Looking like KJH is the play

I have an idea. Let’s find out which coaches insist that their players shoot left-side layups with their left hand, and right side layups with their right hand, and then choose one of those coaches.

I don’t know about anyone else, but that may be my biggest pet peeve about today’s game — too many players shoot layups with the wrong hand and that’s why they miss more of them than players back in the old days did.

Find a coach who teaches that fundamental skill and you’ve got a winner.

Maybe fulmer is focused on which one is FAR more cheaper?

I dont know anything about here, just crazy hearing people talk about rioting if she is hired.

But it will be a genteel riot. I am providing the marshmallows and @Tennesseefan2019 the hot dogs. @reality theory is in charge of lighting, I believe he plans on it being torch light. Seating will also be available, I heard it would be sofas, but I can’t remember whom offered to bring them. I am hoping @T_Vol376 will handle the table linens. We still need Volunteers for plates and silverware. Maybe @Lucy will handle that. She’s new and we need to include her (no knives, Lucy, you just don’t know in this group if that would be safe). It will be very nice; please bring glasses, no beer bottles or cans (unless you at least have orange and white koozies). Meeting place is at Pat’s statue. That way a march to Phil’s office will just be a nice stroll. Please RSVP to @DarthVol. I am sure he will be glad to tell you where to go. I have always found him to be very succinct and helpful.

So if we can’t get Walz because he’s shady (My mother’s hairdresser has a friend in Nashville whose sister-in-law was told by her uncle that he heard from someone named Judy that said she heard from a former Texas Tech cheerleader that Jeff Walz was shady.) and he is a man (Which is just gross and disgusting and It wouldn’t be right to have someone that is attracted to females anywhere near their locker room. ) I guess Gail G. Is the only other coach with any kind of success at a large institution left. I’ll ask my mom to ask her hairdresser about Gail.

I’ve got the linens covered, @Smallvol#1! 😉

Love Kellie but am fearful about her being the next coach. Couple of big things:
1. After seeing Holly's legacy crash and burn the last 7 years, I first and foremost do not want the same happening to Harper. She's an all time favorite for many fans and if she isn't successful, I'd hate to see her UT legacy get tainted.

2. It doesn't appear she's a great offensive coach. Based on stats and the tournament games from the tournament games I saw, her teams play like an old school Tennessee team that doesn't shoot for high percentages or have good A/TO ratios, but rebounds well and gets to the line a lot. That style of play worked (and worked well) for Pat when she was coaching but the game has evolved and you need to have a top offense in order to be a title contender. For Harper's teams, the last 3 years her teams have shot 42.6, 40.8 and 38.6% from the field. 3pt has been between 31-33.3% all 3 years. Each team has had a negative A/TO ratio. I'm sorry, but those numbers aren't going to cut it. In today's atmosphere, you need teams that are much stronger offensively. You need good set plays and ball movement. You cannot be careless with the ball. Offense was probably Holly's biggest weakness and it should be top priority for whoever Tennessee hires.

3. Her W/L just isn't strong enough IMO to be the top candidate for the Lady Vols position. Under 60% doesn't cut it.

4. I think there are better mid-major candidates than Jolly. Any of Baranczyk, Fortier, Banghart and Krieger all have better resumes and run stronger offensive systems than Jolly. Look at any of their results the last 4-5 years.

5. Even if they don't go that mid-major route, I think they should go HARD for Gail Goestenkors. GG hasn't been able to win a title but her teams were peer level to Tennessee and Connecticut from 2001-2007. Tennessee gives her a fantastic platform to immediately contend for championships and she'd also get a big payday. She has the coaching chops and in the past recruited lights out at Duke.

Honestly at the end of the day, I will be thrilled if Tennessee hires Kellie. She, or anyone who is hired, is going to be a big upgrade from Holly. I just hope they don't hand her the position based off a Cinderella run and the fact that she's an iconic alum.

Yes, but that is entirely different. He had great success at the division II level which carried right on in to his time at Milwaukee after he took them to the sweet 16 in only his fourth season he was clearly a coach on the rise.

Harper hasn't had any significant past success, this was her best season. She has had past failures though. Bruce never did.
That is not true. She has many significant successes all through her career. She was named Coach of the Year in two different Conferences. She is one of only 11 Coaches ever, who have taken teams from 3 different schools to the NCAA Tournament. In the thread Raoul says Kelly Harper is Lady Vols Coach, on page 5, is a partial list of her accomplishments, please read.

It looks like the search may be over. Hope this works out because a couple more years of this mess and the Lady Vol brand is done. If Kelley had not won the 2 games in the NCAA tournament would we still be hiring her. Is this about those 2 games? Or other things? Don’t like Walz, fine. Go get Gail G.

