Martin wants an extension and am sure a raise (rumor)

If those fans that you talk about actually didn't care like you say, they wouldn't be talking about the current staff at all. Tennessee basketball is not strong enough to have bandwagon fans currently. Everybody currently making any comments in the Tennessee basketball forum, whether I disagree with their comments or not, are diehard fans.
Besides, if you think Tennessee fans are acting any different than any other fanbase in the country you are mistaken.

Ok.

These aren't diehards driveby posting uninformed and negative garbage the past few weeks.

Hart almost has to give Martin the extension. Otherwise, opposing teams will use the fact that Martin has only 3years left on his contract against UT in recruiting. Recruits don;t want to sign somewhere where they do not know who the coach will be in 3 years.

Due to financial issues at UT, Hart has no other choice lest he completely cripple the program

What about other coaches using the fact that CCM has never made it to the "dance" in recruiting?

Which carries more weight with high school athletes - Going to the dance or what their prospective coach makes and how long is his contract?

I think that more than a few athletes are questioning why these coaches are becoming millionaires off the sweat of their collective brows.

Just because there are coaches being overpaid doesn't justify Martin getting a raise. If he doesn't like his contract, he can leave. As someone posted earlier, we quadrupled his salary when we hired him. I really am starting to like CCM less and less. First the comments about thinking we had done enough for a bid before the bama game, and now this.

The players we need at TN are looking MORE at how many players this coach sends to the NBA.
Not sure how he's being perceived in that category. Or maybe they're Stoked.

That last argument can be made for any organization that works under an owner or boss. Why should the boss get a bunch of money and the floor associates get minimum wage? The athletes are getting thousands of dollars in free education, free food, free housing, free clothes, free travel, etc for doing less than the head coach does.

Like him less and less. He is our coach, and I will be rooting for him to win.

God forbid an employee leverage for more money. Geez, that is terrible- just like every other person in this country.

LOL! If I wasn't already sick, I'd probably be sick. He doesn't deserve a raise or a contract extension. Win next year and he can have one...lose and get as far away from Knoxville as possible.

Did you ever work part-time and get a raise despite not doing work that others would deem extraordinary? I have gotten the maximum raise percentage along with the minimum. The absolute expectations for this program, at this point, would be exactly what he's done. He's exceeded preseason predictions both years, yet to have any problems with his players, and has improved. Along with that, it appears he'll improve even more next year. He deserves a raise, but a minimal one. He's not done a bad enough job to not get something.

I have a hard time seeing someone getting a raise for two NIT early bounces in a row and don't feel like he should be rewarded at all for this. In fact, it's ridiculous that he got 25 K for making a NIT tournament. I do agree that he exceeded expectations in the first year but I fail to see any progress in year two. We traded a couple of early bad losses for decent road wins last year to this year and ended up with the exact same results. Not arguing at all and I wouldn't be shocked if he got something but I don't think he should get anything and should be fired if he doesn't make the tournament next year.

You just said the improvement: no really bad losses. If UGA is the only "bad loss" based on the RPI, then there is improvement. Plus, he won more games, and went 5-1 against our biggest rivals (UK, UF and Vandy). You wouldn't be rewarding him for making the NIT. You'd be rewarding him for the whole body of work. This foundation he's laying is becoming more and more solid.

And then you add in the number of coaches in the SEC making more money than him, and its a no-brainer. Too many Vols fans are using his lack of post-season success here as their reason for no extension. But the results they want are a lot harder to accomplish without the extension and support from the AD. JMO

Rewarding mediocrity is what got UT in dire financial position. It has to stop sometime or Dave Hart is no better than Hamilton.

Got to love Vol fans comparing a job cooking fries to one leading a major college basketball program.

See 2014 mock draft MemphisCanes linked the other, was very surprised...has McRae going late first round and Jarnell very early second round.

With CJ in the league, Tobias now making a name for himself and supposedly Hopson about to get a chance Tennessee may start actually getting some NBA exposure that we've long been missing.

That could help him.
Hope he gets his top 2014 class.
Trying not to be hyper critical of the guy. Just think he's going to be a very average coach.

Regardless of everyone's opinion this time next year we will have a pretty good idea of what kind of coach he can be.

He's still young in terms of head coaching and obviously is still learning...let's see if he adapts to new things and learns from his mistakes or does the same thing.

One thing I like is he said in previous years we don't need a true PG to run the system and he didn't show an urgency to add one the last 2 classes...this year he put on a full court press for Thompson and doesn't seem satisfied there as he seems to be looking at mathieu.

It's called an analogy. The concept remains the same. The man has done nothing thus far that warrants being treated like we don't give a damn about him. As others have said, based on market value, we'ere ripping him off, and if the AD wants to keep him around longer, they need to do something about it.
