'18 LA CB Brandon Davis (Tennessee signee)

I believe if you play football, you have to be on a football scholly. This prevents schools from stacking their non revenue teams with football players.

True, if he's on a scholarship, he counts against football.

15.5.9.1 Football. [FBS/FCS] In football, a counter who was recruited (per Bylaw 15.02.8) and/or offered financial aid to participate in football and who participates (practices or competes) in football and one or more sports (including basketball) shall be counted in football. A counter who was not recruited (per Bylaw 15.02.8) and/or offered financial aid to participate in football and who competes in football and one or more sports (including basketball) shall be counted in football.

Interesting that if not recruited he only counts if he competes (as opposed to practices if he was considered recruited).

15.02.8 Recruited Student-Athlete. For purposes of Bylaw 15, a recruited student-athlete is a student-athlete who, as a prospective student-athlete:

(a) Was provided an official visit to the institution's campus;

(b) Had an arranged, in-person, off-campus encounter with a member of the institution's coaching staff (including a coach's arranged, in-person, off-campus encounter with the prospective student-athlete or the prospective student-athlete's parents, relatives or legal guardians); or

(c) Was issued a National Letter of Intent or a written offer of athletically related financial aid by the institution for a regular academic term.

Yes. This is true. Now, I don't know about the loophole if he does not actually play in a game. I have no idea how you would manage something like that. I guess if he balls out in the Fall, you could make that decision, but I don't really know how if you already have signed your 25. Maybe he is a fall back if someone has grade issues or something. Seems pretty strange.

No disrespect to the young man but no way this is a full scholly.

It could very well be a full offer. Kid has a good tape.

Pruitt has made some big moves. But still haven't been in Knoxville long enough yet for their coffee to be cold. 18' with early signing period was tough.

Staff could see a project to bulk up. Size, speed, and instincts are there.

I guess they could make him a blue shirt if he’s good enough to play in a game. I’m pretty sure you have to be an initial counter at some point, if he plays.

True, regarding initial counter. As mentioned, the staff has been quoted as saying they don't want to do blueshirts. Who knows? It will out even out somehow, I am sure.

The bottom line is that our staff thinks this kid can help us in some way, so

BOOM!!!!!

Am not familiar with this individual, but just saying that any player from this school deserves a serious look, as John Curtis H.S. is almost like South Louisiana's version of the IMG Academy. LSU takes plenty of J.C. guys.

Whoa. Aside from my dad I believe you're the only other UT fan I'm aware of here in Baton Rouge. Howdy!

Taking this kid as a CB commit cannot be looked at as good news based on having 3 5* CBs, 2 4* CBs and underrated Eddie Smith on the board right now. Only way this isn’t bad news is if he’s a PWO or blue shirt. Even a blue shirt is questionable on this one to me but I suppose I’ll refrain an opinion until signing day to see what the plan is. Or maybe an article will specify why this happened now.

I think there is a difference between actively seeking blue shirts to push the can down the road like Butch, and being forced into it because a dude balls out so much. I’d assume the latter would be Pruitt’s plan.

Its been said multiple times taking this kid has zero bearing on any other CB target.

This is what I stated earlier. I think UT can sign Davis to a Baseball scholarship since he has not officially been "recruited" by the football team. If Davis plays in a football game, he would then be counted as a Football counter. Gives CJP some flexibility with the numbers.

I have to wonder if the baseball coach might use a schollie and play for him year 1 and then share the next year.... guess he could practice though...

No commitment showing yet on Rivals or 247. Haven't found him yet on ESPN, but their UT list doesn't show him.

If Pruitt is okay giving him a scholly, I'll roll with it. He's not going to get every player he targets, but I expect every player he gets is someone he believes can contribute. IMO, he gets at least three years to show us something. Four and five star recruits are great, but if he can win with lesser ranked players, that's alright, too. And in the end, isn't that what we really want? Wins on the field? I can live with not winning the recruiting rankings every year as long as we start winning more where it really counts.
