Memphis People, Chris Jones - What is this?

Anyone that has played, worked, or covered (as in a journalist, etc.) a Major D1 like UT knows that what Hat is saying, is very likely. Recruiting in D1, especially in Football and Basketball, is a dirty game.

I have played, worked, and followed D1 athletics. While negative recruiting is everywhere and recruiting is a sleazy business, his conspiracy theory is absurd. He knows that but is now stuck with his theory and has to now run with it.

Hat, there is nothing wrong with stepping up and admitting you were just trying to stir the pot and were expecting more to accept your theory. Unfortunately this one was just a little too over-the-top for even your biggest followers to buy into. It's no biggie, we all miss the mark on occasion.

I don't doubt that Calipari is doing all he can to derail Pearl's recruiting. He is the Kentucky coach and the two aren't known to exchange Christmas cards. I also know negative recruiting is part of the game.

The part I find absurd is the idea that other coaches are so vehement in their hatred of Pearl that they will partake in sabotaging UT's recruiting in their free time. I think hat wants people to believe this because they will see Pearl as a liability to UT. In reality, while I can believe that Pearl may not have a lot of friends in the coaching ranks (although I'm sure he's got more than hat is willing to admit), I don't believe coaches care enough to mess with his recruiting at all costs, as he suggests.

Well, in the case of Calhoun, Selby was still in play for a while. If he doesn't like Pearl, it makes sense for him to go major neg in order to help out his own chances. Calipari is in conference so you are right and it makes a ton of sense.

The negative recruiting, yes. The exaggerations, no. I don't buy that there is some kind of extensive effort to hinder Pearl because "everybody hates him". The extent of the negative recruiting is to benefit a coach and their particular problem, not to push Pearl out of the upper levels of college basketballl. I don't believe for a second that Calhoun worked together with Calipari to undercut Pearl's recruitment of Selby unless Calhoun felt it would help UConn's recruitment of Selby. If there is some kind of concerted effort, the coaches are doing a pretty piss poor job.

I also think the idea of Pearl being a "serial adulterer", something hat has obsessively promoted, and it affecting recruitment involving single mothers is ridiculous. He mentions that this reason shouldn't make us surprised when recruits like Williams and Selby leave us at the altar, as if the idea were presented to the family at the last minute.

In any event, the recruitment for these high level players is always cutthroat. We'll win a few, lose most, but if we get only one or two high profile guys every year or so, then we're doing really well.

When I'm wrong, I'll admit it. Just because you can't believe his peers detest your pal Forbes' boss doesn't make it any less true. If you don't think Kentucky and UCONN, along with another Big East school, combined to do a number on Selby's mom, keep dreaming. You're exactly the guy whose expense those guys are having a laugh at now. Hell, if I get my schedule cleared and head to Churchill next Saturday, I'll be laughing with them. I hope Pearl and his staff are more aware than you. If not, they aren't going to see the next shot coming.

Stop name dropping. You don't think that I don't know that college athletics is a $hitty business to be in? It is.

But there was/is no collusion, for lack of a better word between Calhoun and Cal to bring down Pearl. They both probably tried to negative recruit Tennessee with JS but there is no doubt they negative recruited each other as well and I'm not naive enough to believe that Tennessee didn't do it either.

It is what it is, you win some you lose some and you move on to the next player.

You act like this is some sort of unprecedented action. Paul Evans got run the Hell out of the profession because his peers in the Big East decided to team up on him. Quin Snyder is coaching the Austin Toros because his competitors made sure every misstep, no matter how minor, he made at Missouri got fed to the media. If coaches hate you, they hate you. I've sat in on more than a few in home visits over the years. It's not hard to tell who their peers disdain. When three different coaches run the exact same negative pitch on the same coach, it's not coincidence.

Kelvin Sampson agrees with this post.

Are you counting yourself as the person with the negative Pearl recruiting during home visits? "Maeshon: don't let your son go to Tennessee, BP tans too much and is orange."

We can just agree to disagree with your conspiracy theory but if your theory is true that would have to make you extremely impressed with his 2010 class currently ranked #4 in the country by Rivals with all of the coaches hating him and all and telling anyone who will listen what a bad person he is.

Well, I guess you are right considering these examples are exactly what's happening to Pearl. They sure are doing a number on Pearl in recruiting. It's not like he pulled in a top 5 class or anything.

Yeah, like I said, if they are in play for the same kid, I have no doubt they are pulling out all the stops to get Selby or anybody else. What I'm not buying is the collusion with Cal or a coalition of coaches working to do most anything outside of their own interests. I doubt that other coaches, outside a few old guard members, care at all about the Deon Thomas deal. It's 20+ years ago, for god's sake.

If they really want to see a coach fail, it wouldn't surprise me. If I became UT's football coach, I'd push players towards Alabama before I let Kiffin have them.

I wasn't alive at the time, and I still have a hard time believing how low that was. Personally, I don't hate Pearl, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if other coaches still hated him for it.

