Journalism is the reporting of the news. IT'S VERY DEFINITION DOES NOT CHANGE. Carlson's newspiece was not reporting the news. She made opinions after a few observations and then made up information about the coaches. That is not the news, regardless of whether I want it to be or not. This was not an editorial piece, which could almost be allowed. She wrote her information as fact and she couldn't have been further from the truth.
you stated a page before that it was shifting toward sensationalism...are you changing that view?

The media doesn't scare the real men in coaching. Look at how the Bob Knights, Brian Billicks, and Bob Huggins of the world deal with the cretons. They put the jackals on their heels and keep them there.

you're in the beer thread a lot, so I can only imagine you've been drinking some already. Again, one more time, hopefully you'll understand it. Sensationalism has no room in journalism. Report the facts, from both sides, and report what can happen. What, When, Where, Why and How. Don't let your ideas and opinions get in the way. That is not the job of a reporter. It's wrong for her to do it, and it's wrong for anyone else to do it.

Journalism does not equal sensationalism. Newspapers are willing to put more sensationalistic CRAP in their papers now to SELL more papers. Jenni Carlson is garbage and so is the editor that let her and her faulty facts get out.

From Pat Forde's latest on espn.com

On Monday, a completely unapologetic Gundy said it was "unfortunate" that his 3-minute, 20-second tirade took away from his team's victory. Of course, that was his fault, since he deemed trashing a reporter more important than acknowledging the Cowboys' performance.
Coaches have the right to take issue with journalists, and to do it in public. That's part of the job for a columnist to take what he/she dishes out. But this was such a shrill overreaction that the message was lost amid the screaming.
One of Gundy's big complaints was negative treatment of a "kid" who is not being paid to play the game. But coaches never object to the tens of thousands of fans fawning over that kid, the tutors arranged to help him maintain minimum eligibility standards, the training table meals he eats, the tricked-up locker room he changes in -- or the positive press most players receive most of the time. Hero worship is expected and encouraged; criticism is child abuse. It's quite the double standard.(For the record, Reid is 21 years old. He was old enough to vote in the 2004 presidential election or to die in Iraq. But few people are afforded the means to grow up more slowly than major-college athletes.)
"Come after me!" Gundy bellowed directly at Carlson. "I'm a man! I'm 40!" OK, if you insist. The Dash will go after Gundy. The great orator said that the column in question was shown to him, "by a mother. A mother of children." As opposed to a mother of walruses, presumably. Gundy went on to say that 75 percent of the column was fabricated. He took issue with two points in the column. So maybe math isn't his specialty. Anyway, The Dash hopes Gundy felt like a big man when it was over. Next time an ounce of professional decorum would be appreciated. Until then, try to worry more about improving that 13-15 career record that includes seven victories over Sun Belt and I-AA opposition.

It looks like i'm not the only one eh?

Hey, you had a good opener :) I like beer, but it's coffee at the moment.
Here is the problem with your idealistic view of what journalism is. It doesn't fit reality. We all know that every paper editorializes their stuff. They do this by choosing what goes in the paper, what does not, and how stuff is written. That's just the reality of the thing.

Fine, she may be garbage but of your own admission, that's the world in which we live. It's hard to blame the girl in the industry that you are defending/or at least telling me what it should be, for doing what is now desired of her.
You may be doing well in classes, but she's actually doing the job. That is in no way a negative comment towards you, just the facts.

you seriously don't have a clue. There's a reason Jenni Carlson is in Stillwater Oklahoma writing for some 30,000 publication newspaper. Because she obviously isn't good. That is not what the reporters do. They tell the facts. You are the one that can't face reality. Talk show hosts, anaylysts, and editorialists are one thing. But she's a reporter. You are missing that HUGE difference.

No, I'm not. You're an idealist. She obviously is good because she is their featured sports writer. Reporters tell facts in a way that will fit with the agenda of who they are writing for. See the following examples. New York Times, Wall street Journal, etc.

hahahahahaha.. I can even go further. Turns out, Carlson writes for The Oklahoman, which has even been bashed by their peers as the worst newspaper in the country and is constantly accused of faulty and biased writing trying to fit a certain agenda. Wow, case just closed.

Wait a second, so my points about her writing to fit her employer, journalism is in fact really editorialized, and that she was doing her job were all true. Yep.

nice try crazyguy. but she was correct for her one newspaper. That's why she's there. She's not going anywhere. hahahahahaha, this is great. Proves me right on everything. The Oklahoman is one of the most laughed at newspapers in the country. It makes the Atlanta Urinal and Constipation look like gold.

It's not like he hit her. She wrote an article mocking the QB for basically being a "mommas boy" and he told her to basically eff off and that she has no idea what she is talking about. Kudos to Mike Gundy.

Yelling at a woman is totally uncalled for. If she was my family I would punch him in the throat.

who is she supposed to be correct for other than where she works for? She is writing to her environment which is what I said 10 posts ago...You haven't proved anything of substance that I've seen so far other than make random statements...

You had better watch that language around here....Gundy is a great man for defending his players according to some people around here.

oh no it totally makes sense now. You just don't understand the world of journalism. Her paper is the laughing stock of newspapers because this is what they do. And that explains why a number of actual news outlets are siding with Gundy on the issue. you are exactly right. She wrote for her environment. However, if she expects to go anywhere from OK City, she better start writing facts.

um, I think that many think that you have this all twisted and it's a few other people that need to grow up.

you're the one that wanted this sent to the grundy thread in the sports forum. You'd get eaten alive over there with your ideas.

If I was being VERY generous, then I would say public opinion is mixed. The oklahoman may get it's share of reviews that are bad, but i've found in the short time researching them that it is mixed. You're trying to defend Gundy from the muddy lower ground....good luck.