I so hope this leap of faith works out when we had a couple of sure things I do hope I can look back at this ,next year, and laugh at how wrong I was. I really do because to me it was never about the man, the woman, the VFLs, it was about a program I grew up with finding its way back to the top.

On the doug matthews show he said he talked to fulmer and got the impression money isnt going to be an issue he said the boosters will pay money to get the right coach here to get the lady vols back to where they belong
Been my line of thinking. We don’t have a political AD. Fulmer wants to win and doesn’t like hearing fiscal responsibility whining imo. We’re going to field a team...that’s not up for debate. If we’re on our traditional level, we don’t LOSE money. So a good hire stops a drain.

The Tennessee job would be the perfect job for Gail Goestenkors to get back into the college game and show everyone that lightning CAN strike in the same place twice. She was amazing at Duke, and I feel like, at 56, she’s old enough and widely experienced enough to be able to hit the floor running, but not TOO old to be too close to retirement.

I could see her wanting to close her career out knowing what it feels like to be appreciated by an AD and a fanbase, and to pick up a couple of natties along the way.
Gail will restore Pat's legacy if she is offered the job.

To be honest I have no idea how good of a coach Kellie Harper is. I haven't watched any of her teams. So, my criticism isn't so much of her but this whole thought process.
WE'VE FOLLOWED THIS THOUGHT PROCESS BEFORE AT UT. Hire a former great guard that's part of Summitt's pedigree...and look how that turned out. It's just more of the same. I want something new! New thinking, new strategies, new blood in this program! Kellie Harper is just more of the same.
But, who knows. She might be a great coach.

Holly Warlick had absolutely NO head coaching experience whatsoever when she became head coach of the greatest women's basketball legacy ever. She played the good cop to Pat's bad cop in discipline issues. Her first 4 teams still had remnants of Pat's influence in them. That is why they were still pretty good. After that influence was gone the teams got progressively worse. I was never a big fan of Holly's but hoped for the sake of the program that she would succeed. It was a longshot from the start.
Comparing Kellie's coaching experience to Holly's is apples to raisins. Kellie has much more experience than Holly does at what you need for a head coach.
Players come to Tennessee because it is Tennessee. Even Holly said that. Holly was still having great recruiting classes even THIS year. Kellie's legacy to impress recruits ought to at least be as good as Hollie's.
I'm not 100% sure if Kellie or any of them would be a success at Tennessee, but there is nothing about Kellie's tenure as a coach that you could compare to Holly's and say, "That is why she is going to fail, just like Holly did."

Sometimes reality bites.

Let's consider some "rumored" names:

Gail G. bombed at Texas and subsequently resigned after a season as an assistant coach in the WNBA for reasons of "mental exhaustion'; She had success at Duke but her time seems to have past; bringing a coach coming off the heels of failure and mental exhaustion makes no sense. The LVs need an energizer bunny coach who brings excitement and passion in the manner of Dawn Staley (or heck Bruce Pearl at Auburn).

Carolyn Peck won an NC at Purdue with a team of All-Americans she inherited, but definitely deserves credit for 2 great seasons (an elite 8 and an NC); She then jumped to the WNBA where she had a losing record over 3 seasons. She took over at Florida and had an overall losing record. She was fired during her fifth season 2006–07 where the Gators had a 14-game losing streak and finished 9–22. Is Peck really the "answer"?

We can go down the list of established names and many don't look so great on closer inspection

As with Gail G. Peck Walz, and all the other wish list names, other than the rumor mills which have been particularly unreliable (insiders confirm Wes Moore to be named LV coach), no really knows who is actually interested in the job.

Fulmer may be having to work with a less than ideal set of options because none of the clear-cut star coaches want to move. Walz , Freese, and I guess we can add Wes Moore seemed like the only ones who might have even persuadable. Moore said no; who knows about the other two.

And superstar coaches like Mulkey and McGraw are not going to leave their programs any more than Pat Summitt would have left the LVs.

All the pie-in-the-sky why don't we hire Kara Lawson or Geno or Vic Schaefer. or now it seems Walz has just raised ridiculous false expectations such that who ever Phil does hire, there will be posters who rail "see he would not pay the money for Walz" conveniently ignoring the fact that Walz may have never been a viable option.

If it turns out KHJ is the one, well, yeah I would have liked to seen a much better credentialed coach and I think it is high time to move outside the family for new ideas. But realistically, that would likely mean betting on assistant coach who would be learning on the job as the HC of the LVs.
Suddenly, Harper's experiences starts to balance the equation a bit.

But, there is no logical reason to start throwing stones and proclaiming that Harper has just finished destroying the program before she has even held her first practice.

She might prove the doubters wrong and if not, I am sure her leash will be a lot shorter this time around.

A for effort!

She’s out of coaching after quitting her last three coaching jobs.
