Lunardi has us in the last 4 in as of today

Bad losses to UTEP, Xaiver, and NC State will be difficult to overcome. But, the Vols must beat some remainig ranked teams on their schedule.

They could help themselves a lot by finishing at least second the SEC East. There are still plenty of chances to make up for the poor start.

1) the only bad loss we have is UTEP
2) there is no sec divisions in basketball

Funny how much people talk out of their butt when they have no clue. Don't know why people can't just enjoy the last win and just focus one game at a time and let everything play out...if they miss the tourney, time to move on with CCM. But just everyone enjoy the season lol.

But, they can't afford anymore bad loses.

There is no more SEC East, gunner. It's one big 14-team boat.

Lol yup bro. It's my biggest pet peeve on here. It's like if your going to post something that you pulled outta your ass don't you wanna google it and make sure it's right?

Recruits know who goes to the NCAA on a regular basis. It's important to get there, and take your chances. Can't move forward as a program settling for the NIT.

That's a fair point. However, at the point where our program is right now... if.. and this is a big if... Cuonzo were a talented recruiter (and I am not sure whether he is or isn't) he would parlay an NIT win into a better recruiting class (to get this team to the next level). I get what you are saying, but I just think that just going to the NCAA is hollow. You have to go there to win, and we can't do that. Sorry, but we just can't. You gotta start somewhere, and I guess our disagreements lie in where that somewhere might be.

What I find interesting is that the same type of argument used here is falling short wrt football. Many fans would have been ecstatic to go to the Music City Bowl. Really? Why is a third tier bowl acceptable in football, but not in basketball? We have the same talent deficit in hoops vis a vis the rest of the conference/league as we do in football, yet Butch has pulled in a top 5 recruiting class while getting NO bowl game. Maybe Cuonzo is the problem....

I disagree with a 100% of this post. I can't believe you say going to the NCAA tourney is hollow smh

Kudos for BTO's analysis of our dance prospects.

We'll know a lot more when we visit Baton Rouge next week. If Richardson can continue his stellar play on the road...and if Barton truly turned a corner after the Christmas break...our prospects are really good.

Are you being serious?

At Xavier is a bad loss? That would be an incorrect statement, same for Nc State. The only bad loss we have at this point is UTEP.

THIS year, if we don't see enough improvement to go deeper than the opening round, it is. I just can't get excited about going in as a 9 seed (if we are that lucky) and getting whacked by College of Chareleston... JMHO. If we improve dramatically between now and tournament time, my opinion might change, but if we need a miracle just to get in... naaah.

Yes, my mistake, they changed that a few years ago. Still a second place finish or higher in the SEC would help the Vols chances a lot. Thanks for the correction.

And finishing 1st would help even more, right?

That doesn't change what you said about Xavier and Nc State though, neither is a "bad loss", and the win verse Xavier is actually considered a "good win".

You never answered my question...

Nobody is biting on this, so give it up. Success in the NIT is meaningless, unless you're a rebuilding program with no expectations.

I suspect you know this.

So what do you call them? Good losses?

No, they're losses.

The NCAA committee defines a bad loss as a loss to a team with a RPI over 100. A good win is a win over a team with a RPI better than 50.

Wichita State: 13
Xavier: 26
Nc State: 79
UTEP: 123

UTEPs RPI could very well creep inside of 100 which would mean none of our current losses would be labeled as "bad losses."

Sorry. I was attempting to with another post. My point is that if CCM is a good coach/recruiter HE would parlay a win in the NIT into a recruiting opportunity. USC apparently didn't have a good enough coach to take the recruits he got by winning the NIT a couple of times to the next level.

The advantage that CM has versus CBJ is that he doesn't have to recruit as many players to build the team. The disadvantage is that he needs the ones he DOES recruit have to produce. That is where coaching plays the most important part. Maybe the SC coach was a great recruiter but a crappy coach. Maybe CCM is from the same mold. I honestly don't know, but the performance I have seen in the last 2 years hasn't impressed me, and we seemingly have pretty good talent. Or... is he a crappy recruiter and just coaching them up to the best of their abilities? Something doesn't reconcile, and IMHO, just going to the tournament doesn't do anything for the program going forward.

Sorry for the rambling post. I'm just trying to get a handle on UT hoops.

Does that answer your question?

A loss is a loss, some are worse than others, but it never helps to lose to lesser teams, based upon talent alone they were bad losses.

You can quote the Index all that you want but at the end of the year when the season is over, those three loses will play a huge part on where UT is seeded or if they do make it in at all.

Does that answer your question?

So you think winning the NIT is some huge recruiting pitch?

Not for Tennessee or any other major conference team, that would be an embarrassing recruiting pitch lol.

So you are saying that losing in the first round of the NCAA is better?

What were FGCU?

I would say lucky. But where will they be THIS year? I would rather build a program that lasts, not one that has a good run and then fades into obscurity.

Your turn to answer my question. What are your realistic expectations if we go to the NCAA?

Absolutely.

The biggest negative being used against Martin in recruiting is that he's never been to the NCAAT. I can tell you with 100% certainty, Martin would rather go to the tourney and lose first round than win the NIT.
