Megan Rapinoe & The US Soccer Team

Because of PR and the women's revenue has grown a ton the last decade.

The women are basically guaranteed to have a good showing in the WC. The men have the potential to bring in tons more $ if they do well, but sometimes they don't even make the WC. They do well once every 12 years. The women are steady in a business that is showing to be more and more fruitful.
Which US Women’s Soccer sponsors are you going to ask to increase their pay?

I do think ultimately they will get more money for the sake of PR, but I’m not convinced it’s justified. I don’t see anyone watching them more, or the men less if they aren’t paid more equitably.

It's true but people still don't care about women's soccer as they the mens'

The men get paid more because they bring in more money, not because they’re more successful on the field. The women should hope the mens team doesn’t get it together, because IF they ever win a WC, that pay gap may get bigger.
You could make a strong argument that the success of the USWNT is a testament to the opportunity they receive as Americans as compared to women in other countries.

When they're on the field they bring in more revenue. The women showed more revenue for the 4 years leading up to the dispute. Obviously, this is a short time frame that favored the women, but the financials don't exactly line up the way you think they do.

The women have a position of strength because they're bringing in a lot more revenue than they did when they made the deal. Things are changing, and that's part of why the incredibly stingy USS acquiesced.

I don't understand the question.
It wasn’t a very good question.

Where is the money coming from to increase the Women’s pay?

Is it already there and simply needs to be re-allocated? Or is it new funding that will be need to be raised thru sponsors and advertising?

They saw a huge revenue increase and that's a big part of why they felt emboldened. 2013 was their peak and then they crushed that peak for 3 straight years, leading into the labor dispute. I think this is gate revenue

PolitiFact - Does the U.S. women’s soccer team bring in more revenue but get paid less than the men?

So the money is there already?

I would expect the Women to out-gate and out-merch the Men.

Are you confirming what I said?

Yes to a point. Per that link and others I have read the women have brought in more revenue from game attendance over the last 3-4 years than the men. Not much but still they have out produced in that 1 area. Where it gets murky per my link is sponsorship dollars, US soccer doesn't specify sponsorship dollars so we don't know who xyz company is sponsoring.

It was probably already there.

USS ruined the men's hypiest moment in their WC history (1998) because they didn't play ball with pretty reasonable pay increase requests by the players. It's a fun pod series if you want to check it out.

Point is, they will nickel and dime if they can.

The women can win it and generate less revenue than the men finishing last. Nobody cares about either of them.

But what about when the women win it and get $4m in prize $ + other sponsorship $ and the men don't qualify?

Lots of people care. Over a billion mother****ing people on the planet watched Megan Rapinoe in the women's WC final.

Then the men aren't getting the Fifa money are they? Isn't that really their main gripe? Fifa pays out hundreds of millions for men's WC teams and like 60 million for women's WC?

I'm guessing this most recent agreement was possible because the USMNT agreed to share their WC revenue with the women's team.

Sounds like their argument ought to be with FIFA.

Women's soccer and men's soccer only have one similarity and that's the basic fundamental game. They're totally different products and are priced as such. This complaint they have is like saying they ought to be commanding Macbook prices while they have the power and use of a Chromebook simply because they're both "laptops".

True, but FIFA would tell them to pound sand, form their own league and keep all the revenue they generate.

I dont have a problem with it really. They should add up the totality of earnings, including gate, tv, endorsements, etc and then pay based on that. If the women are bringing in more, they should get paid more, if not, not. Pretty simple really. Seem like a bunch of queer activists these days but as far as getting paid, again, I dont see the problem.

Perhaps they should. Women's sports leagues around the world have thrived without the benevolence (read: outright sponsorship) of their men's counterparts.

That’s why we have a successful professional league in the US.

What does that have to do with USWNT? You know it's not the same thing, right? You're moving the goalposts because you can't argue with 1 billion viewers.

I don’t care about what other countries care about. I know in the United States people would rather watch 6 year olds play soccer than the supposed professional adults.
