Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

58 out of how many schools? How many total students? Anyone sick?

They tried to do similar stories about my county when school started and it worked out to less than 2 per school. It was nothing

Exactly - I really wish some people would stop with the damn drama and stupid statistics. 77% increase in cases? ok - what exactly does that mean? 8 more cases? 20? 50? Anybody sick? Anybody dying?

I absolutely loathe the chicken littles and drama queens that keep on posting these nonsense statistics with no context and and headline-grabbing-but-moronic conclusions.

58 out of almost 1.5 million students....

.0038%

And that's just k-12. Add in however many college students. And then however many teachers/admin/janitors/lunch ladies/etc.

It's clear that they'll always select the statistic that sounds the worst and provide as little clarifying information as they can. Lying by omission.

Yep. They absolutely are lying. It's either by stupidity or on purpose. Both are extremely frustrating.

That's still wimpy MSM reporting. Instead of calling Fauci out for what directly contradicts what this former FDA chief said, the article only mentions where they agree:

Other experts like Dr. Anthony Fauci have also previously cautioned against drastically lifting coronavirus restrictions, saying while cases are going down, the plateau is not low enough.

"I don't know why they're doing it, but from a public-health standpoint it's certainly ill-advised," Fauci, who is President Joe Biden's chief medical advisor, told CNN earlier this month after some states lifted mask mandates.

IT'S A SURGE!!1!!!1!1!

Let's be careful not to stick our heads in the sand and accept facts:

Michigan is experiencing increasing cases among individuals ages 10 to 19, who have the highest current case rate and faster growth than other age groups, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services.

Michigan schools face financial pressure to open classrooms as COVID cases rise

Here is a list of 50 new school outbreaks that were reported in just one day last week:

Coronavirus - School-Related Outbreak Reporting

There were tons more on the list after that which were reported in the past month.

Folks, you gotta go where the facts lead you and you can't deny these facts. I don't know how else to put it

Do you even see the number of "cases" in each of these "outbreaks"?

You ought to take your own advice. Single digit case numbers in a day is hardly an outbreak, especially if- like everywhere else- these kids have next to zero symptoms.

Stop the fear porn.

Facts are, it is harmless to these youth.

Keep schools closed and kids quarantined, then start mixing everyone back together, of course you will see outbreaks. In regards to kids, this would be like reporting about outbreaks of colds at schools.

which facts do you want to use?

The fact is FL has been in person schooling since August with very little issue. The one you're using as an example of surging cases (not illness, cases) has been locked down.

Would this surge be happening if they weren't testing healthy kids and using mindless contact tracing rules?

When is everyone due going to wake up to the fact this was a massive overreaction?

Yep. They absolutely are lying. It's either by stupidity or on purpose. Both are extremely frustrating.
The relationship between media and politicians is perverse. Media needs sensationalism. When there isn't anything sensational, they present the story in the most sensational way possible. I don't ascribe a political agenda to the practice; I really believe it is about market share/circulation/ratings. The weather channel sensationalizes storms and weather events even to the point of getting busted on video struggling to remain upright in the winds or doing a report on flooding in a ditch while wearing waders. Other respected media (CNN, Fox, NYT) do the same covering different topics.
Politicians need media to broadcast their image and message. You cannot gain power in politics without name recognition and a following. Politicians know sensationalism is the currency of media and they do their best to exploit it for their own promotion.

But but but...if 4 people had it and now 7 people have it, that is about an 77% increase. 77%!!!! Its a surge! Make the headline! The horror, the absolute horror, we should shut it all down. Write more articles, pass another stimulus, keep schools closed. After all, forget the actual real numbers in context, it's 77%!!!

When is everyone due going to wake up to the fact this was a massive overreaction?

I really and honestly believe there are people that want this to last forever. It's insanity.

What we really need is another sensationalist story to break, war to start, etc...so the news can focus on the next shiny object and the sheep and drama queens can finally move on from this.

Chalk it up to piss poor management and sensationalism.

There are 3550 k-12 schools. Plus however many colleges and admin buildings there. Let's say 5k. That's 1% of schools having outbreaks.

With no information on what those outbreaks consist of.

Where exactly is that in this case? I'm very curious as to how you are interpreting these numbers and what should be done about it.

Here's what should be done:

1) Accept that outbreaks can and do happen in schools
2) Keep schools open
3) Send sick kids home and keep them home until medically cleared

That's a hell of a lot of outbreaks in schools. Of course these kids likely aren't going to the hospital or dropping dead because they're kids. But don't come in here and tell me outbreaks don't happen in school. 53 different schools reporting outbreaks in one day can't be brushed off as nothing

My nephews just started back to school a week or two ago and both have colds now. Elementary schools are petri dishes full of germs and viruses and keeping kids home is not helping them build immunity.

how about 1% of something?

In one day. At that rate it'll hit 100% in 100 days. It can't be ignored
