his personality he won't hesitate to send a problem player packing...and God knows we've needed more of that for about a decade.

Norv Turner - .485
Mike Shanahan - .562
Bill Walsh - .609
Mike Holmgren- .592
Steve Mariucci - .518
Brian Billick - .556
Jack Del Rio - .489
Marvin Lewis - .477
Andy Reid - .597
Tom Coughlin - .556
Dennis Erickson - .417
Lovie Smith - .565
Bill Bellichek - .724 at NE, .450 at Cleveland
June Jones - .348
Steve Spurrier - .375
Nick Saban - .469
John Robinson - .524
Chuck Noll - .566

Even guys that have multiple superbowl rings have a comparable record to Grudens, some are worse. Also, the franchise has much to do with how successful a coach is see Belicheck. Several unsuccessful pro coaches have thrived in the college game.

There's no such thing as a "sure thing", Gruden's a pretty safe bet.

Petersen, Patterson just to named a couple.

No way. Both would be good fall-back choices but neither would bring the instant star power Gruden would. Don't think either one would be coming here anyway. Peterson staying at Boise and Patterson just built a huge house. Gruden trumps both.. Try again.

All this talk about how great he is...well, his record isn't much better than Derek Dooley's.

Just FYI

His pro record was .540.

He could be a potential disaster that we would be stuck with for years and years.

Just FYI you need to do more research. Saban's record in the NFL was 15-17 .469 which is worse than Grudens.

hahahahahahahahaha, wow, lololololololololol, statistics are your friend OP. Or, they should be.

And Saban's was under. 500. Dude he coached at Oakland and won a SB at Tampa. TB is not exactly the largest market and easiest place to win games. If a guy can be a .540% coach at Oak and TB then that is pretty amazing. Not to mention didnt he win the SB with Trent F'N Dilfer as his QB? Pretty damn amazing and not many coach's could do that.

Actually it was Brad Johnson (Dilfer won his with the Ravens), but still Johnson wasn't much better.

How did you know about my poster?

Tennessee Vols all time win % .684
Tampa Bay Bucs under .400
Gruden .540
So he should win 82% of his games at UT :p

Misleading post that ignores logic ...
Dont know if Chuckie would ever coach here ...but Saban is 15 and 17 as an NFL coach , with no playoff appearances. Gotta compare apples to apples . Gruden , 54% winner in NFL games ...Saban 46%. Tony Dungy , the highest winning percentage of 'modern' NFL coaches is at 64%.

Basically , 54% is success in the NFL compared to the best modern NFL percentage. Wonder how Chuckie would do as a college coach considering that he was statistically a very successful NFL coach? It seems unsuccessful NFL coaches can do pretty well in CF ( Saban ..see also Spurrier )

Look...just playing devils advocate and have some questions myself. I have no doubt that he should be able to recruit. I don't know much about him, Morris, or any of the other coaches suggested that he might be bringing if he came but looking at them and what they have accomplished isn't anything that shouts home run to me. Don't get me wrong, I am all for Gruden getting the job in hopes that he can turn this around. I understand that NFL and college are completely different but it's not necessarily a given that he would be outstanding in college. The argument has been made that the superbowl he won was with Dungy's team and he was shortly fired afterwards. Morris was fired as well. I'm all about hoping he turns out well but I am less convinced that he would come in and be the home run we so desperately need. Can someone convince me?

Didn't Gruden's Oakland Raiders team make it to the Super Bowl the year before he won it with TB? I'm just asking. I think that's right though. And apparently, even if it was with Dungy's team he had to teach his way in a few short months that the players bought into and won with right?

If we get Gruden, I hope the OP never posts again.

He thinks coaching in the NFL is the same as coaching in the worst conference in college football.

Mora was 31-33... he sure has been an awful hire for UCLA. 9-2 and playing in the Pac 12 championship his first season.

Gruden's Raiders were poised to go to the Super Bowl in2001 and likely win it except the "Tuck Rule" was all but legislated on the field during their AFC title game against the New England Patriots. Thus ushering in the era of Big Brady.

The Gruden Raiders rose to greatness they hadn't enjoyed since the mid-80s and have not seen since. Callahan got them there the next year but the formula with Gannon/Garner/Brown/Rice held strong.

And as far as winning percentages:
Tom Landry 60%
Bill Cowher 62%
Bill Walsh 61%
Bill Parcells 56%.

All Super Bowl winners and excellent coaches. The only two NFL HCs over 70 percent for a career are Lombardi and John Madden.

The NFL game is a far cry from college in terms of coaching. So winning percentages don't carry a ton of weight.

Gruden. All. Day. :matrix:
