Lady Vols Logo

If it was a business decision, that would run along someone's political leanings...since that sound business and marketing decision runs counter to a stated position then it CAN'T BE ABOUT BUSINESS!!! It has to be some convoluted liberal/PC conspiracy that was rubber stamped by a Republican governor? Sometimes when it sounds paranoid...it's worse.

It is not about choosing a name; the name was chosen years ago; it is about changing a name that many feel exemplifies a positive.

From my perspective that's the crux of this issue, in that the AD's treatment of the "Lady Vols" name betrays their negative view of the Lady Vols name and what have you. Recall Bruce Pearl, who backed Pat and her program 100% and pointedly turned down the opportunity to complain when they named the court "The Summitt." Bruce appeared genuinely proud of the Lady Vols. He talked about how much it meant to him and how he'd even consider it a plus for recruiting. Comparatively, the current AD doesn't appear proud of the Lady Vols at all -- in fact, all they seem to point out are the negatives they can find to help bolster their case for eliminating it. Cheek's letter even cites football ticket sales, as if there haven't been hard times in the past or present of a program. But somehow, in spite of fat TV deals with the SEC and the Nike apparel deal, somehow we suddenly just can't afford to let that Lady Vols thing go anymore. Somehow I'm supposed to believe that a temporary "ONE TENNESSEE" marketing campaign is more meaningful than 40 years of tradition.

I'd rather they just say "we don't like it, it's not up for discussion, we feel it's not correct for the current political climate, and we want to eliminate the cost and hassle of keeping it alive." You know? Just be honest. Say "we think it's degrading" or say "it costs X amount and we don't want to pay X amount anymore." I feel like honesty would have been a more respectable path. Instead we hear about football tickets and Nike's consulting advice and how we need unity as if we've never had unity in the past. I dislike trying to shuffle the blame around as they've done -- it feels disingenuous and I don't believe them.

That said, this change is what it is. They're done with the first step, and I have to imagine that once Summitt's legacy and coaching staff is far enough removed from the program they'll fold it back in as well. I don't begrudge them wanting more control over things they have to pay for. But I find it disappointing that, since the AD can't see value in the name for themselves, they dismiss the value that others have placed in it. I admit I don't necessarily see all the value in it myself sometimes. But other people, particularly former Lady Vols players that I know, they all tell me how much it means to them. And them, them I believe.

So you'd rather your mortal enemies say these hateful juxtaposed statements that they couldn't possibly feel? To help you deal? :ermm:

Good post. I really think your illustration of Pearl's handling of the court name brings to the surface that He was in much better tune than our leaders. He may have had his shortcomings, but Pearl knew how to build a unified program and take what you have for a better bottom line.

Pearl would have sold the heck out of Nike! :yahoo:

Political correctness trumps everything. And, they know what's best for our little Ladies.

I'm sure they've worked hard (not in the way you're saying) to earn the right to like what they want. Even if a fringe group didn't grant them permission. :)

Actually it's the basis of it. This is an alumni issue according to these ladies. Most of them are just fine being "Vols."

How about name(s)? So many have come out AGAINST it, Candace, Cierra, Alexis, etc. that surely there would be no problem naming a Lady Vol who SUPPORTS it. I would think the AD would have no problem with that, so, whoever it is would not mind being named.

Really, if that is the case, you wouldn't mind then letting current and former Lady Vols decide. They could hire a third party firm to conduct the poll or survey. I'd be fine with whatever they decide.

Unfortunately its not up to them and it never was up to them. If the backlash is bad enough and enough people want it changed back, it will happen.

You'll "be fine" regardless...you have no say. :)

Let "former" decide how the university markets itself? Sounds positively LIBERAL...never work.

That's the truth of it. I'll add my two cents about the changes, and about the way they were enacted, but the reality is that this is all aftershocks from folding in the two ADs and consolidating the power into the single department. Football makes the money, and whoever is in charge of football gets to make the rules. And the person in charge of football feels it's unnecessary to have the name anymore. And Tennessee athletics is a business first -- as all college programs in Division I are.

Well though that is not his premise. His premise is that only a few former Lady Vols want the name back. So, then hire a third party to conduct a survey/poll of current and former and let them decide. He shouldn't have a problem with that then since he is so sure they would say they want to be Vols and not Lady Vols.

Also, the problem is the BOT is somewhat insulated from public opinion. They are an appointed position and are usually there because they have incurred political favors and whatnot. It was kind of designed that way so their decisions would not be influenced by daily politics but as we all know that is not the case.