Yeah, insults from the semiliterate

ahem

"semi illiterate" :p

are really damaging to my psyche. When an ass shaking emoticon is the most intelligent part of one's post, it reveals a great deal about the poster.

Oh, but how many times did you look? :shades:

Says much about your schnookielessness. :mega_shok:

And your preferences. :shakehead:

This thread has some hilarious delusions of grandeur. I hope the basketball panjandrum who thinks UNLV is the 5th best job in its conference continues brilliant advising towards kevin o'neill and bo ryan. Pearl will continue coaching a better and more interesting basketball product more attractive to the best players.

Other coaches cannot ruin pearl, especially not old coaches who are dying and who sucked as coaches this year...calhoun had plenty of talent this season and did nothing with it.

Calipari and coach k and lots of others will be negative recruiting pearl because of his success.

Excellent post! :good!:

Obviously the entire VNation has overlooked the undeniable fact the quality recruits will not be drawn to the stench of (impending) death! :ermm:

Oh! :stop:

Then there is the counterfact that dead and dying coaches bring great attention to their programs. Think Jimmie V! :furious3:

Hmmm.

What we need is a terminally ill coach that eternally refuses to die!

Just talked to Bruce and he said that because of the obvious challenges he will face from recruiting the basketball playing sons of single mothers, he will now focus on players that are either being raised by single fathers, players adopted by two gay fathers and/or eunuchs, kids from the orphanage and aliens with no belly buttons posing as humans. This should eradicate any preconceived bias against him by single mothers that obviously will look at his own children and see what a terrible parent he himself has been...

P.S. He'll also recruit the sons of potential second trophy wives...

Thank you I enjoyed this.

You know that a person is completely unmasked when even in this job market, their passel of desperate student/job seekers fails to show up to support their hero.

By the way, Pinkston was so ignored by Pearl and staff that he wanted to commit to UT a few days before Harris did and was told to hold off by Pearl (who knew they wouldn't want to play together), which was the real reason he was pissed. We had our pick of the two guys and went with Harris. It had nothing to do with having to spend all our energy on Harris in order to overcome the anti-Pearl recruiting of other coaches.

Hat is so full of crap. I don't know how much clearer his agenda has to be with his blantant misrepresentations, if not outright lies. Let's just gander at what is being said here:

- Pearl is the most hated coach in basketball.
- Coaches are tired of "all the whining" Pearl and Jones do, yet there's nothing that suggests this happens other than hat's exaggerations.
- Coaches will do anything to sabotage his recruiting at the expense of their own time and efforts in recruiting.
- Pearl will have to work harder than any basketball coach at keeping recruits because of the above statement, causing Tennessee to lose out on players we normally could get.
- Coaches will work with people like Calipari, whom they respect (or fear, I guess) enough to sabotage Pearl even though Cal is kicking their ass in recruiting using WWW and LeBron (Apparently, this is kosher with the coaches, but whining is unforgivable and the cause for all to gang up on Pearl/Jones. Riiiight.).

Clearly, again, the agenda here is to make Pearl out to be a liability to Tennessee in order to garner fan opposition to Pearl. Unfortunately for hat, even though he's gained some followers who use his "Pearlophile" terminology and buy his argument, the continuing success on the court and in recruiting have made him more desperate and illogical in his attacks on Pearl as opposed to his (usually) lucid arguments on other subjects.

The most beautiful thing in this thread is reading someone go on about hating self promotion and whiners who is a self promoting whiner whose jealousy has made him a laughing stock.

We could have Penny as our coach and we would have trouble getting players out of Memphis. For people on here to pretend that it has something to do with Pearl or we struggle with Memphis players because other coaches do not like him shows that they are idiots who know nothing about college basketball or are disingenuous tools with an anti Pearl agenda.

Easterwood, MM and 96, peas in a pod I would not piss on to put out the fire.

I'm failing to see how dropping "Tennessee has produced more felons than NBAers under Bruce Pearl" or "you should get a load of the broad Pearl ditched his wife for" into a conversation with a recruit's family requires much effort. It's not like they have spend their entire hour talking about Pearl to get their point across.

No, I agree with you. Pearl has certainly done some things in his career that make him an easy target.

My point was more general though about how negative recruiting happens all the time because some on here act like it does not.

Just a fan that tries to stay as informed as possible. I came through high school when the prep scene was at one of it's peaks (like it is now), in the mid 90's. My senior year was one of the better classes with Kenny Dye (classmate at Bolton), Rick Houston, Robert O'Kelley, Tony Harris, Snap Hunter, Marcus Moody, Cory Bradford, etc.

The Bolton-Bartlett games were unbelievable during my time there and both made it to the state tourney in '97.

Yeah, I graduated in '98 so I definitely remember a lot of those guys. Luckily, I work in the athletic business these days and get to see a lot of these new kids come through the ranks.
